Bay Area No News Zone; KCBS No Confidence in Seelig; Waldman-Lodes Magic on KRON; Latest Somerville; Thompson Still Boring on KGO; Martin-Wong KPIX/KTVU Symmetry; Hurd Mentality; Thursday Media Schmooze

THURSDAY SCHMOOZE

A READER got it right: if this were NY, Philly, Chicago. LA, the Somerville story would be center stage. It would be cooler conversation central. The Internet buzz would be off the chart. But the Bay Area media domain is lightweight now. The news is filled with sweet nothings. The Bay Area's best high-school newspaper, the SF Chron, would rather discuss the restaurant scene and SF Gate, the best burrito in town. What a total abomination.

*At KCBS, a full-scale NO CONFIDENCE among some of the troops over the state of its all-news domain (740 AM, 106.9 FM) --ND, Jennifer Seelig is at the center of the storm. "She's lost the entire newsroom," a staffer tells me. "She has no leadership role. All the on-air people have no idea of the future. It's a train wreck here." Seelig has been getting away with her hijinks for months now, even as the station has languished in the ratings/. The Titanic is still SINKING at KCBS and Seelig continues to get away with it.

*Justine Waldman and Grant Lodes: KRON's power Super couple. She has been at KRON over a decade (from Boston) and he does the heavy lifting (anchor) at night. Both are supremely underrated. I used to think Lodes was a lightweight but darn, was I wrong.

*THE LONGER there's no news on the Somerville story probably means Frank will come back to KTVU but only until March and it's bye-bye. Fox suits don't want a BACKLASH on social media if they 86 Frank (there already is) KTVU is in a NO-WIN situation.

*I MADE A MISTAKE: I should NOT have placed PIX's Juliette Goodrich on the center of the storm but KPIX NEEDS A JOLT--so I said a Somerville-Goodrich duo would be DYNAMIC for KPIX. It would. But inadvertantly, I got Goodrich in the hail storm. She is busy tending to her mother and I had no idea. Mea culpa.

*I first heard "Take 5" on the old KGO Radio's Jim Eason Show back in the 70's. Fell in love with it instantly. Had no idea of its great heritage.

*EVERY TIME I cross the Bay Bridge (to SF) i glance at the old building on the bay (with background towers) that housed KDIA. What nostalgia, Lucky 13 and THE BEAST OF THE BAY!

*Mark Thompson on KGO (10 AM-Noon) has essentially a two-hour forum for his EGO, which is bigger than SF Bay. Thompson's silly, dumb, inane program is no place to talk news-talk. It never has been. It's a LAME attempt by KGO to cater to the younger demo who feast on pop culture and tweet on Twitter. Only Thompson is not the answer. He's BORING, dumb, un-interesting and he's a BLOWHARD. Thompson DOES love to hear his voice and by that standard, he's doing just fine only NO ONE listens to his show.

*Allen Martin, time and again, I hear he's a nice guy at PIX only Martin continues to look MEAN and ANGRY. He hardly ever smiles and when he does, it's more of a smirk. Martin should date Claudine Wong over at KTVU, Wong last smiled in the closing days of the Clinton administration.

*Claudine is Chris Nohr's favorite pupil at KTVU because, well, Claudine has to feed the family and Nohr likes that status because Nohr needs all the help she can get, enter Claudine. Nohr is the HR boss at KTVU.

*Channel 2: imagine what it would be like if they had no ratings.

*If Herb Caen were around and the Somerville story was percolating, oh my God.

*Hey Steve Kerr, keep your hands off my future ex-wife, NBC Bay Area's ace reporter, Cheryl Hurd.

*Julie Haener is in that stage of her life where her primary focus is on her son, (star QB at Fresno State, Jake Haener) which is good because it takes her mind off of asking questions to fellow KTVU journalists about me.

*KSFO: you got five bucks? Buy 560 AM.

    1. El Mayate @12:59. She’s gold man. Not the best pic in this article but she’s all that and a bag of potato chips!

  2. It's starting. The Oakland NAACP plans to hold a news conference to push for the reinstatement of Somerville. The idea that liberal/Progressive groups will go after KTVU's license could be next.

    1. Wow, just read that. This is how their dumbass "news director" handles what should have been a very minor incident, or not even an incident at all. They should fire HER, not Frank.

    2. How can they go after KTVU's license? They do as much for the community as KGO TV of Building a Better Bay Area fame. They do local reporting that's more in line with Bay Area values than the national Fox News network.

The NAACP is wasting their time. Maybe they ought to promote the idea of restoring a black anchor to KTVU, which they had for many years. Frank is so cynically using the community to save his career. Herb Caen would not approve.

