KGO RADIO, with a major assist from Cumulus (who would have thunk?) is planning on spending quite a bundle of big bucks for its Election coverage. By the Cloud standards, quite some dough.
A plethora of political analysts (John Rothmann and Pat Thurston at night) manning the mics --plus numerous name others.
*4, FOUR! Producers. 2 Reporters in the field. At various SF locales including the North Beach restaurant to gage election night activity (if it's a long night and day, the booze and coffee will be flowing en fuego.) Paging Willie Brown.
*KGO source: "They are going all out on this night." Well, duh!
rich, i decided to compile a list of the most overused, common phrases used by mr.john rothmann..and this is someone who i agree with most of the time, but going to have some fun nonetheless..
ReplyDelete10. "will you do me a favor? i won't you to call me back in three months"
9. "the corona (long pause) virus"
8. "No, No im not going to let you do it sir"!!
7. "who do you believe? the president or (insert other name here)
6. "the president of the united states of america"!!!!
5. "karen, will you play that for me"
4. "its the democratic party sir/ma'am,not the democrat party, the democratic party"!!!
3."if obama had done it, the republicans would have impeached and tarred and feathered him by now"!!
2."I've known joe biden/kamala harris, nancy pelosi,etc...for years"
1. "my old boss richard nixon used to say"
Wasn't it a former cloud company employee who was known to have coined the saying- NOBODY CARES... I had no idea that KGO HAD that many employees...
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing they think Biden will win and win big. Otherwise, why spend all that money to have your ultra-liberal hosts appear with egg on their faces? Thank goodness it's only radio because if Trump wins (especially if he does better than he did in the last election) and if I were John Rothmann or Pat Thurston, I would be too humiliated to show myself in public. Remeber 2016 election night? Just look up YouTube videos of the media, and you'll see how they all looked like they came down with indigestion.
ReplyDeleteNo matter who wins, here in Calif. we will crush the orange faced buffoon. Trump will lose our state by a landslide. However, Trump will win all the dirt poor Southern States like Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, etc.
DeleteThese races are called when the polls close in Chicago. The networks have agreements with the FEC that they won't tell you the results but standing in front of all that data? They know.
DeleteHere in Ohio, all I see is Trump this and Trump that. I mean everywhere. Trump will carry it and win without much fanfare. It won't even be a late night.
Please don't call Pat Thurston a "political analyst". Nothing could be farther from the truth.
ReplyDeleteThat's as bad as calling Chip Franklin educated. Or a political analyst himself.
Do people really listen to the Radio for election results? I might tune into Fox especially if it looks like the orangeman is going to lose for entertainment purposes.
ReplyDeleteIf that's the case, you'll be watching CNN.
DeleteIf I owned the Cumulus SF cluster, I would have flipped KGO to a satellite-fed format long ago. It costs more than it brings in. KGO is supported by its more popular siblings like KNBR, KSFO and The Bone. It's a shame that they have a 50KW blow torch and get such minuscule ratings — with quarter hours as low as 0-500 listeners during daytime. This election night splurge isn't going to wright a sinking ship. The only way they'll get their investment back is by promoting their election night coverage by buying other media. Do you think that's going to happen? And if it did draw in listeners sampling KGO, what's going to keep them as listeners when they tune in Wednesday and hear somebody like Nicki Medoro or Pat Thurston? I'd love for the old KGO to return, but these hosts aren't going to save things. Pat and John were relegated to late-night and over-night weekend shifts on the old KGO. They haven't improved since then. You said in another post on your blog that Rothmann shouldn't let Republican callers drone on and on. I agree. But it would be an improvement if he could engage them in debate rather than potting down their audio, talking over them and hanging up. Remember how Gene Burns could make a terrible caller sound interesting? I'm assuming Cumulus doesn't have a program director to help these hosts improve. Then again, it may be hopeless with this crew.
ReplyDeleteHow do these ratings companies know how many people are listening to a radio station from hour to hour and day to day.
