415 Media Exclusive: More Frank Somerville Turbulence at KTVU; Lead Anchor Misses Two Straight Nights after Shaky Tuesday Newscast; Source: 'He's on Thin, Thin, Ice'; Rampant Speculation; Tension High at 2 Jack London Square

FOX/KTVU SOURCE TO ME: "He's on thin, thin, ice."

The source is talking about Frank Somerville, who once again, for a variety of reasons, is in a no-man's land. There's nothing concrete, nothing official because all sorts of rumor and speculation have surfaced over the status of Chnnel 2's "face-of-the-station." A status that is becomming more and more scattered as time goes by. Frantic? Yes. Chaotic? Check. Disturbing? Yes, with emphasis. And another form of urgency is taking place at KTVU's Jack London Square studios.

HERE'S THE LATEST:

Somerville had another bad night on Tuesday evening's newscasts, and last week too--in addition to being ordered by Fox brass to stay off social media, his on-air persona was once again disjointed and unnerving. He misprounced names several times, looked awkward and uncomfortable. He was seen, once again, gripping his pen and fidgeting as if he was in some kind of distress. It was tough watching.

Somerville was OFF the air both last (Thursday) and Wednesday night. Andre Senior and Alex Savidge filled in for Frank. Fox offered no reason for Somerville's absence but it was clear something was up. A source told me that Tuesday's latest on-air bizarro (slightly similar to his May on-air slur and awful misadventure) was not some relapse and that "Frank is ok." Which was then followed up with a firm un=explained defense. The source insisted Frank was fine yet couldn't explain why he was ABSENT (again) from the news desk for two straight nights. Again, there is cause for concern. And now, people at KTVU are left having to defend and protect one of their own when there's a lot going on and taking place.

It's a rough time at the local Fox O and O --for the record, some people, some very BIG people, including some you watch report the news, have been told, almost THREATENED, not to talk to me or else face ultimate consequences. At the same time, the KTVU management --notably, it's ND, Amber Eikel and GM, Mellynda Hartel have gone out of their way to read Somerville the riot act and try to ward off his various misdeeds. It's a practice, so far, that hasn't worked or taken shape and it's caused much friction at KTVU with many folks who believe Somerville has been the recipient of way too many chances.

Somerville would have been away today,(Friday) anyway since his schedule is Sunday thru Thursday so perhaps, his bosses will hope that this latest bruhaha will allow him to breathe a little and have a normal return on Sunday night but that seems sort of problematic now. Nothing is official. As of Friday, Somerville is still working at KTVU but his status is ever more shaky and uncertain.

And at KTVU, where the atmosphere is filled with tension and distress; where the HR bosses and suits have taken to INTIMIDATION and THREATS to tthose that dare talk to me, the timing could't be any worse as Somerville's travails seem to have re-ignited.

Sunday night could be interesting.

  2. People are now tuning in to watch Frank trip over himself. Is this what Fox wants? At some point their going to have to cut him loose. Better sooner than later.

  4. “Face of the station?” More like Ass of the Station.

  5. Hoping that once Frank is shown the door The Firm then turns there attention to pathetic weekend team of Frank Malliprop, Claudine Wonk and Posemary Orozco. This has to be the worst grouping of three people in tv news history. No chemistry, fake chit chat that is painful to listen to and no ability to comfortably ad lib. All three look miserable as they phone it in for three hours. The Firm needs to show these buffoons the door.

Now back to the issue at hand, fire the trio of bumbling buffoons!

    3. @2:13 PM: You’re right. The author’s nicknames are stupid. They should’ve at least had the decency to refer to the Mornings on 2 team by their CORRECT names which are Claudine (Ding-)Dong, Frank Mallipoop, and Posemary FECESco. I’m sure it was an honest mistake on the author’s part.

    4. You know what's even more stupid? Grown ass adults arguing over the internet over dumb ass nicknames. Oh the CRINGE is strong.

    7. LOL Let’s not forget the weekend crew has worked hard to earn their nicknames. I affectionately refer to them as Claudine “Sun Ting” Wong, Frank Mallidope y Frozemary “Botox” Orozco

  6. Wild speculation, but what if Frank has a medical problem that is causing his odd performance. The station's lawyers may be saying that management has to "accommodate" him as he shoulders through whatever is ailing him to avoid a wrongful termination suit. But if this becomes a distraction, management can always buy out the remainder of his contract (you say it expires in March 2022) and begin the post-Frank era.

The smartest thing would be to allow Frank to go public with his problems. If it's medical rather than alcohol, he could say that on the air and draw a great deal of sympathy and support. It would require management to take a lemon of a situation and turn it into lemonade.

Maybe he has a common problem that viewers could identify with? And I don't mean alcohol. But what if he has been diagnosed with, and I'm just making this up, Parkinson's Disease? What's the shame in admitting that to the viewers?

    1. because it's definitely not a medical condition.
      he's an alcoholic.

    2. 2:19 PM: and you know this because you’re his medical provider who has diagnosed him with alcoholism? Or because you’re a couchbound keyboard cowboy with no medical or substance abuse background who has somehow diagnosed a man you’ve never met?

    3. I know this because I know him personally quite well.

  7. Though totally different circumstances. See how the Dodgers handled the Trevor Bauer situation? His own teammates didn't even want him back. Now staff is forced to field awkward questions RE: F.S. Going the same route.

You fish or cut bait. Rip off the Band Aid and move on!

  8. Rich, thank you for continued honest reporting on this issue.

  9. Why doesn’t The Firm let Frank be honest with the viewers about his ongoing struggle, which I’m guessing is with alcohol? People have let him into their homes for over two decades and I’m pretty sure most would appreciate the candor and the fact there’s no shame in admitting you have a problem. We applaud when actors and athletes and musicians are open about their mental health or substance abuse issues, so why not Frank be honest about his? You may love him or you may hate him, but there’s no denying he has a humongous platform and ability to actually HELP people come to grips and be open about their own similar struggles.

  10. Frank simply needs to double his dose of Preparation H. Everything will be just fine.
