Luckoff Christmas Party Behind The Scenes; KGO Radio Dinosaurs Owens, Baxter Among Guests at Mickey's Bore Fest; 'Costco' Food Horrible; Booze Did Flow Though

Left to Right: Mickey Luckoff, Ronn Owens and Ed Baxter
THERE THEY WERE; the three dinosaurs in the room. Mickey Luckoff, Ronn Owens and Ed Baxter; once great KGO Radio figures now in the afterthought mumbling and stumbling at Luckoff''s annual Christmas party the Saturday after Thanksgiving at the Mick's Marin home.

I wasn't at the latest gathering but I heard plenty from some of my inner spies at the cocktail enclave which became so tedious and uninviting several of the folks left early so they could order a pizza and actually eat real food. Supposedly, the cocktail party was long on drinks (good) and short on actual food (cheap finger food from Costco didn't cut it)

Big mouth Ronn Owens was muttering about the MIA status of Ray Taliaferro but it was all (as usual with Ronn) total fake and phony/ Owens' BS ness comes full frontal mode on Facebook.

Owens consistently yakked behind Ray's back and made for several of Ronn's unfunny jokes. When Ronn spoke glowingly of Ray --before and after this latest news of Taliaferro's disappearance, it was putdown central. Remember those people in your life that talk crap about you behind your back? That is Ronn Owens today and only I know it all too well.

Luckoff, the former KGO VP and GM, was his usual loathsome self; aa usual several people snubbed the party. Jack Swanson, onetime Mickey's good friend, didn't go. Hasn't been going for nearly a decade as his fallout with Luckoff remains as fraught and onerous as ever. Why? Luckoff was pissed off at Jack because he stayed on at the old KGO (before Cumulus) and that was met with eternal outrage by Mickster who took an affront to people who had to earn a living.

Ed Baxter showed up just to confirm reports that indeed, he was still ticking and had a pulse. Baxter, the former veteran KGO news anchor, is now working for Bloomberg Radio. Which proves there is death after life in radio.

  1. Yeah, I heard Baxter on Bloomberg Radio the other day. Poor Ed. Bloomberg radio reminds me of a 1970's era Chinese wind-up toy; that's about the quality it exudes. I find it hard to listen to the constant parade of changing voices and tinny jingles. But there was Ed, someone I actually recognize and like!

  2. Does anyone care about this? A blog post about a group of has beens telling each other lies about their past. KGO Radio died the day ABC sold it. It has gone through a slow death and it is not coming back. As the sainted Jack Swanson discovered, it would take a lot of time and two tons of money to resurrect what once was. Ownership these days (not just Cumulus) have neither the patience to wait nor the willingness to spend.

  4. Yep, 2:57 said it. When Disney gave up on most but not all radio, especially KABC LA and KGO San Francisco (Did they also sell WABC New York or is that still part of Disney?), that was it for terrestrial radio as far as consistent quality went.
It's a shame that Luckoff & Owens are such backstabbers. Can't believe Owens is still fit to be on radio if he is so messed up in more ways than one.

    1. Cumulus owns WABC; they had a 1.2 in the most recent ratings.

  5. Luckoff may be a hard person to work for, or even to like, but he dresses himself very nicely. He shows good taste and is in shape.

  6. 10:17 - Disney did sell WABC to Cumulus, which turned it into the trash fire that is KGO.
I was lucky (way beyond my talent) to have worked at the old KGO under Jack and Mickey, and attended some of their beautiful holiday parties. Beautiful...and wild, too! If only I could reveal...but some of those people know where I live...
