Krueger and Willard Dreck on 95.7 FM "The Game"; Ashley/ABC7 Negotiations on Hold; Maybe Both Sides are OK With It; Friday Coffee

A READER, Matthew, sent me notice of the ex-KNBR sports talker, Larry Krueger, joining 95.7 FM's (The Game), Mark Willard today (Friday)--I had nothing to do so I tuned in and then discovered why I can't listen to sports-radio here (wait a minute, pretty much all radio here for that matter, but that's another story.)

Krueger is an irritating middle-aged BORE. He isn't the slightest-interesting host unless your a statisics nerd with no life and fixated on 7th-round NFL draft picks named Johnny from Texas Tech. Krueger has occasional lucid takes but only that happens when there's a solar eclipse visible in the Bay Area.

It's bad coffee.

And oatmeal crumbs Willard is another retread who thinks talking about his trips to the Marin Trader Joe's is interesting radio. Gees, what a legend.

Which is why the Bay Area has pretty much repudiated BOTH KNBR and The Game because there's no there, there.

I could go on Youtube and talk for twenty minutes about cryonics and be more interesting.

*Nobody's talking--at KGO-TV (ABC7) or Dan Ashley himself--they don't have to, really, but there's also this: Ashley hasn't signed a new deal and ABC doesn't necessarily have to go out of its way to sign The Ash--it's expected he will eventually sign an extension. Emphaize, eventually. But there's still trepidation at 900 Front. The mousies haven't shown any want to get their star anchor an extension and he seems OK with that, or does he?

Ashley took a quiet vacation last week to NY and other parts east-- it wasn't just so he could eat a steak at Peter Luger.

He stopped by WABC and talked to buddies; news anchors, news directors and few ABC News execs. They were not exchanging meatloaf recipes. That much is certain.

Ashley has turned down multiple offers--from the networks in NY to East Coast stations over the years where he can make a lot more dough than he's earning now. Sure, Ashley is not all about money but then again, he's a thirty-year-plus Circle7 veteran. He's the FACE of KGO. You'd think the Disney folks would end all this speculation and take care of their prized pupil, but so far, it's all MUM on both fronts.

Maybe they want it that way. For now.

*KGO's ABC7 ratings LEAD the Bay Area TV News outlets in virtually all time slots --except 10 PM (KTVU) and a few early evening platforms--which might be the impetus behind ABC's decision to delay any serious negotiaions with Ashley.

It's Summertime. People are on vacation. The Sweeps are yesterday and the Fall is beckoning.

It takes a village to build a better Bay Area, anchor included.

I guess.

  1. Willard is audibly sipping from a cup, and the mic has picked it up at least 3 times.

  2. The show literally sucks.

  3. I'm not a huge Krueger fan and find him pretty dull to listen to. But you're constantly criticizing local sports radio hosts as being too distracted with trivial non-sports topics, and here's Krueger, who while dull, is very knowledgeable and offers more serious sports talk and you hate him too. Not sure what sports talk you would find interesting.

    1. I know it's aiming high, but there's Rich Eisen who can interview a Better Call Saul actor about what he accesses within himself to better understand his character on the show. Then he'll talk about the ramifications of USC and UCLA joining the Big Ten.

  4. Krueger is better than 90% of the hosts on 95.7. He's not for everyone but if you are a hardcore sports and don't care about what's on social media he is excellent. During the NFL season he and Greg Cosell are really top notch.

  5. Someday the Bay Area will have an actual sports radio station again . . . sigh . . .

    1. Don't hold your breath. We the Boomer generation are the last of the people who came of age listening to radio and watching TV. The generations behind us get their information and entertainment in a different way. I'm saying that sadly, not proudly.

    2. Once the big reset kicks in we will have very limited internet access, and the govt approved radio stations(KGO and KCBS) will once again thrive. 4 hours of internet per day...4 hours of power...and limited trips to the local water truck for drinking water.
But we will gladly put up with it...for the sake of global warming.

  6. Larry Is a phony who was never good at sports like Murphy, pauli crap and the alcoholics Papa and Lund. Who would marry John Lund????????????????????????‽?

