Exclusive: Somerville All But Done at KTVU; Mulls Seattle Interest

Frank Somerville will MOST LIKELY be GONE from KTVU any day now; how THIS DEVELOPMENT is framed is unclear, but Somerville's 31-year stint (twelve as lead anchor on 6/10 PM News) at the FOX O and O (owned/operated) in the Bay Area appears to be a CLOSED CHAPTER.

How so?

A reliable source close to the suspended anchor --it's now been a month since Fox2/KTVU indefinitely suspended him over a well-pubbed editorial conflict---INDICATED Somerville is now exploring INTEREST from Seattle-area TV News stations. Somerville, for the moment, has ruled out a Bay Area TV station return. Somerville has not received a FORMAL OFFER from any outlet, Bay Area or even Seattle, but according to several media interests, a Seattle offer is LOOMING.

Somerville is said to have no official interest in a Seattle gig but at the same time, would be open to a move. His options in the Bay Area appear to be limited.

KTVU hasn't said a word. They've been intentionally mum waiting until all the commotion has died down and ...let Somerville twist in the wind. It's apparent ALL PARTIES have moved on to DIVORCE MODE, whch I said was an INEVITABLE closure to ALL THIS MESS.

  1. Somerville needs a gig when he won't have access to alcohol. Has he checked out Al Jazeera in a Muslim country?

  2. The sooner Sommerville is gone the better, in my opinion.

KIRO would be a good fit for Frank.

  4. Why would he be an attractive candidate for Seattle, or anywhere outside the Bay Area? Take away the audience's familiarity with him, and what do you have?

    1. Because stations are having a hard time filling all job slots in TV news. Experienced Producers, Anchors and reporters are all in short supply.
But I doubt that Q-13 in Seattle will make any offer...it's a FOX owned station.

Bullshit. There's tons of them. It's stations willing TO PAY FOR THEM that's in short supply.

The ideal candidate will have 20 years experience, still be living with their parents, and be okay with a salary range of $30-40,000 a year. That's their dream candidate. Then when no one shows up, they say there's "no one out there."

A brand new start and a shot at a second life.

  5. Adios Pendejo!

No sympathy for a self inflicted gunshot wound. This clown is a self absorbed mess. Don't let the door hit ya were the good Lord split ya!

    2. I (@11:26am) and @12:45pm have worked with frank to varying degrees during our time at ktvu. my overall impression, that i know others also share, is that frank walks around like his sh#t doesn't stink because he's mr. big, bad anchorman. if your not in his crew then he can't be bothered, but don't get me wrong, even if you're in his crew you never know which frank you're going to get. he is known to be very mercurial around the building, so between that and his general pompous attitude people tend to avoid him. I'm sure some will miss him but i can assure you that most of us won't. hopefully the big bosses will bring in someone with a good energy to replace him.

  6. So much space and time wasted on this guy. He reads off a teleprompter in a fake, husky voice while posting drivel on Facebook. Enough already.

  8. Great move for the Seattle market. Their knowledge of the internet is limited, and their inability to search for information about the new guy will work to his advantage.😏

  9. The replacement KTVU anchors need to stop saying, "...in for Frank" at the start of their newscasts and just forget about him. Hard to imagine Frank going to Seattle or any other sizeable town. His story will follow him.

  11. I’ve read that this man has done a great deal of good around his community. I believe that to be true. I’m giving him a break! He’s committed no crime. If he has a problem with alcohol consumption, it’s his problem, a personal one.

Why are you airing this out anyhow? He is not a government official or employee. You seem not to like him whatsoever, I see no reason to go wicked and nasty on him. Did he personally do something bad to you to command so much of your attention and axe grinding? All the gossip on here reminds me of my two aunties constantly yapping about other people’s business when I was young kid.

Quite creepy, this blog is. Hope you get some help.

    1. Alcohol is not a personal problem when it affects your job performance and the comfort of your co-workers.

What is it with this generation that thinks everything is a "personal issue"? That's just a lazy way of saying "Don't hold me responsible...for anything!" From getting Covid (I don't want to get sick because you're putting up this brave posture of demanding to know every ingredient that goes into your body while sipping on a McSlurpie just because in reality you're scared of needles) to driving intoxicated to sex in the workplace, when other people are affected by your actions, it is not a PERSONAL problem. Grow the f--- up and start acting like adults. It begins with taking responsibility. (It's a big word, but you can say it if you take it slowly.)

      > Why are you airing this out anyhow?

Um, because it's a media story, being covered by all the major Bay Area newspapers as well some national and even international ones (in the UK and India, at the very least). It's called news. If you find news about public figures "creepy," you're the one who needs to get help.

Go watch cartoons; they're probably more at your level. I think the Ruff Ruffman show is on right now.

    2. @4:33: Arguably the best, funniest, and most accurate comment I’ve ever seen, here or anywhere else on the web for that matter. Thank you for gracing us mere mortals with your greatness!

    3. When you’re a prime time anchor in a major tv market, like it or not you are newsworthy. If you can’t handle the good, the bad, and ugly being on full display, then you’re in the wrong line of work.
And while he may PERSONALLY be choosing to drink, it’s not a PERSONAL problem as it affects those around him. And when you go on a prime time newscast drunk and barely coherent, you have chosen to put the spotlight on yourself and your drinking problem.

If, on the other hand, Frank went home after work and drank in excess in private but never brought those issues into the workplace, then that would be different. But multiple instances of poor judgment in the workplace and visible effects of drunkenness isn’t a private matter.

  12. I tend to agree with 3:20 P.M. Negative comments on this blog comes off as flogging Frank for his problems. The comments here are a bit too much despite his position as a prime time anchor in a major market.

  13. Frank can team up with Tori Campbell in Seattle. Both can apologize for the other each night. Ho Li Fu.

  14. Who will be Frank’s replacement?

  15. Perhaps Frank should start over and follow in Veronica De La Cruz's steps and join NEWSY TV, a delightful new national news channel based in Atlanta and aired locally in the Bay Area on KKPX in San Jose with over the air signal broadcast from San Bruno mountain.

This career reset appears to be working suitably so far for her.

  16. Hey Fox...
Can you put Fox News Channel on 2-2 over the air ?
You have capacity to do it.

Not worth the pay wall of cable tv subscription.

    1. Is that why he walks his dog down Broadway, barefoot, with bandaids on his feet?

Seriously, anyone who wants to anchor a TV news show is not particularly wanting to avoid attention. And as to other posts, once you decide to become a public figure, that's pretty much it in the privacy department.

  18. > She has NO presence on KTVU

    And Julie Haener is....a star?!?

I'll take Heather over the robot with ribbons on her blouse any day, though I'm not a fan of either.

  19. Julie is just hanging on. She should do the right thing and move on and open up a huge chunk of salary. She doesn’t even seem to be at work very much anymore. Hang ‘em up and ride off into the sunset while you still have a salvageable reputation.
