Neerman's Awful KPIX Performance Gist of 86, Not "Crew Safety"; CBS Not Impressed With PIX Output; Somerville Highest-Paid Anchor; But Not Close to Van Amburg; Medoro-Burkhart KGO Radio Bore-Fest; KNBR Too; Allen Martin isn't Claudine Wong; Wednesday Wash

IF YOU THINK "crew safety" was the gist of why Mark Neerman was fired from his ND gig at KPIX, you're naive and probably think Spiderman is real.

CBS powers that be have been UPSET and highly agitated that under Neerman's watch, PIX has been in ratings ABYSS for years, almost since he took ver after Dan Rosenheim. CBS sent a team to SF to conduct an internal audit as to what the hell was taking place. It wasn't a good outing. It determined what we all know: PIX has DRAB personnel. It can't keep any decent reporters. It has ordinary anchors and a weak look. Hell, when Allen Martin is considered your best anchor, you have problems. Lots. And Neerman took the hit. It should have happened a long time ago.

*Frank Somerville--at his zenith about a decade ago--was the Bay Area's HIGHEST-PAID news anchor, at about $626K a year. It was a lot of money, sure it was, but Van Amburg made well north of a MILLION, back in 1986 no less and that was the highest ever.

*If you want to know why KGO Radio and KNBR are so SCREWED UP, hold your nose and give a listen, like this morning...when 6-10 AM BUST, Nikki Medoro was making Covid-19 jokes and her imbecile co-addict, Bret Burkhart, was making FORCED and CONTRIVED laughs, it was GROSS and SAD, much like Medoro's show and TERRIBLE RATINGS. Worse, Medoro inflicted colonoscopy pain to Bay Area listeners by allowing DULL and DREARY producer, John Daly, onto the microphone. Daly has all the interesting moxie of a Folsom Street donut shop. And Burkhart is about as entertaining as a Tenderloin feces-littered side street. "Wow"? Just plain woooow.

*Meanwhile, on KNBR, the gruesome twosome known as "Murph and Mac" were pontificating some useless pop-culture trivia, much like their HORRIBLE RATINGS, the info was the latest trend-setter for this DOUBLE pack of mediocre BORE-FEST. KNBR, the alleged sports leader, right, about twenty years ago on The Frank and Mike Show.

*Allen Martin looks like the guy you see at an IRS audit and later tells you you're screwed. His goofy glasses don't help. It could be worse: Martin isn't Claudine Wong.

*SPEAKING OF LOOPY KTVU, is there anything more nauseating to view than dopey, depressing Tom Vacar? He's what, about 98 now? Vacar used to be a decent reporter and OK personality, now he looks like some retired San Leandro SPCA manager. Vacar is only at KTVU because they don't want to fire him cause he's a lawyer and fear his wrath. My God, what a totat calamity.

*Emma Goss on the news desk at KTVU: and she's not Vacar. Nuff said.

  2. I submit that the single WORST sports talk show in a crowded local market is Willard and Dibs. They are GODAWFUL. No, we don't care they played sports in junior high school, what they are currently eating, and their repeated reference to personal friends and family. Plus, NO athletes or people or any note appear on this tire fire.

    2. Dibley has hired, fired, rehired, fired, rehired all in the span of like three years from kgmz..and mark windbag is more unappealing then matt koski, mikey urban and rick title combined

    3. Does anyone else picture Dibley writing the 10:43 reply and Willard writing the 11:28 reply?

The only decent sports radio show is ...

      I'll get back to you

  3. Vacar has become a really miserable, crotchety coot in old age. Some people age gracefully. He has not.

  4. Tom Vacar is just cranky and negative these days, he reminds me of Sterling Hayden on the Godfather and aggravated at every story or person he has to deal with. Your words that he looks like a retired san leandro spca official was spot on.

    1. I hear Sterling Hayden is going to play Tom in the upcoming movie. (Jennifer Lawrence is in negotiations to play Julie Haener, and Justine Bieber is interested in the Frank Somerville role.)

  5. KPIX has some bright spots.
For news, not dippy glamour, CBS-5 has Da Lin.
From time to time he produces some interesting reports as well as daily stories were he gives the actual facts.
One recent story about the killings and shootings in Oakland.

