Bill German, the Chronicle's editor emeritus (left) and Jack Breibart--page one editor were in the newsroom --it was March, 1994. A different time and place. An active, thriving newspaper with real reporters and drive. Especially these guys. Sure, pre-Internet and no Twitter but newspaper gusto and vintage journalism. I knew both guys. Good men. Great journalists. The Chronicle, for all its knocks, was a great paper, a great read. Real local news. Herb Caen. Art Hoppe. Chuck McCabe even if he droned on an on at times. Love those computer terminals. Today's dumbest smartphone probably has ten times the candlepower. But the dumbest reporters in those days had ten times the mental power of today's "journalists."
