I'M MARVELING at the Warriors Pre and Post-Game Shows on NBC Sports Bay Are and most specifically, Greg Papa, Garry St. Jean and Kelenna Azubuike.

I normally don't gravitate to studio shows on the sporting domain but since I'm watching Warriors' Playoffs contests, I've tried to make it a point to observe the commentators on the Dubs cable outlet.

Papa, who seems to be working on almost all Bay Area sports teams is especially good and does a nice job pacing the show and setting up St. Jean to provide quality analysis and offer specialized takes from former NBA/Warriors player, the surprisingly edgy and effective, Azubuike, who isn't afraid to dish it out and play softy when it comes to criticism; a lot of pro athletes are reluctant to rip their fellow players which seems ridiculous given that's their job on TV.

Papa is the perfect studio host because he knows NBA basketball and its nuances and did Warriors radio/TV broadcasts for years in the early dark days when the Warriors were horrible and now when they reign supreme.

Papa's NBC Sports BA studio time consists of up-to-the-minute pregame notes and info and analysis after the game. It was especially effective last (Thursday) night when he noted the Warriors' seemed to be hellbent on being aggressive early on to counter-attack Monday night's Game 2 disaster. Indeed, the Warriors came out in force in LA and copied Papa's prediction.

*This is an exciting time for Papa as he nears his first season broadcasting the 49ers as lead PBP guy on KNBR (replacing Ted Robinson) Papa also does a daily radio show on 95.7 FM 'The Game' so his time schedule is short and minimal --which, when you have five kids, makes life a complex maze of highways under construction.

Papa has begun his 49ers' position attending various workouts in Santa Clara at the 49ers' practice facility all the while maintaining his Warriors TV schedule and doing the radio show. It's a tough gig but Papa has the tenacity and wherewithal to accomplish each gig as effortlessly as possible.

  1. Greg Papa is a smarmy pompous ass. I'm going to be forced to listen to the national broadcasters on 49ers games this year.

And speaking of sports, is the Bay Area ever going to get an actual sports radio station? KNBR is a joke, with the endless song parodies, non-sports content (interview with JEREMY PIVEN the other day--seriously?), and ignoring anything in Bay Area sports if it isn't the Giants, Warriors, or 49ers. You'd never know the Bay Area had two teams in the playoffs, and that one of them had a big win last night to force a Game 6, by listening to the so-called Sports Leader.

  2. How Rod Brooks kept a job all these years is beyond belief no insights and poor speaking skills. They should get rid of him.

  3. I immediately change channel and station when I hear, see Papa. Obnoxious know it all.

It's curious Rich, your 180 on Papa; six months ago there were numerous posts asserting how disliked Papa is among his brethren.

  4. papa is a brilliant play by play guy, but as a radio host, he has been arrogant and a bully to his co host, now its bont hill who is a total joke in his own right.. also can't stand his son when come across him on the air sometimes who produces the radio show, with his moronic "skits" and lame drops and voices, totally unfunny

  5. I guess Rich's Papa-hate was focused on his work with the Raiders, and whatever that NBCSBA afternoon show was. Now, they're turning over a new leaf.

  6. The Warriors Postgame Show is a great way to cap off a Warriors win. Kelenna's hilarious imitation of Doc Rivers was priceless. My favorite part of the show is The Highlight Zone . . . Do do do do, do do do do . . . DOOOOOO!!!

  7. Papa radio show kind of sucks with the other guy, as he gets juvenille, his pregame and post game is great for the Warriors and he is also good on the morning show of the Game when the 3 stoodges ask his opionion on all sports. He also was a much better play by play then Fitzgerald with the Warrior Games. I know nothing will happen to the pillsbury dough boy until after the season but hope Warrior management replaces him with Ted Robinson, makes sense as they are moving to the Chase Center and time to get a much better play by play guy. I am sick of Fitzerald says the same darn thing , there is plenty of time left in the game as the clock hits the 7 minute mark or even two minute mark. Duh, like the average Warrior fan does not know that. Tired of keeping the sound down on Warrior games, time to replace Fitz, Mr. Lacob. Jim Barnett is still good over the years and I can learn from him, Fitz play by play is not bad, and he should stick with it and let the experts discuss the comentary of the games, as Fitz knows next to nothing that the average fan already knows.

    1. Fitz is low character. He basically stole Papa'a job with the Warriors, but there was no outcry from fans because
Papa is as big a jackass as Fitz. Haven't heard Kelenna enough to share an opinion, but St. Jean is Krukow-like in his homerism.
