Somerville Hot Topic Dictates The Show Here; Nothing New; Wednesday Wash

THE HOTTEST TOPIC (still) in Bay Area media ccircles (and somewhat, nationally too) is the ongoing status of KTVU anchor, Frank Somerville. People are interested in this story. A whole LOTS of people. Therefore, yes, I write what's hot. This is at the top of the domain. Some of you don't like it and yet, here you are. I will continue to pursue this story and its outcome. If you don't like what you see, sorry, I didn't force you to come here.

KTVU (Fox) has held internal meetings all week with regards to Somerville's status. NO DECISION is imminent. I texted Frank and again, asked for his thoughts. Somerville continues to be mum. Fox corporate in NY has also joined the meetings. I've said even if Frank were to return, his futute at KTVU is probably as a LAME DUCK until March. Then the DIVORCE is FINAL.

*Rumor on street: that Somerville seeks to run for Mayor of Oakland and abandon his TV News anchor career: juicy, funny and NOT A CHANCE. *Speaking of rumors: Mark Willard, the PM KNBR talker, going to 95.7 FM, "The Game" --yeah, as if that would help The Lame game. KNBR is seeking a nightime host--they've placed an ad in the trades.

*The whack-a-mole anchor format continues at KCBS with various anchors popping up here ans there, out of place and a major irritant to KCBS followers. The latest: Evening anchor, Jeff Bell, out of nowhere, shows up this week from 10-3 PM for Rebecca Corral, who continues to miss time for a mysterious medical malady.

*Dion Lim WON'T go to KTVU; if she were to leave KGO (ABC7) she'd go to ABC News in LA for about 3x the money. Circle7 will keep her and probably promise her eventual prime time.

*KGO Radio has a swell idea: make the talkers do an eight-minute podcast and not pay the talkers a dime for such task. Yeah, that's going over real well.

*Greg Papa and his crappy habit of calling everyone with nicknames (his own)-- Today, he spoke with Giants' broadcaster, Dave Flemming. Every other sentence, "Flem." Then, talking about Brandon Crawford, it was "Craw." And Ron Wotus, "Wotie." Papa didn't take English at Syracuse, it appears, "Pop." *The HEARST doc on KQED the other night was magnificient. Great stuff and a pioneering moment on the man and his various ways.

*Damon Bruce and baby pictures. Oy-vay.

*KTVU and KGO-TV: toxic workplaces galore. Hear the break room is filled with stories from the rank and file discussing resume updates. And I didn't even mention KPIX, where nothing means nothing.

Dennis O'Donnell: the MYSTERY continues.

*Payola, 2021: John Lund and a Modesto car dealership. Did they get you the gas card too, imbecile "Like you said, yes!" *Lund is one of those radio gypsies; he gets FIRED from Detroit to Sal Lake City, SF...until he moves on and desperate PDs need a body to replace. Enter Lund.

*If CBS wanted Juliette Goodrich to team up with Somerville, she's do it. She has family responsibilities, ofcourse, but she's also a TEAM player. She's not stupid.

*KRON, AGAIN, BEAT ALL stattions last week at 5 PM.

  1. Sommerville is the architect of his own misery and deserves no sympathy.Jules is not stupid and will not besmirch her character aligned with a philandering drunk!

Papa is just trying to fit in, of course if you are not an athlete or been on the field, it does sound rather pretentious and silly.

She may be a "team player," but she's quickly start looking for a new team if it came to that.

Not with a drunken loser. She is too smart and there is no benefit to this pairing for here. Just go Diane Dywer and leave the business.

  2. Why should Jules have to look for a new team? This is her home turf and soon enough Frankie will be back in the penalty box and out of her way.

  3. Dion Lim should leave, she needs the big bacon (big salary) to feed herself and her hubby. I wonder how much poker players make a year.

  4. - Lame Duck Frank
    - Who has no chance of even touching the Oakland City Council, let alone become Mayor
    - Lame is Lame, it's all the same. (Hearst was a legend, but Ali will always be the Greatest; still have the Burns series in mind)
    - Bell and the absent Corral both know Seelig is a disaster.
    - Dion HAS to replace Ming eventually!?! Didn't know her husband is a poker player.
    - As long as the Cloud Clowns still own 810, KGO Radio remains stuck in quicksand.
    - For Papa critics, the Pack's GW FG may have been a blessing, even at the expense of the double backfield-injured Niners.
    - Poor baby in the picture. Sad.
    - You mean there's no toxic air at KNTV or KRON, perhaps for good reason in the latter's case? As for PIX, thanks for reminding me of that classic Billy Preston song ("Nothing from Nothing means nothing, you gotta have something...."; RIP, Bay Gay fave).
    - Does Modesto even know how Lewd Lund is?
    - Poor next region to get Johnson Lund.
    - Juliette Goodrich has befriended peers at every Bay TV station, plus a few in Sacramento, Monterey, and LA. Jules knows how to choose both her friends and colleagues. The soonest a certain addict can move to 855 Battery would be in March, if the exit part of the contract allows that, and that is a big IF. Can't see Goodrich working with someone who has become a worsening head case.
    - Incredible comeback by KRON! Will GM Jim Rose's efforts lead to another shocking switch - like Nexstar & FOX swapping KRON & KTVU?

  5. KCBS must be getting short on anchors -- I know I heard Dan Mitchinson doing the midnight-2am shift and then the following morning drive. That's crazy.

    1. I’m trying to get Jan Wahl to come in and sub for a while. She can regale us with her tales of Top Hats and Tuxedos, and Willie Brown selling her dvd screeners for drink money.

  6. KCBS is nothing but a crash test dummy!Dump them all! Wonderley is a joke!Time to slate clean.

  7. KCBS is also short on traffic reporters. I heard Dave Fouts work more hours than his shift for Kim Wetherly. Victor Zaragoza worked past his usual shift also for vacationing Kim Vestal last week. Rich-- wonder if the morale at KCBS is the same as at sister KPIX.

    1. KCBS and KPIX used to be sister stations, but haven't been since CBS spun off its O&O radio stations to Entercom/Audacy 2 or 3 years ago. Now completely separate ownership.

  8. I really don't want to see Dion leave. However, for three times the pay I don't blame her. How much does she currently make ?

  9. The truly remarkable part of the Frank story is that the Merc and Chron have downplayed it. Each did a one-and-done style story, and left it alone, as they did when the Larry Baer phone-grabbing video came out. They do the one-and-done story so that if anyone complains, they can say "Oh, we covered that, now we have to move on to that big story about nail salon health code violations or the latest on how bad anti-vaxxers are." In any other market, the newspapers would be going wild with this story.

    1. Please relieve Mr. Sommerville of the arduous chore of having to report the latest news about a murdered young white woman.and a fugitive manhunt. Give him a new TV show, where the only topic is missing people who are not white. You can call it "Frank's Lost and Found Corner"He can throw up their pictures, one after another, after another, and tell us that to assuage his own guilt at having read some copy once about Gabby Petito, he will now only feature non-white subjects. Now that's "equity", and it won't matter if he's stoned while anchoring his new show. No one will be watching.

    2. @3:05 Excellent idea! He want to wallow in it, so someone should give him the opportunity.
