Leslie Griffith: Great News Person and Anchor. One of Bay Area's and KTVU's Best. But a Dark Side Too. Reflections

WAS SHE SOLID? Yes and then some. She had a tough, gritty style and she took that edgy part of her personality to the news desk. It was that sinister, dark side that made her presence both compelling and somewhat disturbing at the same time.

Leslie Griffith died Wednesday--much too young at the age of 66. No official cause of death has been announced but KTVU --where she spent over two decades on the anchor desk and reporting in the field, said it was due to an acute form of Lyme disease.

Griffith, yes, was controversial and had considerable dark elements to her personality. At KTVU and away from the station.

There was no doubt she was a talented news anchor and she carried that element into the field as a reporter and later in life, when she left the business to concentrate on teaching and commenting on TV News journalism.

At KTVU, she was held in high esteem and received much admiration and respect.

But, as I WROTE last year, there were complications.

Griffith, as a KTVU Insider who worked with her and knew her well, told me, "as great as she was (and she was), her professional career might have been overshadowed by her own transgressions."

I don't want to concentrate on that part now. It's not the time and Griffith has just passed away but at the same time, ignoring it wouldn't be right either. There's a time and a place.

She was one of the most notable anchors the Bay Area ever had and certainly a gold medalist at KTVU when its news dept. was the envy of the news world and industry recognition was always on the radar.

Leslie Griffith was a key part of that KTVU admiration society.

She will be sorely missed.

  1. She had issues with Dennis and the management team. Someone wrote something about her, she wanted to sue and request KTVU to back her up, but the station decline to, Leslie and KTVU relationship turn bad, she ended up missing like many reporters these days with no info, then she came back and went missing again, don’t know did she quit, terminated or contract is up…Then, Julie took over. She never said good bye to viewers.

Funny thing Julie is missing this week and Leslie is gone when there is a connection.

Back to Leslie, she does indeed have an attitude issue and relationship with man not too good with atleast 2 divorces digging through the info earlier. She indeed got marry or had a child at an very early college age in Texas

    1. Again.... Like you said, a time & a place but she had her demons. She had a child with Mark Ibanez. There was also domestic violence in the KTVU parking lot where she took a high heel & beat the ever living bleep out of him. OPD was called but did nothing. KTVU Management swept it under the rug and ignored it. But it's not cool to speak I'll of the dead.

      Never heard that one. Sources?

  2. A lot of women "got marry" and had a child a an early age. That does not preclude them from pursuing a career and becoming successful. If Ms.Griffith was a man who "got marry" and fathered a child at an early age, it would hardly be worth mentioning. Not only are you illiterate but woefully unenlightened and realy, really STUPID.

  4. So sad to hear of her passing. Lyme disease may have been a contributing factor in her death, as could be some of the underlying causes from Lyme include heart disease and AFIB…

  6. Leslie did not have a sinister dark side. She was a human being and she could be a little crazy (can’t we all), but she has a huge heart.

  8. None of you people have any clue what you’re talking about. I worked with her. She pretended to care but she didn’t. I know that for a fact. She was the kind of person who would throw her co anchor under the bus and not even think about it. She is absolutely the most disgusting person I’ve ever worked with.

    2. Interesting angle though curious how you throw an anchor under the bus? The work is visible to thousands every day so not much to hide re performance.

Wonder what George Watson thought of her…I thought they were pretty close.

  9. Her private life has no bearing on her chops as a news anchor. It should remain private at this point. RIP.

  10. Marky Banez eulogized her. He said quote "That's the sporting life."

  11. Always liked her presentation. She was distinctive and credible. When she was teamed with Dennis Richmond, it was a good match. KTVU had a winning team w her, Richmond and Ibanez. They weren’t the best team ever in Bay Area TV news history, but they were channel’s two ‘all star’ team. Kevin O’Brien knew talent and just as an astute GM for a sports team will do, he knew how to find the best talent. KTVU News was solid, dependable and much respected in those days. Sadly, that is NOT the case anymore.

  12. Was a regular KTVU news viewer, back when Leslie was a reporter there. I enjoyed and appreciated her on-air work, and I thought that she was nice looking too. Was sorry to hear, however, that she had private and professional troubles.

Lyme's can cause brutal long-term maladies. Gone too soon.

  13. Did she have any ongoing contact with current KTVU staff, like Julie Haener, that might help to explain the recent situations?

  14. Wow. This is a gut punch. I used to watch KTVU news back in the day.

    This is very sad news.

  16. I wanted to be a news anchor as a kid. I got as far as a sixth-grade video project, read the "news" as the tape rolled, then saw and heard myself and never wanted to again. I've never gotten over what a dweeb I was. Maybe I was lucky; news anchors might the strangest and most complicated breed of human on the planet

  17. Hate to say it, but being a news anchor it’s not that difficult a job. Just be presentable, reasonably good looking, know how to smile, banter and look at the camera while not mispronouncing a word. News anchors are not geniuses by any means. All they do is fill the time between the commercials and the reports in the field. They get way too much credit and get paid way too much money.

  18. Does anyone out there lnke that Van Amberg used to do a regular talk show on the old KNEW in Oakland and was Bill King’s color man for three years with the Raiders from 1966-68?
