Is Heather Holmes Trying to Swoop In? Of Course She Is

Heather Holmes, the KTVU anchor looking for a primetime gig, seems to have found an opening, maybe not the full-time spot she's been angling for years but a spot nevertheless.

Holmes, who is filling in for Frank Somerville, one time almost a decade back asked she be offered a permanent nighttime anchor spot (not necessarily 10 PM) or she'd split and move to another market. It wasn't a direct ultimatum but in practical terms, it really was.

Only KTVU suits and pre-GOX ownership (COX MEDIA) didn't take kind to HH's threat. Holmes is till at KTVU and has stayed put largely because she wanted to remain in the Bay Area. More precisely, she never got a formal offer from another city for work. Although she could probably attain her wishes in, say, Austin or Akron, she's pretty much banking on a 5 and/or 6 PM gig here at KTVU.

The Somerville incident gives her time to swoop in but it won't lead to an immediate path for her. For one, as "anchor-ready" as she appears and her popular person with (male) viewers, Holmes hasn't been able to move the needle. She is hard-working and tenacious. She has support in the newsroom but she doesn't carry Somerville's weight, not now at least.

  1. It's Anchorman, not Anchorlady - and that is a scientific fact!

  2. Isn't HH kind of old/spent at this point in her career?

    1. When's the last time they put a 12 year old in the evening news chair? Don't be an idiot. The 20 somethings are taking over the KTVU reporter ranks and they're awful. Management is stupid at this station but they're not that stupid. Bringing in someone young would be a huge mistake. Also WTF with women in their 40s being old/spent. Probably posted by someone who would shit themselves if she sat next to them at a bar. Please you dang fool.

  3. Heather can swoop in on me any day of the week.

  4. I watched the 10 O'clock News with Heather and Julie on Monday and it went very smoothly. For some reason, Bill Martin seemed almost giddy.

Not that I wish him ill, but the 10 O'clock News used to be must-see TV for me. Frank drove me away from that with his annoying need to make a comment every time a field reporter finishes a story, and that damn forced laugh of his. Now I only watch it a few times a month. If Andre Senior or Heather took over Frank's spot, I'm sure I'd return to watching it more.

    1. Julie does the same sort of sanctimonious commenting, as often does Heather, and I assume management is telling them to do that. Makes me want to puke personally. So phony. I like the Dennis Richmond era. He just told the news, straight, and let us decide if we were happy, sad, or whatever. Now they have to hold your hand while they read the news to you.

    2. I've not noticed Julie or Heather going overboard with the comments like Frank. Julie does sigh and moan after a lot of sad stories, which is annoying.

    3. Man I miss the over-terse handoffs from Dennis and Elaine.

Lloyd: "So far 20 homes have burned this evening in the Oakland Hills"

Dennis: Llloyd Lacuesta...in Oakland.Thank you Lloyd. (teletype sound effect, phone rings)

  5. She might trip in those six-inch stilettos running to grab Frank's anchor seat.

  6. Go back to her Native Texas if she is not happy with KTVU. Her first aim is Julie, now aiming at Frank spot and when Julie is out, then a male anchor is in. I know her little trick....

    1. Everyone in TV has a "first aim" of promoting themselves. Didn't you know this?

  7. Holmes needs to take a few inches off that hair and part it on the side. Reminds me of a hippie girl I "dated" in the 60's.

  8. If a male anchor were angling to take the troubled Mr. Sommerville's spot, would you say he was trying to "swoop in"? You just can't stop the misogyny. It's who you are and it's really predictable and boring.

      Yeah....

      Why not?

      What misogyny?

    2. Female ambition is seen as witchy and evil. Male ambition is seen as strong and tough. Got it?

  9. Perhaps Heather H. will slip into Frank S.'s spot and in 3/2022, get it permanently. Heather H. is ok w/me. Personally, I like looking at Julie H. more, but that's just my preference. Looking at both anchors at the same time is fine.

Cristina R. could slip into Heather H's old spot if she wants it. Congratulations to Cristina R's new baby girl, btw. Some anchors never return, however, after having a child; I'm recalling Elizabeth Wenger and Anny Hong.

Frank S. and others should save & invest one's income as best as possible should medical and/or other issues can affect employment in no time. Hopefully, Frank S. has done so should he need to invoke early retirement (I'm also thinking of Veronica DLC, too).