  7. As long as Krueger isn’t Radnich’s side kick that’s an improvement.

On another subject.we saw a proposed KGO radio mixed doubles tennis tourny to be announced.
Pat Thurston and "Sherod" vs John and Ellen Rothmann in one brackett. Ronnnnnn Owen's and Ryan Scott vs Nikki Medoro and her kids in another. All proceeds go to Steve Moskovitz ego

  9. KNBR and 95.7 are only worth listening to when actual games are being broadcast. Otherwise I never tune in to either station

  12. Larry Krueger is one of the better hosts in the Bay Area , very knowledgeable and seems to have solid reasoning for his sports takes . Willard is the absolute worst (Copes is actually even worse but I don’t even count him as a host) and is an immediate channel flip. Give John Dickinson and Krueger a full time gig and send Willard / Dibbs / and Ratto down to AAA Fresno .

  13. Anything is better than Buecher, Townie and Huff 7-8 years ago.

I’m pretty sure Huff was in the Jan 6 mob. That guy was a hillbilly in the 1st degree.

  14. Willard is the aural equivalent of a tooth extraction ; it's too bad,(for me), because I like Dibley, but don't listen due to Willard. The other nauseating host at that station is Bruce; total blowhard.

  15. Dan is in Europe, maybe he’s joining the BBC 😂😂😂

  16. The problem with Willard & Krueger & Papa and Lund, Tolbert and especially FP Santanga-bore is NO ONE takes calls... Ever! Listeners don't want to hear you drone on & on for segments at a time then cut to commercial. Then a brief with some writer from The Athletic followed by more lip service. FP... SPORTSPHONE 68with Ken Dito & Dave Newhouse took calls from real Giants fans after the game. Local radio... Your days are numbered. Those network shows from CBS Sports & ESPN are cheap. Don't need local "talent" and I use the word "talent" tongue in cheek.

  17. KGO should team Ashley and Lim together for 10pm. That'll give KTVU a run fur their money

    1. I have to agree. KTVU really is mediocre and Mike Mibach is FUBAR. They dropped the sports anchor and it is a revolving weather anchor. Ashley and Lim would be be formidable. I would watch 10:00 on KGO.

  18. It’s pretty obvious Rich isn’t a sports-talk listener(which is fine it’s not for everyone), and I do agree there’s a dearth of people who are on the radio who know anything. Krueger is absolutely one of those and whether you like the personality or not he’s at least knowledgeable and passionate mostly regarding baseball and football. He’s there to talk sports and that’s what is needed. Not the pop culture/social media/etc that plagues most other sports talk shows. He should just have a show like he had back in the day for sportsphone, take calls and not have a partner to drone on.

  19. 95.7 Should have hirec Rod Brooks.

  20. Willard and Dibbs are godawful. JD and Krueger is a good call!

  21. Dan Ashley is not going anywhere. He's too old to start talking about 'seeing other people'. I don't know what he's doing in NY, but I doubt if it's fishin for a bite. Adults play Mind Games too, by the way.

  22. Ken Dito was a 2-bit hack who was also a know-it-all. He was a PE teacher at a high school in SF. The only reason he kept getting radio jobs is because his buddy Joe Starkey always used to put in a good word for him. But he never stayed long at one station because management soon learned that he was unprofessional and boring. It’s amazing he lasted as long as he did.

    1. Maybe Starkey can get him a job now battling bedbugs, termites and RODENTS yikes!!

    2. When Ken Dito was on the radio, I think Sportsphone 68 was the only sports show on local radio. KNBR had other non-sports programming and music during the day.

  23. Tihere’s another guy who is a joke. Ever hear Starkey’s description of “the play,” that amazing Cal win over Stanford back in 1982? There were 5 laterals on the kickoff return but if you were depending on Starkey’s call, you couldn’t tell what was happening. It sounded like an hysterical fan was behind the mic. Dito actually filled in on a couple of A’s broadcasts back in the mid 1979s. It was embarrassing. I’ve heard high school snnincers who were better. Dito was a joke!

    1. I always thought Starkey's call was overrated. Pete Liebengood's call on TV was much better.

    2. Liebengood's was much better. Even if you had to wait until midnight to hear it, in the days when Saturday games were not televised live.

  24. Agreed about Ken Dito; he always sounded like he just ran a couple of miles into the studio, out of breath, frantic. A friend of mine recently posited that Starkey is by and large not a good announcer, there is too often confusion and he has to retrace his steps and correct himself. Do any of you TV or radio vets know what ever became of Jim Steck? Him I kind of liked.

  25. He Rarely tells you where the ball is after a pass or a run, who caught it, who made the tackle and what down it’s going to be. Just basic information. The guy has no concept of how to call the game. He should retire and stop Embarrassing Cal.

  26. Why is Jim Kozimor moving to Nashville??

  27. Does anyone actually care about ‘Kozy?’ He’s annoying. Plus he’s a right wing Trumper.

  28. It's not really that bad..