Lets hear it for Da Lin... Clapping sounds from the viewers.

    5. The report by Da Lin on the rate of Oakland Shootings each year was excellent! His use of graphs and maps to show and tell the story to viewers was creative and compelling. His report was really well-written and produced.

  6. Van Amburg was money and worth every damn cent! Miss him. The dreck that is paraded out there now is a clown show audition.

  7. Van Amburg was the best. He got paid very well until.....Capitol Cities found out, then they said..."Who is this guy Van Amburg and why are we paying him so much?" I remember it.

  8. KNBR has some real management issues having their main players off on vacation at unusual times of the year. They have nobody working the weekend, learning the craft so they can fill a 6pm-10pm shift- how long has this been vacant? 10pm-5am it is CBS Sports Radio with zero local emphasis. One of the better performers Copeland comes but only for an hour. Maybe it is a money issue from the Cumulus financial troubles. Management is not doing the job, not managing and developing the talent. Murphy is a very good interviewer so I disagree with your opinion on the Morning Show.
The same goes with KGO - a 1.0 rating has got to be the low point for that once proud and highly rated station. They also lack the managenent acumen to develop talent to the point they can take morning and evening drive time keep and ATTRACT listeners as Eason, Dunbar and Wygant and others did.
Rich, keep talking about radio as you are the one of stature that seems to care about Radio in the shrinking media in the Bay Area.

    1. When they rate a radio station like KGO are they talking about a certain target demographic or total listeners. And how do these rating's people know if I'm listening or not.

    2. Back in the day, most radio and TV people honed their skills in small, medium and large markets, either after college, broadcast schools, or by knocking on doors with the talent they had hoping to get to the majors, much like baseball players. If you learn and develop, you move up in markets and make more money, if you were motivated and lucky, however, not all make it to the majors. Now, these cheap non-broadcasters hire anyone off the street that will work for cheap that have little talent and/or experience and that's exactly what you get. That's what is Rich's lament.

    3. KGO's days are numbered. The only reason Cumulus is keeping it going is that it's in Pelosi's district, and it has a hard left-wing format. That gives Cumulus a pass for all of the conservative talk stations it has across the country. If she tells the FCC to pressure Cumulus, execs at the cloud company can point out to her that they have KGO. But later this year, when the Republicans take over the House and she's no longer speaker, KGO will drop its current format for something that's more profitable. My guess is that they'll go one of two directions. One is simply an all-satellite format, with maybe a local morning show. That's the format of most AM talk stations today. Second, there's a new sports-talk format going around that they might try. It's kind of like Top 40 radio, where the hosts hit the hottest topics repeatedly, so anytime you spend 10-15 minutes with the station, you'll hear about the sport that you're more interested in. The format eliminates long, pointless commentaries by hosts and equally inane comments from listeners.

  9. All local news is pablum. The stories are often filled with spoon-fed facts from one-side. Newscasts are filled with items that are not news or stories with no impact or relevance locally. It is mostly junk I care not to watch. Not sure why people still do.

  11. Here's something you might want to look into, Rich. Emma Goss disappeared in early October. Now she's back. One could just say she was out for a medical or persona reason, but her bio also disappeared off the KTVU web page. As of this afternoon, it's back. https://www.ktvu.com/person/g/emma-goss

Did they fire her and have to hire her back? Did Amber fire her and now she's losing her power? Did Chris Nohr have somehing to do with this, and now that she's toast Emma has beenb rought back? Maybe something over the Emma incident is what caused Chris to become toast?

    Enquiring minds want to know.

  12. - Can't wait for Ryan Yamamoto to debut on PIX. Could be the needed gauze pad until more changes take place.
    - Burkfart has not aged well. And what's with the Depeche Mode reject hairpiece? Not exactly the one guy we want left over from pre-2011 KGO Radio. Smh

  13. On bright note, I love the Morning Roast with Bonta and Shasky. Real sports fans with good guests and fun social references.

  14. What exactly does Bret Burkhart add to KGO radio broadcast?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I like Claudine. She's real and she has a dry sense of humor.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ryan Yamamoto's voice is high pitched and soft, no credibility or authority whatsoever. Don't look for a ratings hike with the KPIX newscast.
