Why do TV play-by-play announcers do a radio broadcast on TV? Let's just take hockey for example. I like Randy Hahn alot, but I'm watching the game and he's telling me the puck is carried across the blueline. Well, yeah, I'm watching, I can see that. These people are non-stop motor mouths. I'm not sure whom their intended audience is. There is obviously a difference between watching on TV and listening on the radio. Sorry, but this just bugs the hell out of me. Jamie Baker is another one whose incessant chatter goes on and on .. even when the puck is closing in around the net, he's talking about something unrelated and all of a sudden Randy has to break in with "HE SCORES". If Jamie were paying attention he'd shut up when a scoring opportunity is imminent. I guess this is just me.
Years ago in Philadelphia the Phillies had two announcers, Richie Ashburn (former Philly player) and Harry Kalas, who were exactly *not* like that. They weren't afraid to have long stretches of silence in the game if nothing was happening. They didn't micro-describe every little thing. They assumed the viewer had brains and was paying attention, and if they weren't, tough. Naturally this was long before everyone was staring at their phones all the time.
Peter, several factors. Many people are distracted. Several factors come in so traditional play-by-play is out the door. I actually like more descriptive calls especially if I like the broadcaster, such as Randy Hahn but I share your irritation.
Brian Hackney is my favorite local TV news person whether he's doing weather or anchoring (haven't seen him doing traffic reports but he'd probably make even that funny and interesting). For weather, he's sure a huge improvement over personality-free Darren Peck and squeaky voiced Mary Lee in the morning.
Hi Rich: With the Federal indictment of SF Public Works Director "Dirty" Mohammed Nuru for Corruption, Bribery & Extortion will the Feds now focus their attention on the mysterious circumstances regarding the death of SF Public Defender Jeff Adachi. In a previous blog post you wrote fearing a lawsuit the Bay Area Media are currently sitting on the real story of Adachi's death. Hopefully if the Feds do get involved regarding Adachi's death the real story will be told further confirming the long-time dirty, corrupt, pay-to-play nature of San Francisco City Government. Rich--What do you think? I absolutely love your blog! Cary SF
Vinny, you and I want that to happen but todays' metrics say no. Sign of the times. Truth is the old KGO will never be back -it was nice while it lasted.
I want my questions answered, but you'll get sued...any breaks forth coming in the Adachi case? would you be more open....to a face to face conversation (off the record?)
You were on an airplane that is about to crash with Heather Holmes, Ronn Owens and Gary Radnich you have only two parachutes. You grab one who do you give the last one to?
Hi Rich, Maynard from San Jose here. I would love to know which local stations’ 3 person contingent to Miami you think embarrassed themselves and San Francisco the most?
Truly, KTVU's infests, Ibanez, Fonzie, and Wong pretty much vomited on themselves. I can't watch anymore or I'd do the same. They are all pretty much an outrage. See ya, Maynard.
All right Richie, I'm chauffeuring kids around on a Saturday morning and I think it's finally safe to turn on KNBR because they should have the national shows on. Instead I get something called Paulie's Podcast and of course the first thing I hear is something about the Grateful Dead. My question is a two-parter: First, has anyone in the history of the world ever said "Give me more Paulie Mac"? And second, does Paulie have to pay to put more of his nothing-ness on the air? Gracias, Senor.
I thought Vic Lee retired.....I saw him last night on KGO7 talking about the Coronavirus being discovered in Santa Clara County. Is he still working part time.
Here is a different question for ya' Rich! Why is it, that in this case, over the past several days, all of the networks provide wall to wall coverage of the impeachment stuff. I mean, they are all broadcasting the same dang thing, so why do they ALL broadcast it? If they really want to broadcast it, then why don't they broadcast it on one of their sub channels, such as with ABC7, broadcast it on 7.2 or 7.3, or on KPIX, broadcast it on 5.2? Most people I know are pretty pissed that regular programming is interrupted for this nonsense when it doesn't have to be. Just wonderin', Rich! This is Jim in Alameda...
Jim: think of it as civic duty by the networks, but I'm hip to your gripe. They are not obligated to over unless it's the POTUS asking for airtime but they feel the need to have to, for atleast a portion of the time.
Hi Rich, any info about the A’s radio station situation? Are they going to stay on that right wing station? I heard the A’s were looking into buying a radio station?
What gives on the Alice Morning Show? Haven't listened in a while then go online to find that Uzette is nowhere to be found on the page...was she let go? Larry, Idaho...
is it possible that KGO radio has been playing the same Commonwealth Club speech, taped before the last presidential election, EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT for the last 6 months???

DeleteAfter Bay Watch, nothing compares to the high water mark they set.

ReplyDeleteRich,
ReplyDeleteWhat's your take on abc7 News "Building A Better Bay Area"? I'm getting a little tired of it.
I think it's patronizing and phony but Disney is all about image.
DeleteIs Brian Hackney the new full-time weatherman on KPIX?
ReplyDeleteYeah, if he wants it, probably.

DeleteDarren Peck and squeaky voiced Mary Lee in the morning.
Will Biden get the nomination ? Will he defeat Trump ?
ReplyDeleteProbably, or if not, Bloomberg and Kamala Harris will be ticket.

ReplyDeleteHi Cary, yes, yes, yes, yes...
DeleteWill we ever learn the truth behind the death of Jeff Adachi or is the coverup so overwhelming that it will die on the vine?
ReplyDeleteOne day when I have money for the lawyers you'll know.
DeleteOur fine Democrat leaders at work!
Deletewhat the hell is going on at the Alice Morning Show?
ReplyDeleteReally just re-arranging the furniture. I think they will about to re-tool.
DeleteSome broadcasts are also Simulcast - for both radio and TV. Hence the chatter (words eye view).
ReplyDeleteRich
ReplyDeleteCan KGO Radio be brought back to the Popularity and Ratings it enjoyed in the 70's 80's & 90's ? If it can what would it take?

DeleteIs Kyla Grogan a permanent person at KTVU (since her photo appears on their weather page) or is she still just fill-in? Love her.
ReplyDeleteI think she's the leader in the clubhouse now. Use your imagination.
DeleteHow happy is Kenny Choi this week with Michelle far away in Miami?
ReplyDeleteOne word: ecstatic.
DeleteOn CBSN bay area is anchoring just an extra part of their jobs now instead of chilling on the news room?
ReplyDeleteNiners or Chiefs?
ReplyDelete49ers by 10, something like 40-30 --(now bet the opposite to win)

ReplyDeleteOh shit, dude, Heather, I'm not that stupid.
Deleteright idea but not far enough. Throw one parachute out of the plane while you put on the last one and have H.H. hold on real tight

ReplyDeletePaulie works there because he's cheap and KNBR thinks hip people like him. More like, "put up with him." I can't stomach the asshole, podcast and all.
DeleteI thought Vic Lee retired.....I saw him last night on KGO7 talking about the Coronavirus being discovered in Santa Clara County. Is he still working part time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, for that kind of story, he slightly un-retired. I don't think he's lifting any furniture though.
