SF Radio Ratings Robust But Revenue Isn't; Rothmann on KGO Tonight; Homage to Willie Mays Scores Homer; Saturday Coffee (Audio)

Mug - Wikipedia

RATINGS ARE OFF THE CHART. People are at home, some working, some handling family and work too. There's a lot of SIP going on )Shelter-in-Place) and oh yeah, people are listening to the radio. Problem is, there's very little ads. Most of the sports are national ads with a slew of PSAs, not much revenue.

It's all pandemic virus=caused.

KGO here, has pretty much gone non-stop Coronavirus coverage with news programming, modest talk on the weekend. But that involves not just the expense of bringing in a host but a producer and engineer. Which in turn, given the extraordinary cost, negates anything over a three-hour show, like, for example, John Rothmann, tonight (Saturday) from 5-8 PM. I wonder what he's going to talk about.

*Speaking of Rothmann, his hour-long tribute to Willie Mays' 89th birthday the other night was just darn spectacular. Rothmann, an old-school San Franciscan, took plenty of calls and told of growing up watching Mays play the outfield at the old ballpark and Candlestick. It wasn't so much sports, (thank god) --more nostalgic and charming --and ode to the "Say Hey" kid and some great musical interludes. No artificial sound nor disingenuous chatter and BS, a terrific hour and if you didn't hear it, I have the KGO audio link here, take a listen.

  1. You do not have to have a producer and an engineer to do a talk show. For many years Bill Wattenberg,Chris Clarke, any of us who did overnight shows ran our own boards, produced our own shows. You do need someone like an intern to screen calls.

  2. Mark Carpenter's last day at KRON was last night apparently. COVID cost cutting I guess. KRON not betting on sports for a while? Not a good sign for KRON On either

  4. John does not name drop Crane radio and Cal Mart, he is doing commercials for them. KGO is not public radio, they need the advertising $$, many hosts have done the C.C. Crane commercials on KGO for years. Gene Burns use to do them, I think Dr. Bill did too.
