Mark Ibanez Happy Party on KTVU; (Even Though it was Sort of Fake); Hartel/Eikel MIA (Wonder Why); Waldman Unease at KRON; Cook-Yamamoto No KPIX ID; No Time for KCBS' Alisa Clancy; Holmes-Savidge 5 PM En-Fuego; Friday Coffee

CONSPICUOUSLY absent from last night's KTVU farewell to Mark Ibanez --News Director, Amber Eikel and GM, Mellynda Hartel--both of whom made the call to tell Ibanez to retire and didn't extend him contractually one last time.

Stay classy, KTVU.

In case you missed it, here's is Ibanez's sendoff.

Warm and fuzzy all around, I'll reserve comment, other than to say, Mark is a good guy and I just know he'll pop up somewhere, maybe in a non-traditional sort of way, but he's not going to sit on a couch and watch golf, as he said.

*Yes, of course 43 years is a long time and no one, no thing lasts forever, but Ibanez didn't exactly look old and wretched. He could very well have continued forward another two or three years, it's just that KTVU and its inept managers, via Fox's institutional want to phase out sports on its O and O stations, told Ibanez to go away...he will land somewhere, as I predict.

*I'm going to resist the temptation to mention that I didn't see Frank Somerville at last night's lovefest at Channel 2--now THAT would have been a doozy.

*Every news organization today is on high alert hoping it doesn't have to publish a story that looks to good to be true, you know what I mean, you fool.

*Ibanez has an NDA but not a non-compete agreement, there's a difference. *Hello, KPIX? (stay tuned).

*Anywhere else in this world, of course a real newspaper and its website would cover, some way, the final chapter of a sports anchor's 43 years, see ya, but the Chronicle, a lousy high-school newspaper, is too busy covering burritos and purple houses in the Mission.

*Justine Waldman and KRON have a disagreement: she feels srt of frustrated that she's been relegated to the minors for over a decade while others have been promoted. I like Waldman a lot and 3 PM doesn't cut it. Waldman is married to Grant Lodes, which complicates a lot of things.

*By the way, I like Lodes too. Underrated anchor.

*KPIX has NO soul. No strong, identifiable, face-of-station anchor, personality that viewres can relate to which has been a constant at PIX for years. You can't operate and function, let alone have any degree of presence in the market when there's NOBODY at your station that serves as a liason to the community. PIX needs a boss to not only rearrange the furniture but also cleanse the entire living room and get rid of the cardboard cutouts on the couch.

*Allen Martin? Hell no. Sorry.

*Liz Cook and Ryan Yamamoto? Oh god no.

*Cook has greatly improved over the years but she's gone back to zero-personality and needs to show w little sense of humor every now and then--Yamamoto, I'm sorry, sounds like a woman, yeah, the voice is just plian awful

*Yeah, KSFO continues to be for sale--and you can buy it, any day now. And it has a great signal but here's the problem: KSFO is dead radio and radio is going dead any day now.

When you bring your kid to the studio and let her do a weather forecast, once, it's cute, two, three, four times, not so cute.

*Alisa Clancy, the giggle woman anchor at KCBS, had another rough time the other night...at 9: 45 PM, she announced it was "7-45." Worse, she made no mention of her error. Five minutes later, as to acknowledge her blunder, she was careful to slowly enunciate the correct time. Mistakes happen, but at KCBS mistakes are part of the business model now.

*I asked a KCBS contact about just how bad it sounds and the person just shrugged their shoulders--as if to say, "we give up." The people who run KCBS either have pictures or are just damn lucky.

*Dark horse duo showing promise at KTVU for a possible 5 PM news placement: Heather Holmes and Alex Savidge: they're good, not by any means great, but the higher-ups seem to think they have chops, whatever. That'll be good news, maybe, for Holmes, who's been waiting on deck to have her own primer for at least a decade.

*Later.

  1. Heather Holmes was so vapid and fake at last nights goodbye to Ibanez trying to make it all about her as usual. That woman spends half the show looking at herself in the monitor, watch for it now that you know, it's pretty entertaining. KTVU sure is starting to look like a true Fox affiliate now. Still amazes me the bay area buys that bullcrap.

    1. Are you sure? Heather Holmes didn't seem fake to me in the sendoff. All her words were sincere.

  2. It was hard to concentrate on what Mark was saying with the Asian woman in the background. Yowza!!! Who is she?

    1. Not sure if she is Mark Ibanez wife or maybe a close friend of his family, or maybe a relative? It was interesting he didn't introduce her.

    2. That hot piece of ass was NOT his wife since he said his wife couldn’t be present at the contrived send off. I sure enjoyed every time she smiled. Wow!

  3. I didn't tune in. I rarely even bother with ktvu anymore. I know I said Ibanez was a jerkoff or something to that effect but I actually like him and thought he definitely had a few more years of broadcasting left unlike that old codger Tom Vacar. I knew you'd give us a full report Rich and what you said was what I expected I'd see if I bothered to tune in.

  4. Mark, take some time off and decompress. Maybe reevaluate things, maybe not. Move as the spirit moves you. It's not retirement. It's the next phase of life.

Trust me. It gets interesting when you take your hands off the steering wheel.

    Happy Trails!

  5. No woman in television, ever, would be allowed to stay on the air as long as Mr. Ibanez, or Mr. Vacar. If a woman retired or didn't have a contract extended at age 50, you'd say nothing, except tell her to "smile" more often.

    1. Some of the commenters on here might not like the way Tom Vacar looks, or that he's aged beyond the typical TV "sell by" date, but the guy was and still is solid. Fox may be afraid of him shoving his boot down their throat with an age discrimination lawsuit, but so what? He can still do the job (as could Ibanez), but probably has more than sufficient reason to be surly about the clown car that now runs KTVU. However, a viewer who doesn't know the backstory isn't likely to find fault with Vacar's reporting or on-air demeanor.

  6. I always laugh when I see all of the people jumping on the anti Fox bandwagon on here. Lemmings as far as the eye can see.

I can't wait for the numerous anti-CNN blog posts to come what with their facing a plethora of lawsuits by former anchors and employees. Lots of accusations of news manipulation under the Zucker regime to make the right look terrible and the left look like unicorns. Certain segments of the population eat that up (see some of the comments here and listen to John Rothmann's "callers") and feel they are on the morally high ground. #brainwashed and #laughable

    1. What's laughable is someone who is still on the Fox bandwagon when their primetime talent is supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Morally bankrupt really more than laughable. They're broadcasting outright LIES and have no business using the word NEWS in their title. Play it in Peoria buddy, you won't find many takers for your crap here in California. See folks? This is who is watching KTVU and their slanted national stories they run from Fox network. No thank you.

    2. So I guess this weird anti CNN guy is going to be on here every day now? Isn't there another blog for that?

  7. Alisa Clancy seems like she's at a giggle party.

  8. They should have waited until tonight. April Fool's Day seems appropriate for the KTVU brass.

  9. Interesting that no Bay Area TV sports anchors sent well wishes to Mark. And no play-by-play guys.

  10. I thought the KTVU sendoff for Mark Ibanez was a pretty good once considering the circumstances with KTVU currently. It was pretty cool all the people that showed up, including Warriors PR guy Raymond Ridder. Fred Ingles was there, Mark Ibanez' family was there, they mentioned Dennis Richmond. It would've been cool if he would've been able to came too, but I think this type of sendoff was the best Mark Ibanez could've hoped for.
