Veteran Bay Area newsman, Gil Haar, has passed.
He was 92.Haar spent extended time at KYUU and KCBS.
He had a signature ending to his reports: "That's the news, I'mmmm Gil Haar." And another: "So now you know."
*Joe Staley, the ex-49ers lineman who spent last year on the post-game NBC Sports Bay Area program didn't return this season because he wanted to spend more time with family, I'm told by a broadcast source.
*The BIG accident on the MacArthur Maze early Sunday was more than a mere traffic tie-up. It involved the shutdown of the most traveled traffic artery in the Bay Area. Furthermore, hundreds of cars and trucks were stuck and nobody knew what happened and what/when caused the mess.
The fact that KCBS had a reporter/anchor at the scene (Eric Thomas), and who was stuck in the mess himself, and didn't get a phoner from the scene, then and later, is inexcusable.
Would KNX in LA and/or 1010 WINS in NY have committed such a travesty? Hell no.
KCBS is a joke.
Or as the senior staff there refer to it, "The shit show."
*Speaking of KCBS, ego-itus reporter, Jim Taylor, insists on making his voice heard in actualities --it's just so irritating and useless. And Taylor isn't funny but he seems to think his awful attempt at humor and making sure we hear it, is a total dud.
Just give us the report, Jim.
Jim Taylor doing his Les Nessman impersonation. Keep him around for Thanksgiving. KCBS can do a live turkey drop with the LT. in the helo.
ReplyDeleteI'd figure the LT herself is the turkey. She certainly gobbles and not much else !
DeleteMaybe has the same model phone as Duane Kuiper?
DeleteAlso: KNBR recently interviewed Staley, in which Joe talks about his recent past and future plans.
ReplyDeleteBack in 2017 I spotted Staley at an airport with his wife and two infants. I can understand why he would want to stay home. Joe would be better than having Carlos or Rod on the postgame show.
DeleteI remember Gil Haar on KNBR, decades ago. Glad he had a good long life !
ReplyDeleteThanks Rich for the heads up on Staley! I thought it was money reasons, but him not doing the Niners TV pre and postgame show due to family reasons is understandable... Hopefully he comes back to media in the future or when the time is right for him and his family.
ReplyDeleteIt still doesnt excuse the unexplained prescence of mr carlos Ramirez whom nobody can seem to say a good word about, yet somebody at NBC thinks hes the greatest thing since sliced bread since hes on both the baseball and the football teams postgame shows, and nobody else in the market has had that honor bestowed upon the them then this obscure fellow
DeleteKCBS has LOTS of stories about vaccines, so that makes up for their failure to cover much hard news.
ReplyDeleteGil Haar was a fabulous news guy. I always enjoyed his newscasts on KYUU. KYUU had great news talent in Gil Haar, Vickie Jenkins, Peter Laufer, etc and the strongest air personalities who really connected with listeners. For bit more on on KYUU: http://www.ohms.com/kyuu.htm
ReplyDeleteWell, KCBS has started airing ad blocks from KNX for SoCal businesses, so maybe they’ll get better by osmosis?
ReplyDeleteRich, what is going on with KPIX’s 11:00 pm News? Andrea Nakano was on for a few days and did a great job. Then It was Anne Makovic and tonight it was Kenny Choi. Is Sarah Donchey being demoted? Or is manageable having “open mic” tryouts?
ReplyDeleteJuliette Goodrich is doing an awesome job!
BTW: Ryan Yamamoto is still awful.
I liked Gil Haar as night news man on KCBS, back when the alternative was Art Bell discussing the chupacabra, and whoever was on KGO. A blessed time, before anyone was a sports leader.
ReplyDeleteThe other afternoon KCBS anchor said we'll be back in 4 minutes....then after 4 minutes of commercials came back and said we'll be back in 1 minute (another commercial) for a sports report. I think KCBS is getting close to being a 24/7 bad commercial. What a JOKE!!!
ReplyDeleteKCBS is a mere shadow of what it used to be. ‘Audacy” ( whatever that means,) used to be called Enteecom and they continue to downsize a once highly respected news operation..After the abomination that Cunulus created a few years hack, when they stripped the once highly regarded KGO radio to the nine, Audacy us following suit by eviscerating KCBS. Sadly, this practice has been happening in radio and TV since the mid 1990s, When deregulation began to suffocate highly respected news operations. The American public has suffered the loss of objective journalism and we see the results with the likes of ‘entertainment’ outlets such as Fox News or Newsmaxx. among others. Back in the early 1990s, these $$ making “organizations” would have been llaughed off the air. So is it any surprise that so many intellectually lazy Americans are so misinformed? Is it a surprise that an autocrat wanna-be is still in the running for the highest office in the land?
