Steve Somers Can Talk the Talk; Former PIX and Sacto Anchor Makes It Big in NY at WFAN Sports 66

Steve Somers

 FLASH BACK...and then some

Who can remember Steve Somers? The Steve Somers that did sports as an 70's anchor at KPIX? and in Sacramento--He was always interesting. And not for everyone --but oh well.

TODAY, Steve Somers does overnight sports talk on NY's all-sports WFAN --he's an institution in the big apple--a place where he's been holding court since 1987.  A phenomenal talk personality with a huge following. Somers is especially popular now because he can talk both news, pop culture and sports too, in this environment that's a big time plus.

Somers doesn't know a lot about viruses but he talks Coronavirus --he is in NY which is the hot spot of the pandemic and his audience seems OK with that; sports-talk is this era isn't always topic A with Somers. Some folks like that, others do not. Somers cares enough to acknowledge his fans but is quick to point out there's a reason sports is still regarded as the "toy department.

  1. Speaking of KPIX, just turned on KPIX to. see a guy who looked like Kenny Choi minus the "Geeky" glasses doing a field story. I guess he's gone rogue undercover with the new look.

  2. I remember Somers as being really annoying on air. He made Radnich seem palatable at the time. Never was a fan.

  3. I remember watching Barry Thompkins and Steve Somers on TV when I was a kid. When I grew up and watched Somers, I thought he was a bit flaky.

  4. I don't remember when Somers backed up Wayne Walker. Someone refresh me as to what years. I remember the following Walker backup names - Jan Hutchins (during the 1975 NBA title year; eventually became news anchor for San Jose's KICU, now KTVU Plus); Fred McLeod (moved to Detroit and has been there since); Joe Fonzi (now, of course, Mark Ibanez's backup at KTVU for over 20 years, if not 25). There are probably more besides Somers that I have forgotten.

    1. Well the recently back to Hawaii, Rick Quan ,was brought over from Hawaii by Wayne when Wayne saw Quan's work in Hawaii and liked it so he brought him out to be his back up.

  5. Sports radio and Sportscasters should be furloughed along with weekday Traffic Reporters. It is interesting to note that one of the few local broadcasters to show something simple behind them as the work from home is Rosemary. I can’t imagine why Reggie wants us to see his Rent-a-Center furnishings and his BB&B wall hanging or why Jobina wants us to see her basketball trophies. So many of them seem to think books will make them credible. Gasia shows that she has no taste at all and what’s up with new weatherman showing off someone else’s Silver Star?

  6. It's common on this blog to see critiques of the physical attributes of females in media. Check out this fellow's unfortunate visage. No one notices?

  8. Somers rarely ever deviates from sports on WFAN. He bounced around a lot but was mainly the overnight guy from the beginning on the nation's first sports talk station. He's good at what he does but he has gone over the top with the "shmooze" thing to the point where it's almost too much shtick.
