Sunday This, That, and the Other, Holiday Style; Dion Lim ABC7 More Prime in '23; KQED Largesse

SUNDAY--Happy Hanukkah

The week that's lost in SF --sure, the stores will be packed and a festive holiday vibe fills the air. Even though there's news that pandemic-related hospital visits are back, people seem not to care and are going about their merry ways.

Ho ho ho.

Yeah, that quake was a mini-jolt and its aftermath reminded us that there's no KGO Radio to kvetch and talk. We're reduced to the leftovers like a paltry KCBS and a few TV News stations that show us richter scales and very little else.

KCBS, yes I harp on and on, is so trivial now. A once-heritage station that is reduced to banal reporters and benign anchors, some of whom have the personality of a week-old cumquat.

Yeah, had I been watching the KTVU broadcast of the 49ers' game the other night (I was at a friend's house--I have one),watching the Amazon Prime telecast. I heard the news about the audio being out for a majority of the 4th Q, but hey, are you shocked? It's KTVU.

Dion Lim will become a vital part of KGO's (ABC7) newscasts in '23--if that means a revamped 5PM with her and Dan Ashley, don't be shocked, KGO isn't. With ABC breathing down her back to come to the network, Circle7 better make it happen cause if not, Countess Lim is headed for LA/NY. Start spreadin' the news.

OK, so now I'm supposed to believe that Brian Hackney is feeling trapped on the weekend at KPIX and for once, I believe it. In fact, Hackney should be in Ryan Yamamoto's spot and vice-versa. But PIX can't admit they made a mistake in PC-centric SF.

Did KRON settle with Nexstar? Any day now.

KQED grossed over $75M bucks in '23 --you'd think with that kind of cash they'd produce a few local shows-- (Check Please is lone wolf) but KQED, which pays its senior managers a MILL or so, has bonuses and coffee mugs to hand out and that's costly these days, I guess.

NOTE TO READERS: I will, if all goes well, blog this week, holidays and all, a normal week for me, but if you like 415 Media, make a donation and spread the Hanukkah/Holiday cheer my way, thanks.

    Nailed it.

KQED is so pathetic I have no guilt over the fact that I no longer give.

  2. Maybe the folks at KQED aren't asking the viewers what sort of programs they'd like to watch. No complaint about the pledge break programming, they need an income source. But it seems hard to believe the majority of KQED viewers want to watch one cooking & food show after another all week long. Hey, here's an idea: How about some educational programming? Learning another language, useful math & probability skills and the like.

    1. KCSM used to offer educational programming, being owned by a community college and all. KQED could add a subchannel or two, the way KTEH did, when there was a KTEH and it was on Monument Peak.

  3. Agree, PIX with the hackney PC hire. Very lame

  4. What exactly do you want local broadcasters to do when there is a 3.5 earthquake in an earthquake rich area?

  5. I agree Rich. Hackney should be on the weekday chair replacing Yamamoto or even better anchor in Donchey’s place and put Sara back on the field.

Then if that happens who will do the weather at 11PM if Peck has to leave early just to fill in on a Monday morning for Burch? Mary perhaps? I think Heggen did this before.

First thing, get 1 more meteorologist on KPIX, I think enough CBS stations have at least 4 meteorologists and same with many others. For the last 2 Holidays, Hackney wound up working 7+ days a week just because Heggen was out and Peck had to fill in for Mary. Otherwise, Peck would have filled in for Heggen the whole week. Lets see what happens over this year during the holidays. Hackney should just be a fill in anchor for Goodrich or Donchey or Yamamoto and leave Peck to the weather for Heggen, if Burch works the weekday mornings.

KPIX can’t staff properly and makes more cuts (Turner left, we lost Mary Lee though she is doing field reporting & can come back as a fill-in for weather, and a myriad of other cuts).

On a good note, I enjoyed Hackney’s science about fusion, it was very fascinating and nicely done to catch the viewers attention.

  6. I think Dion Lim is out the door at KGO. She’ll be a hit in LA. Ama Daetz and Kristen Sze aren’t going anywhere. Which is Dion Lim’s misfortune and reason to move on to the LA market.

  7. I drove in to Las Vegas Sunday afternoon and picked up BOTH the Raiders and Charger games on the radio. BOTH play-by-play announcers are head and shoulders above Papa

  8. The best change is moving Kristen Sze back to the morning timeslot getting her out of Dion's way! Dion will absolutely kill it at the network in NY or LA while Kristen does her 4-at-4 nonsense.

  9. Dion Lim will do well in Los Angeles, New York, or wherever ABC assigns her to. I agree that ABC7 needs to do everything possible to keep her, perhaps having her anchor the 4 PM and 5 PM newscasts while Ama Daetz anchors the 6 PM and 11 PM newscasts.

In the Boston media market, where I now live after moving from Cupertino in 2019, the CBS O&O, WBZ, has five meteorologists on staff, none of whom also anchor a newscast. KPIX definitely should hire another meteorologist so that Brian Hackney doesn't have to do double duty as an anchor and a meteorologist and Darren Peck doesn't have to work double shifts.

  10. "there's no KGO Radio to kvetch and talk."

Oh, you mean riveting radio such as:
KGO/KCBS: "This is KGO/KCBS. Tell us what you felt."
    CALLER: "Um...my house shook.
    KGO/KCBS: "Where do you live"
    CALLER: Um...West Portal."
KGO/KCBS: "Hey, thanks for calling and sharing!' "Lets go to line 5.""This is KGO/KCBS. Tell us what you felt."
CALLER: "My light fixture swayed a little."
KGO/KCBS: "Wow, really! Where do you live?"
    CALLER: "San Bruno."
KGO/KCBS: "Hey thanks for sharing. Let's go now...to line 3. "This is KGO/KCBS. Tell us what you felt."

    Emmy-award-winning stuff.

  11. Don't forget "Check Please" isn't a KQED original idea or concept. It was "borrowed" from Check Please in Chicago.

  12. KQED runs pledge breaks regularly and “Check, Please” and “Newsroom” are their only regularly produced programs. With all the money collected from pledge drives and their endowments, they need to produce a daily newscast with a legitimate anchor and field reporters. With all the British programs they acquire and broadcast, they are a BBC affiliate. Please expose their elitism.

  13. I don't know what you have against Yamamoto. He is excellent.
Does Liz Cook run the entire news? I get the feeling she is very devious.
