MARTIN has logged nearly three decades at KTVU, one of the "core-4" station nightly personalities that has made the "10 o'Clock News" one of the most popular newscasts in the Bay Area and the envy of the industry. Although Martin's presense was not as pronounced as the others, he certainly was just as significant.
Lately, however, Martin's on-air demeanor has not been as strong as in the past and he's labored quite significantly and it's showed. Forecasts have become inconsistant; on-air broadcasts had noticeably become too much of an adventure; Martin's weather acumen had become an issue.
So his impending leave is not that much of a surprise. A replacement hasn't been named but KYLA GROGAN, a popular fill-in is probably a LEADING candidate.
I have no idea what the hell you're talking about when you dis Martin. I see this as a big loss.
ReplyDeleteI like Bill, but I can't blame anybody for retiring especially after this crazy year. So good for you Bill! I agree Kyla would be a good choice. Have we ever had a female Chief Meteorologist in the bay Rich?

DeleteAnd Kyla surely won't be named chief, over the heads of vets there. She'll probably take the place of someone like Rosemary Orozco, who will be rotated up.
I thought Christian Spencer was chief at KGO - is it Sandhya? I think Rosemary stays where she is. No offense to her but I take Kyla more as an evening show personality.

ReplyDeleteI doubt they're letting him go because of his forecasts. They all just give the National Weather Service forecast. And his "on-air demeanor" has become more conversational. Instead of lecturing to the audience, he's having a conversation, and I enjoy his rambling. Too bad there isn't time for him to go off on tangents. It would make for good TV. No, the reason isn't any of those things, it's money. It's always money. He'll be replaced for somebody who is willing to work for half the price.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anybody is pushing anyone out. Bill and Steve are both in their 60s. They're going to want to retire and enjoy life without the ol 9-5 at some point. I wish I could!
DeleteHe's retiring. He's not being "forced out" for "money." He's been wanting to leave for some time now and as it is he goes home in the early evening to have dinner with his family before returning for the 10.

Then why are they often different, often quite so?
Google. Accuweather, Weather.com are all more reliable, up-to-date and succinct than any weather talker. Like radio traffic reporting, they will soon be a footnote.

DeleteCan we entice Jacqueline Bennett to come back to the Bay Area? She was great on KRON4. It would be interesting to see how she'd do on a real television station, and not on Pirate TV. Kyla Grogan looks anorexic. Rosemary Orozco should just stay on weekends. Mark Tamayo is decent, but it would be nice to have some pizazz for the weather, especially after seeing the drab and dreary Billy Martin -- not to be confused with the former A's manager, the legendary Alfred Manuel Martin AKA Billy.

ReplyDeleteGrogan is the best weather person they have but her ring light makes her look like a ghost...and I'm sorry, when she's in studio her knobby knees aren't doing her any favors. But she's got a decent personality and gets the job done. Rosemary is worthless and I can't see her advancing if Bill leaves.

Meteorologists ad lib everything they say on air. There is nothing to read. When the teleprompter gets to weather it says Ad Lib. Welcome to how TV news works 101 Featherhead. Weather and Sports are the ONLY parts of the show that aren't written by other people and fed to the anchors.

DeleteWhile Bill definitely knows his weather, there is no disputing that his on-air performance if often rambling and meandering. It seems like he’s been checked out for a while and simply phoning it in. Steve also knows his weather and will never leave that morning slot. Mark is perfect for weekend evenings and the 4 or 7 shows. Rosemary has no weather knowledge to speak of, comes off as fake and cold, and seems more obsessed with pretending to be a model as she launches her own ‘clothing line.’ That leave Kyla Grogan. She clearly knows her weather, she does very well on tv, comes off as very likeable, and is easy on the eyes. When she works with Frank and Julie the on air chemistry feels real. Here’s hoping that Kyla gets the prime time slot!
ReplyDeleteI saw Mark on mornings the other day. I think he's perfect to replace Steve when Steve decides he's all done someday. In the morning people have bigger personalities and his straightforward presentation actually shines there in a way it doesn't with the evening anchors. IMO

DeleteMost of these weather guys are boring. Ever listen to that Paulson guy on channel 2? If you ever have problems getting to sleep, just put on a Paulson weather forcast. You'll fall asleep in 30 seconds.
ReplyDeleteWhy Kyla? She left the station twice and what qualifies her to return the 3rd time getting the top evening spot. We call these disloyal anchors. Roberta should get it, she is older with years of experience. One thing, from KPIX too.
