KCBS Teases Half Moon Bay Shooting Six Different Times With No News But Sports/Ads OK--Update: Reporter Says "It was a Beautiful Drive Down The Coast"

A shooting in Half Moon Bay--multiple fatalities, per KRON

The alleged all-news radio station, KCBS also reported the same news, SIX times, more like lame teases.

The first tease came shortly before 4 PM on the afternoon news with Brett Burkhart and Patti Reising. Six different times since the initial announcement, Burkhart and Reising essentially said the same thing:

"We have reports of a shooting in Half Moon Bay --there are four people dead--Our Megan Goldsby is on her way to the scene."

At 4: 42 PM, Goldsby was still "On her way to the scene."

Note KCBS teased the shootings all the while allowing sports updates to air and yes, all commercials to air too.

And as of 4: 48 PM, Megan Goldsby is still "on her way."

UPDATE: 5: 21 PM

Reporter Megan Goldsby first report from the scene: "It was a beautirl day driving down the coast..."

  1. Sounds like KCBS is competing with ktvu for the worst coverage award.
During their 4pm news, ktvu was 20-30 minutes behind what NBC Bay Area and ABC7’s reporting. Ktvu was still reporting 4 people shot at two locations but on their graphic only showed one marker (which wasn’t even in the right place).
On the other hand, NBC and ABC7 were reporting 4 killed and 3 injured, and also the addresses and names of both shooting locations.

    1. Hey Einstein, have you ever heard of fact checking? Did it not occur to you that perhaps ktvu wasn’t the first to report the fatality count and exact locations because they were actually VERYIFYING information before going on air with it? It’s called responsible journalism.

    2. Right. I’m sure those were ktvu’s big concerns, fact checking and responsible journalism.

  2. ABC 7 has the best live coverage. 4 reporters; 3 on scene and 1 at Stanford Hospital with live shots at 5pm. NBC, KTVU and KPIX each only had a single reporter there. All stations seem to be using same chopper footage.

    1. They pretty much pool (lease) chopper coverage these days as newsroom budgets have been cut , even in large markets.

  3. 2 crime scenes KPIX and KABC have only been at one??? Lots of talk but no information!!

    1. KGO has a reporter at both scenes, plus the Sheriff substation and Stanford hospital. However, I agree that there hasn't been much new information. That's how these things work thought. They'll stick with it as "breaking news" through the evening block. Lots of other big news - like OPD chief, LA Shooting, etc. aren't going to get their coverage though!

  4. 7 dead. I hope family of victims are being supported.

  6. At Least 7 Killed In Half Moon Bay Shootings; Suspect In Custody
The suspect has been identified as Zhao Chunli, 67 of Half Moon Bay, according to NBC Bay Area.

  7. Hello,
Today's mass shooting "event" is indeed tragic— but, the suspect is arrested, the victims aren't coming back.
Not going to David Muir is just silly— they will be right back at 6pm with more of the same, blah, blah... 5 minute loop, isn't that what a crawl is for

And, what in the heck does "building a better bay area" actually mean? How's the progress on this?

    2. Regretfully, David Muir's 6 PM Newscast contained NO MENTION whatsoever of the Half Moon Bay tragedy some 3 hours prior to the broadcast. Keep it local!

  8. KCBS, now and in the olden days covered the news in 30 minute cycles. It would be irresponsible for them to report information that isn't confirmed. They sent a reporter to cover it( Megan). Have you ever tried to drive midday from SF to Half Moon Bay. HInt: it takes time. UNtil then, all you have is official information provided by the sheriff's office. Getting the story right is more valuable than making it up.

    1. It's especially slow these days as Highway 92 is only partially open. So there's even more traffic, and this longer drive times, on Highway 1 through Pacifica to HMB.

  9. News teams hanging out on scene need to get their body clips.

  10. Too bad media is allowed to talk incessantly when they dont have all information. Hope they will correct themselves. NBC is yakking about name of business is no longer the same name.Business I icense is most umportant? Did locations grow pot?? Not confirmed but all stations said pot grew there??

  12. As someone who lived in Foster City and San Carlos for years and who had friends in Half Moon Bay, I drove out there often, sometimes once a week. I assume Megan started from Oakland if she made it from Oakland to Half Moon Bay in just a little less than one and a half hours, that sounds right for that time of the day. It often took me 45 minutes from Foster City to downtown HMB if there was traffic, which there often are that time of the day. Where in HMB was the shooting, if you have to go on highway 1 you are likely to run into more traffic, even without traffic depending where the shooting took place, it can easily add another 15 minutes to your trip.

  13. It was a spectacularly gorgeous day up and down the California coast. That's just a fact. The irony is that something so dreadful occurs on such a beautiful day. It's called "constrasting".

  14. Another sad tragedy in our backyard. I realize reporting is their job, but if I had to report on a mass murder, I would not be eager to “race right over”.
The roads to HMB are strained right now, even if you were in a big hurry, it would take quite awhile.
My condolences to everyone affected to this sad tragedy

  15. Bay Area native Terry McSweeney did an outstanding job of reporting the events at crime scene #1 in the Half Moon Bay shootings and did his best to report what was evident in spite of the insipid Janelle Wang. Just like his on site reporting of the Gilroy Garlic shooting, McSweeney's reporting was level headed and not given over to hyperbole .
The newer class of journalism does not appear to have anything remotely close to the who, what, where, when and why school of breaking news reporting. That might be a direct result of the current Shiney Object trend that permeates all real stories of Breaking News.

  16. Raj spoke directly to the County Supervisor live on air who told Raj that cannabis is legal to farm in the County if the grower has the necessary permits. But Raj keeps saying that there may be an “illegal” pot grow at one of the scenes. Raj needs to pay attention and listen.

    1. I missed the Indian Walter Knonkite’s “coverage” of this event. Sounds like I didn’t miss much.

    2. Your comment is fine, except the word "Indian", what does that have to do with anything. Either you like a reporter or not, Indian, Asian etc. should have nothing to do with it.

    3. 12:50 PM: blah, blah, blah. stop with the woke background noise. if you took the time to actually read this blog instead of faux virtue signaling, you'd already know that 'Indian Walter Kronkite' is a term his NBC Bay Area colleagues use and that we only know about because of Rich's outstanding reporting.

    4. There is a difference between woke and racists. Typical right wing response. Woke to them now is a word used when they disagree with something. That's a good way to come off as not racists.

  17. KCBS reporter arrived tardy at Tuesday morning's 9 AM Press Conference and made a scene fumbling with the KCBS microphone setting it up at the lectern after the briefing had started.
