Elaine Corral Bolt from KTVU is, Sorry, News-Worthy, Then and Today

THE ITEM about Elaine Corral's mysterious exit from KTVU drew the usual "leave her alone" crowd. I'm not surprised anymore.

General sentiment was "why drudge this up after 20 years?" In addition to the fact there was/is tremendous shock following Corral's on-air resignation, even today after twenty years, is news-worthy. It's a story that should have been covered by the mainstream local media but that's another story.

Corral gave no indication that she was about to LEAVE KTVU. I know, for a fact, that her quiting wasn't just some issue involving privacy. She had a solid track record at KTVU and she didn't give any indication that she was about to leave, not even to her closest friends. One individual in particular, someone who was there that night sitting nearby, was blown away by her announcement. Even Dennis Richmond, the stoic one, was stunned. It made no sense and Corral's silence, even to her closest friends, was an equal shocker.

Sorry, but THIS IS NEWS. Maybe not to some of you but the rest, yes indeed.

Had this been a "normal", nothing out of ordinary event, it would have been no big deal. But it was NOT. It is still a subject matter that is of major intrigue inside various newsrooms, including KTVU itself. Corral didn't just split the premisses after more than 25plus years on the job. She didn't just BOLT town and call it a career. Her move was dictated by a in-house incident, or a series of incidents by someone. And it was SERIOUS enough that Corral had to sign a CONFIDENTIALITY agreement. Why would she sign that? After all, had she just decided to take a break from the biz and move on in her life, a confidentiality agreement would not be neccessary. This was/is unusual at best.

Mind you, this is no knock on Corral but an incidennt(s) that was the MAIN REASON she left KTVU is significant and the back-story that involved the NAME of someone at KTVU who was a powerful and major figure, deserves a look and scrutiny. We're not talking about some intern or third-tier newsroom gofer. We're talking about a major on-air anchor who left the building and whose impact on local media culture was SIGNIFICANT. So yeah, hell yes, this is worthy.

    1. Dennis Richmond was Mr. Big, Bad Anchorman, in an era where that actually was a thing. Nowadays all that matters is you take 763 selfies per day and talk like a girl and make painful forced chit chat with the weather babes.

  3. I wouldn't call Dennis an asshole, more a hard ass, He demanded perfection. A perfectionist.

Maybe it was the horny sports guy who drove Elaine, away?

    2. He was a perfectionist, alright...He would demand that those tasked with making him look "perfect", worked harder to do so.

  4. Back then everything was swept under the rug and women weren't able to speak out as they do today. Perhaps she had an Eliza Dushku moment?

    1. Nonsense, read my book. Women "weren't able to speak out"? You had to have guts.

  5. Rich, just let it go and move on. You don’t want to open this Pandora’s Box.
Makes me wonder who’s next on your exposé list? Roger Grimsby? Jack Benny? The Lone Ranger?

  6. If it wasn't Richmond, then try and remember the other prominent on-air male anchors at the time. Was Somerville doing mornings at the time Corral left?

  9. I was there. Elaine did not leave of her own free will. Elaine was told her contract would not be extended, but she would be paid to the end of the contract. She was angry, and added a page to the teleprompter without telling anyone. She believed hundreds of viewers would call and protest. Six did.

  10. Dennis Richmond had no problem with Elaine. He was a pro. Frank was on M2 and had no say about anything. It was a GM decision.
