KGO Breakdown; Put Thurston-Rothmann on Weekends; Needs Conservative Voice; Dickinson-Kovay Score Well on Game; Saturday Schmooze

BROKEN DOWN, KGO RADIO was strong enough where the numbers count: mid-morning. PAT THURSTON clearly DOMINATED her time slot. Not great numbers but pretty steady and consistent. MARK THOMPSON was a DUD. CHIP FRANKLIN, so-so. JOHN ROTHMANN did extremely well although 6- 9 PM isn't radio ad sales nirvana. The MORNING SHOW? Poor, as befits its mediocre host who loves to talk to the PTA.

KGO, yes, doesn't have enough money to PROMOTE its hosts. It should nag CUMULUS every day because it needs to advertise. Especially THURSTON, who has now emerged as KGO's TOP talk-show host.

*THURSTON-ROTHMANN on Saturday? Yeah, like the old days, 5-8 PM or even 6-9. It isn't that radical and it wouldn't cost all that much money.

*KGO could do one more thing too: put a CONSERVATIVE on the air. JIM EASON transcended all political stripes because he was so damn good--fair too. OWEN SPANN was definitely right of center but you never knew it. That's a compliment.

*I'M GLAD Chip Franklin doesn't do that many radio ads; some people are on every five minutes.

*I SAW AN AD in the SUNDAY CHRON Pink section, so you know COVID-19 might be in nthe rear-view mirror. "might be." MEDIA PEOPLE hyying the fact they got their vaccination(s) Oh, I GOT MINE, Feb 8th and March 8th, FYI.

*OK, one decent show on 95.7 FM, "The Game": Post-game WARRIORS' Show with JOHN DICKINSON and RYAN COVAY. Passionate, believable, non-contrived and decent. Dickinson, I know first-hand works his butt off to be knowledgable and Covay sounds as if he really cares. It's evident.

*Thurston is good among a lot of reasons but her ABILITY to talk to people she doesn't agree with is solid, not to mention good talk radio, especially RADIO. You don't have to scream to be noticed.

*CHRIS MERRILL must have pictures.

*Did KRON add another weather board? You can't have a mere 17. You need a lot more.

*INSIDER MUST HAVES: perfect teeth. Be about 35-40. ETHNIC-centric, unless your ANDY BAGGARLY. Refer to pop-culture shows before 1985 and do a lot of giggling.

  1. Except she screams, full throttle. The other day she screamed that the cops dared to pull guns on George Floyd when he was sitting outside a store in his black Mercedes SUV, after cops were called by shopowner about the blue, wet twenty he had just foisted on young clerk. She described some movie where cops pulled weapons in a traffic stop, and bemoaned about poor George having weapons drawn on him in a car. George refused to show his hands, kept fumbling them out of sight when asked to put them on steering wheel, and then on his head."For Petey's sake", she screeched. Surely an alleged former Secret Service stenographer knows that cops approach cars with suspects inside and who act strangely, with the understanding that they could be shot. This was not a "traffic stop". You keep saying what stellar ratings Ms.Thurston has, but you never say what they are.Why is that? You claim today, in an aside, they aren't really that stellar, in the next breath, which is closer to the truth and always has been. There is nothing about any pat thurston show that isn't totally predictable, and you know it. Is she providing you with gossip or something?

Well, maybe it's because they did add a 6pm Sat/Sun newscast starting tonight.

  4. Thurston is a shrill lightweight. A child.
The last thing we need is seven days of her.
    Get Christine Craft.

    2. She does three shows Sunday night at the Tropicana already.

    3. You haven't listened in a while if you think Thurston is a lightweight.

  5. Gary Papa stole his "Touchdown SAAAANNNNFFFRRRANNNCCCIIISSSCCCOOOO" gimmick from the P.A. announcer at Cupertino High School. The guy has been saying "Touchdown CUUUUPPPPEEERRRTTTIIINNNOOOOO" for years whenever they score. And even though he's just a P.A. announcer, he offers more insightful comments during a game than I've ever heard from Papa.

  6. KGO has ZERO interest in improving. It's been years since it was destroyed! A 10 year old could fill a better line up. Just let the KGO obsession go! KG what?

  7. Rich, I think you should marry Pat Thurston. Once you divorce Veronica De La Cruz, that is.

  8. KGO is the Balance of Nature radio station.
Pat Thurston believes in the stuff. It works for her.
Where is the “science” in that snake oil?
    What does Fauci think?

  9. What happened to KGO radio?
Brian Copeland was fired from KGO radio in January 2018. Former KGO 810 radio talk show host Brian Copeland has filed a scathing lawsuit over his firing last year, claiming race and age discrimination. ... The station has returned to talk radio but in the last ratings report was ranked 21 out of 40 stations.Feb 10, 2019

  10. John Dickinson knows his stuff. When he and Steinmetz had the weekend Warriors show, it was like swooshing fine wine. Who wouldn't want to hear in so many different ways how great the Warriors were?

Also, a shout-out to Jim Kozimor and Whitey Gleason (a.k.a., the Scrubs). They are hilarious together especially when they have tongue firmly in cheek.