How is Frank "using" the community? What has he done other than be suspended?

    4. He had a recent instance of a very bad, worse than usual, on-air episode of being confused on-air. That happened just a few days before he decided he wanted to do the Gabby Petino editorial. It made it appear he wanted to deflect from his recent bad performance by doing an editorial, which he never has done on other news topics (and seems like an idea appropriated from Black female journalists Joy Reid and Gwen Ifill). I think his supporters are enabling him but maybe aren't aware of his recent problems.

More than that, they show you houses in SF that only 0.001 percent of their readership can afford. The point of this, I don't know. It's hardly "news."

  4. You sure got it right about KCBS and its whack-a-mole scheduling. Horrible for listeners, disorienting for on-air hosts, and a part of the general downward spiral of station programming. Been a listener for a long time, but am about ready to bail on them.

  5. Wrong. Caen would not be gushing over the Somerville story. You have a poor memory of Caen's work.

    1. Look, a photo of Claudine Wong smiling. That's a first.

Fox is in a no win situation now with Somerville. They are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Fire him and suffer the wrath of the culture warriors. Keep him suspended and listen to the continual calls from the cancel culture mob. They bring him back and management has to worry every time he's on air about his next faux pas...not to mention Frank looks like he's about to squeeze the ink out of his pen while he attempts to not screw up the teleprompter recital. What a f'n mess.

What do you expect from a populace that continuously elects nothing but Democrats? John Rothmann had to do multiple shows explaining to them how to fill out their ballots in the Newsom recall. Yes/No. People were still calling in confused. You can't make this stuff up.

  7. - Bay Media does news, not hype, outside of the three SF teams.
    - Seelig, an Audacity favorite. Smh
    - It's great that Rose treats Waldman with decency, which wasn't the case with his predecessor.
    - Might the endless battles with the Oakland-Berkeley base be becoming too much for The Firm?
    - Mea Culpa, too. Was unaware of health issues in the Goodrich Fam.
    - Take Five is one of the greatest overall songs ever, not just greatest jazz songs ever. Released in the same year as Ray Charles' What I'd Say and while Elvis was in the Army. Not only did Paul Desmond compose a great song, but Dave Brubeck was also a very shrewd business man with his Quartet and afterward musicians.
    - Cloud Clowns and Mark Thompson? Makes too much sense. Smh
    - I figured the RL page wouldn't be impressed with Martin's 3PM role. Yep. I'm more impressed that Harvey Levin agreed to push back The People's Court to 4PM, so that PIX can have the CBS Evening News compete with World News Tonight on KGO-TV (regardless of it not being a fair fight; as respected as Norah O'Donnell is, she has never stood a chance against David Muir, and still won't here).
    - So Chris Nohr is in the best shape as far as KTVU management goes in the view of The Firm?
    - The 10:00 News is the luckiest broadcast in the Bay Area.
    - Herb Caen never cared for overhype.
    - The Real Kerr respects Cheryl Hurd like most of us do.
    - I didn't realize the KTVU-Fresno St connection until the QB name spelling became so obvious. I just go back to second grade with the punter's father.
    - The days of Sherwood, Harper, Smith, Nelson, and Simmons long gone

  8. Allen martin sans Tie and jacket at 3PM seems more relaxed and likable. Plus he's up again Ming Sze at 3 and despite her new hair and Dye job is still just awful.

  9. KCBS is in the dumps. What a disaster this once great station has turned into. It's sad to call this a bay area news station.

  10. I doubt Grant Lodes is a "lightweight" to pull someone like Justine Waldman.

If you know what I mean!

Back in the days of Jim Eason at KGO, I used to send Jim fake community announcements, and he would read them on the air. I used the numbers of people I hated. Best thing ever.

  14. I've listened since Al Hart was a in his prime, the station was great, I felt privileged to listen to that station with all the high quality talent.. Everyone had their time slot, the sports was EXCELLENT with Steve Bitker and Hal Ramey, but they sent those guys out to pasture one at a time.. sad.. I barely listen any longer.

  15. If Herb Caen were around what would he think of Mr Frank Slurreville’s inane Facebook posts? Those alone should’ve gotten him severe warnings in the past. Can’t imagine Mr Caen wasting any ink on Mr Krav Maga

  16. One of the things I loved about KDIA was the way the transmitter at the Toll Plaza overrode every other AM station. So if you were stuck at the Toll Plaza, you were listening to KDIA.

  17. The NAACP has marched for Frank. Seriously, that's impressive. Seems like he's become a cause célèbre. And Amber Ankle has become the next news director (after Pero) most likely to get axed.

  18. Frank needs to go, because he has become the story.
