Thurston-Rothmann Mojo Make KGO Prominence; Live and Really Local; PG&E-Wind Event Not So Windy; More KTVU Embarrassment

THURSTON and ROTHMANN are really live and local

I WISH it would be more literal than figurative --the constant live and local ad barrage we get on a daily basis and we do with KGO Radio's Pat Thurston (Noon-3 PM M-F) and John Rothmann (6- 9pm)

Both have gained prominence at the reinvigorated news-talk outlet on 810 AM, it's a fact you hear almost every day and most certainly this week with the PG&E -wind event (I'll talk more specifically on that in a min).

Thurston has become KGO's de facto leader at the top. Her monologues have become must-listen. Her interviews are first-rate and no nonsense. While I sometimes disagree with Pat's more left-central leaning, I'm amazed that she's able to switch gear on a moments notice and conduct more centrist/moderate stances especially when she's interviewing politicians maybe not from the same stripe. It's a tactical move and sometimes difficult to pull off but Thurston does it with ease and it's remarkably effective and makes for entertaining radio.

Thurston has another specialty too and its her homage to local events and topics that are Bay Area centric and worth listening for that very aspect. It's live, it's local, it's interesting and cogent. What a concept. I wish more KGO hosts would do much the same.

John Rothmann, I've been a consistent admirer and dedicated advocate. His programs amount to college course lectures only we get to take part by listening on the radio. Rothmann is giddy these days, (sort of) because Trump makes it easy but he's also shifted from strictly politics to local topics and issues pertinent to Bay Area interests --the mural controversy at a SF's George Washington High school has drawn significant interest and intrigue, not only here but beyond and Rothmann has been both an advocate and foe. It's made for entertaining segments on KGO.

Thurston and Rothmann were dynamic on the weekend but now their five-day-a-week programs have become a KGO staple and I'm happy to hear their tour-de-force every day; it's always a good listen.

*The windy/PG&E event was significantly less a story than originally thought. That's my read and although significant portions of the outer Bay Area and valley communities had their power turned off (bummer) the vast majority of the Bay Area didn't have their power shut down.

Moreover the wind predictions by the weather people were not the extremely high gusts they forecast. I'm not knocking the weather folks but outside of Napa, Sonoma, and way far inland, there were very little wind events and much calmer than anticipated. We're not out of the woods yet but so far it's not as bad as we were told it would be.

*KTVU does it again; the local Fox O and O continues to embarrass itself on an almost daily basis. The latest joke, as outlined by Awful Announcing is further proof positive that the once-admired news station has become a certified joke. They need a thorough deep cleansing in Jack London Square.

  1. One of your best blogs in a long time, thanks Rich. Yes, Pat and John are great and covers a variety of subjects. I like Pat, but like you, she is a little to left for me, and although I'm no Trump fan, I think she goes over the top at time in her analysis of him, and her passion for impeachment, which she has been for almost from day one. At noon I often listen to Pat, but also turn the dial to Michael Savage and Tom Sullivan, both of course conservative, but can be critical of Trump. Savage was very critical and a good listen on Trump's decision to pull out of Syria, since he has been such a Trump fan, I take him more seriously when he is critical of him.

    1. I'd still hit it.

You gotta slap it up, flip it and rub it down.

    2. Have no clue what so ever you are referring too. Could you perhaps make your comment in coherent English?

  7. Pat's Friday show was very emotional too when she talked with caller Joy re forgiveness.
Yes John and Pat are the 2 leaders of current Kgo. They are excellent. But it begs further scorn at the wretchedness that is scumulus, that they originally decimated Kgo whose hosts were the best (RIP Ray), then hired utter fools like M Anthony and Twittmayer who don't know radio from a hole in the ground and continuously blundered and butchered the station up until this March after those certain bozos were canned and, finally, John and Pat were allowed to be on 5 weekdays.

But all along Kgo should have had them on, certainly since 2016. And they still need to dump forever into oblivion the disgusting A & G. And J Bachelor. Those hideous holdovers from the older regime don't belong at all now.

So Kgo, L Hammer to wit, gets some points for their part in putting John and Pat on 5 days a week, but they don't get a complete grade until they deal with the morning dreck, the late evening shill, and hopefully re-tooling of M Thompson and C Franklin- those 2 are fair, but those slots should be as interesting and listenable as those of Pat and John.

Couple more things: get rid of the bottom of the hour news breaks- total time waster; limit traffic to peak commute hours, just figure out how to squeeze more actual air time into the actual shows!

  8. I'm okay with Armstrong and Getty, at least for a morning show, I don't agree with them for the most part on politics, but they can be funny, and they are better than Sussman and Katie. However they don't need to be on KGO, most of the Bay Area can get them from their Sacramento station 650, or Fresno 580, which surprisingly I get clearly in Concord and even driving to the Peninsula. As for John Batchelor he is conservative, but he covers a lot of international stories, such as the protests in Hong Kong, he also has show on history, and he has interviewed authors who has written books on Democrats, I don't mind his show and sometimes even enjoy them. I leave work at 9:30 in Palo Alto, but I live in Concord at that hour my choice is Hannity, Hugh Hewitt or John Batchelor, I usually prefer Batchelor, although I at times have Hewitt on for a bit, I cannot listen to the hypocrite Hannity,

  10. Thurston is OK as a host, but its too bad she has sold her reputation to Online Trading Academy. Its one thing to carry a advertiser, but another when you do the commercials yourself...(and also appear on their weekend hour long radio infomercials.-- 860 AM)
Luring naive listeners into the "free class" which turns out to be little more than a full on hard sell.
First class free, but if you fall prey to their next offerings of classes expect to soon be spending from $7,000 and more for subsequent 7 day classes. Not at all unusual for students to spend $20,000 to $40,000 or more on classes that purport to give you the "patented" method to make huge profits.
Call them... ask them how anyone can make what Thurston calls a "monthly cash flow" or "monthly source of income"...
As though taking some course is going to give the average Joe the method to learn the secrets of the "pros"...
Take a look at this course offering given out by one attendee and posted on Yelp.
    https://s3-media1.fl.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/snyrYmYjpCbY-iWqPgjuWg/o.jpg
Do you think anyone goes in expecting to become involved for those sorts of class costs? No problem, put it on your credit card.
One thing you won't hear is the rate of success for those who have taken several courses.
If it was so easy to take a few "patented" courses, don't you think every trader would have the secret "patented" method.
That spending huge sums would give you the probability to make a "regular monthly cash flow or income" is absurd.
Naive listeners are being presented with a very slick sales force.
I seriously doubt whether many will ever make even enough to ever recover the thousands of dollars they spent on the classes and other "services".
Thurston says she was going to take the intro class, but has never said what the results of that "free" class were, or whether they followed up with a relentless sales pitch both during the class or afterwards as many note is the case.
Thurston needs to sever her "personal' relationship with that advertiser as soon as possible. Its one thing for the Cumulus corporation to carry such advertising, but quite another to lend your name and reputation to what they offer to listeners.

  11. Armstrong and Getty, whose balanced and objective discussion of events I admired, have become two fat slobs, groveling in the gutter for i guess patronage. I can't stand them anymore
Pat T. has a nasty I hate Republican obsession. she is SO predictable. . Rothman is huffy puffy pompous and intolerant of those who disagree, jumping on them in so insecure a manner as if only HE can tell us what to think. An amateur. That is how I heard him about year or so ago when I gave him another try. I wanted to like both Pat and John, for I rather like them as people, but they both pander to local PC. Neither comes close to Gene Burns, how I miss him, or Pete Wilson.
