Apparently not.
It's the DOG DAYS of August for everyone but at KCBS it's even more a presence. All hell broke loose last night (Thursday) another on-air gruesome act that had the entire traffic/weather sounders disappear --altogether from 6 until 9 o'clock and at times, the entire CBS News radio jingles gone! It continued on into the night and to make matters worse, it coincided with the WORST anchor in the world, Alisa Clancy taking over.
Talk about CRISIS!
But at KCBS these days, extreme glitches happen so often now it's become part of the daily program and NO ONE is ACCOUNTABLE. Including the news boss who seems more interested in her Macys shoe account than making sure the radio station is running on a full tank of gas. It's a damn MESS and it's not getting any better anytime soon.
*THIS WILL make things interesting: Entercom/Audacy CEO David Field, is in town and presumably heard--or will eventually hear the latest crap that hit Thursday night.
Leave it to you to be apoplectic over missing jingles. Oh, the humanity!
ReplyDeleteKCBS is only useful when there’s local breaking news of import. Even GPS handles traffic concerns better. The entire Bay Area news and news/talk format is basically dead. Example: With all the breaking political news happening today is KGO AM TALK RADIO pre-emoted by a pre-season 49er football game!?! Isn’t sports what stations like KNBR and 95.7 The Game are for?? Seems a day like today would be ratings gold for the likes of Pat Thurston and John Rothman. But no….I guess Lee Hammer knows best. Which circles back to my original point that Bay Area talk radio is dead from programming incompetence.
ReplyDeleteRatings have nothing to do with it. Cumulus has a contract with the 49ers. When there’s a conflict with the Giants, the game airs on KGO. Barring an emergency, they are obligated to air it. Every game, every local pre-show, every post-show brings in more money than regular shows.
DeleteSo the Giants are broadcast on KNBR AM and 104.5 FM and they can’t defer the one of those stations to the 49ers broadcast when there’s a conflict? Make no sense. But then again that’s what happens when corporations like Cumulous, Clear Channel and iHeart own most of the major stations in America. Local news talk stations like KGO get the shaft. Believe me people who tune in for talk radio aren’t really interested in 49er or Cal Bear broadcasts for that matter. But always follow the money and contracts, I guess. That’s all that matters.

Or you can think of it as subsidizing what you hear the rest of the year. KGO is subsidized by other Cumulus stations. No sports franchise wants to be on 104.5, when it doesn’t even reach Pleasanton without a booster. The AMs are both 50k watts.
DeleteI felt the missing sounders was an improvement.
ReplyDeleteKCBS should stand for Kinda like a College station But we Suck! Just sell the station or have it swtich to 24 hour syndicated CBS news & reports out of NY and fire everyone who works at the station. Radio like print is a dying medium!
ReplyDeleteOne jingle I could forever live without is Kars4Kids, perhaps the lousiest charity ever.
ReplyDeleteI agree...
DeleteGiving children cars is a very bad idea. Way too many sideshows and toddler street racing on the I-880 every morning at 2am. Give those cars to the bums and junkies to live in.
Back when CBS O&O stations had their own sounders and stagers for news radio formats.

These were not cheap to produce and KNX and WCBS each had these variations , shame what it's become.
Those sounders were well worth the cost seeing they were in rotation for over 20 years or more. Heck the KNX "Moog" traffic sounder lasted 40 years.
DeleteDog was just informed he is the new Program Director.
ReplyDeleteDavid Field is a JOKE. He inherited his dad's radio group. David Field cannot spell radio, let alone broadcasting, or how to run a radio group. Then he decides to buy CBS. Well, Les Moonves saw this dumb ass coming, and the rest is history. David Field didn't like paying great CBS managers and talent that brought in great revenue and started to fire people at CBS stations across the country. Well, where did that get them? What's left of the broadcast industry is not much. But you can still make money with good talent when it's live and local.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of recycling sounders: I was surprised the first time I heard on the KPIX news, WBBM's instrumental "This is my city, Chicago's my town."
ReplyDeleteKSBS has turned into a real bad 24hr comedy show. What a mess!
ReplyDeleteSorry, KCBS
DeleteSo sad to watch this station circle the toilet bowl. Most of the solid pros have retired or he have been forced out. The few I’ve spoken to recently who still work there can’t wait to get out there. ‘Audacy’ or whatever stupid corporate name they’ve chose to ‘rebrand’ themselves with is almost as much of a joke at Cumulitis! ( Cumulus.)
ReplyDeleteI was listening to Sunday’s post have show on KNBR and it was somewhat comical. Did these guys just watch the same game I did? Look, I understand that Fleming, Kuiper and Krukow work for the Giants, but it was embarrassing to hear them gush. After nearly blowing a game to one of the worst teams in baseball, they were telling listeners that the Giants “ are still in this thing!” Guess what? They’re not. Who in the everyday lineup do they have that scares anyone? They usually don’t score more than 3 runs s game. Their bullpen has gone from best to worst. It’s a mess. Injuries haven’t helped but thr defense is leaky. They leave a ton of runners on base. They are at best, a .500 team. They’ll probably be a ‘spoiler’ in September, but with the prices the Giants charge the fans, folks in the stands deserve better. The Giants broadcast crew is one of the best in the country, but it’s really tiring to hear all of the ‘happy talk’ after every game, win or lose. Guys, how about being more straightforward and explain what is really going on instead of sugarcoating everything. But team Prez Larry Baer is no doubt demanding his guys chat up how encouraging the Giants look, even after blowing big leads or getting swept by better teams. But like most front office execs, Baer wants his broadcast crew to be cheerleaders, not objective announcers.
