Bay Area Media Coverage on Tyre Nichols Beating Video --KRON Opportunity Wasted

Bay Area media covered the Tyre Nichols video(s) release about as well as expected. It wasn't great but above average and OK.

KRON whiffed on a major chance to get some genuine background and geography on the sordid, sad affair--its newcomer, Erin Wilson, a Memphis, Tenn native and who knows the area and culture real well, could have provided a genuine account of the community and police relationship but it never materialized. Wilson is a sports anchor but givmn her reporter pedigree and knowledge of the area, I'm fairly certain she could have talked about the relationship between the Black community and cops but it didn't happen. Oh well.

*As difficult itv was to watch any of the video(s), and it was, you had to watch. Itv was compelling, disturbing, violent and horrid. As the night wore on, I had to turn off CNN and MSNBC because they were showing it endless times. Too much to bear.

KPIX pretty much stuck to CBS network coverage --a wise decision. As did KGO with ABC News. The local angle never really materialized because the few local protesters in SF and Oakland were generally peaceful and not even a scant occurrence of violence took place. Good news on that front.

    1. Yup, race determines coverage and sympathy. One reason I no longer consume much TV news. Or mainstream news of any sort for that matter. It's all about show.

  2. The KTVU phone interview of David DePape , The accused Paul Pelosi attacker is the top local news story. That was some good 1970's style SLA /Synanon stuff....
All KTVU had to do was accept the collect call from him.
Talk about getting a huge story dropped right onto their lap.
Funny that other media outlets seriously questioned the authenticity of the jail house phone call. May there was Sum-Ting-Wong still???
And KNTV got that exclusive interview with the Half Moon Bay shooting suspect after Janell Wang cruised into the jail for a regular visit. The dude only speaks Mandarin...and so does Wang.
    "Everybody Wang-Chung tonight"

    1. A newsroom is messed up when they accept a collect call from "Baba Booey"

    2. I didnt know there were still "Collect Calls" at all. I recall being on long distance calls and the Operator rudely barging into the conversation to demand I put more quarters in the phone booth.

    1. Very true, that is why I eschew TV news and TV in general.
Instead I choose to listen to the calming wisdom of local AM radio, specifically KSFO's 10 (TEN) full hours (Sat + Sun) of Three Dimensional Wealth Radio with Doug Andrew.

  4. Disagree, this didnt need to be seen. If a cop murders someone even though they are being recorded, watching it is violence porn! Only DA and victim's family need to see it. Same with Pelosi attack. Its not a video gamr. These are real people. Watch MMA or football to see consensual violence!!

    1. You must not work in the tv news business

    2. If you don't want to see it, don't watch it. To do otherwise would be masochism.

    3. 3:27.'only DA and victim's family need to see it"???? Five cops have been charged with murder. They had the right and their lawyers have the right to see it. Since the public will be paying for the trial and the megamillion dollar wrongful death settlement that Ben Crump will secure for the next of kin( apparently Mr. Nichols left behind a child in Sacramento), they too have the right to see it. Much of it from the bodycams is dark and unwatchable. The best, clearest image came from a pole cam at the scene where Mr Nichols was apprehended after running from the cops..There has been an autopsy paid for by Mr. Crump and he says "preliminary results " of that autopsy find injuries consistent with beating. He refuses to release the entire private autopsy he paid for, or disclose what it found to be the cause of death. The official autopsy by the medical examiner has not yet been released and no cause of death has been issued. Mr. Crump will get one third of the wrongful death settlement. A sportscaster from Memphis is not a reporter and would be utterly inappropriate to be used to comment on this matter on a news program

    4. It's called transparency. The clip was difficult to watch, but by making it public, it helps assure more will be done to prevent that kind of behavior in the future.

  5. Good old CNN trying to claim that the 5 black officers who work for a black police chief are racist. They suck.

    1. Watch cnn? In the old days, yes; nowadays it's one sided bias opinion and so much untruths no wonder it's slip sliding away and losing audience by the thousands

    2. 5:41 the same can be said about Fox and ITS one-sidedness. Numbers are down there, too....and figure to go down once the GOP primary race heats up, and Fox makes the inevitable decision to bail on Trump and latch on to De Santis--pissing off a majority of its Trump-supporting demographic.

    3. @ 7:47: Triggered and woke, are you? MSM hasn't been honest since after 2000 AD; nowadays you have to see and take and use your own judgement as to what's the truth is; see what NBC did to the reporter who reported the Pelosi attack as accurate but was suspended regardless? Gone are the honest reporting bu Cronkite, Wallace, Huntley–Brinkley etc, see the latest batch of reporters and anchors whom were discredited for "fibbing"? Good Lord...

    4. This is what happens when you have flunkies and buffoons like Looooth Pena, Emma Goss, Greg Liggins, Sal Castaneda, Reggie Aqui, Frank Mallicoat, and Amanda Starrantino anchoring and reporting.

  6. IMO what happen to Nichols is worse than what happened to Floyd. I wonder there hasn't been wide spread rioting because all the races are the same?

  7. Disagree. ERIN Wilson, is not needed to provide anything. Just because she is from Memphis doesn't give her credibility or insight into what happened. This has nothing to do with a relationship between police and the community in Memphis.
