To attract men who have small penises, I guess. But the thing is, it's a radio show. NOT television. And Ms. Laughlin, who is pretty and supposedly knows sports, is unable to talk over the other male voices which is counterproductive. So what I've heard of BJL is very little and I don't think I'm alone.
Locally, the 49ers, even in down years like this one although the Raiders, even as terrible as they are, are more of a national brand. So too the Niners but to a lesser extent.
Yes, probably a third-tier cable network for now but she's still got a name and still has some appeal. Plus she has enough money so her next stop won't be limited by financial demands. She has no leverage now so she'll probably take some time off and be prepared for the new year when she'll be back on TV, my prediction.
I don't think that she will be back anytime soon. In addition to the blackface comment she stated that Santa Claus was "white". Santa is a fictitious character. What law school did she attend?
He was telling his friends on-line that he'd be back on; yes. Only that was probably contingent on Jack Swanson getting the PD gig only now Jack quit because Cumulus has no money and Copeland is probably back on the back burner. Some day? Perhaps.
Rich - Didn't know you were a fellow Skyline Titan. Your story of being a junior and running to the payphone (no cell phones) to confirm the Moscone shooting echoed my own. I was at Skyline in '86 when the space shuttle exploded and ran to (probably the same) payphone to call home for confirmation and details.
Wow, 1:38 same year as the Glove Gary Payton! At Washington-Fremont the same year, I found out about the explosion at the old Pit gym through the softball coach. Eventually, I went into the library and Brokaw, Jennings, & Rather were already on the air, and Reagan made his first statement. Tough day nationally.
Hi Rich: Back in early September KGO 7 announced they would be hiring Fresno TV sportscaster Chris Alvarez as their weekend sports anchor/reporter replacing Mike Shumann. You also posted the same thing. I saw Alvarez do one weekend stint on KGO 7 & that was it. He's back in Fresno. I checked both his Twitter & Facebook Accounts & he's back working as a TV sports anchor/reporter in Fresno. What Happened? Did Alvarez just quit after 1 weekend or did KGO 7 let him go? I've been seeing Mindi Bach regularly anchor KGO sports desk this fall. Is she now permanent or is KGO 7 still in the market for a weekend sports anchor. Keep up the great work Rich. Cary from SF
Yes I did report that item about Alvarez; it's a mystery I'm working on --this is how weird that is, Cary. Even people at KGO are mystified over all this.
If Cumulus hired you to make KGO relevant again, and gave you a decent budget to work with, what would you do and who would you hire? Thanks! Steve in Santa Rosa
Hey Steve, well first off, Cumulus would never hire me but thanks for the question.
I'm not an expert obviously but I've listened to enough radio to have an understanding as to what is enjoyable and relevant --even if you're bored and tired of politics the numbers are in and people are interested in politics and news-talk. So first off, I would emphasize the news. Look at the midterms --people turned out in record numbers and that shows that the public cares. God knows with Trump in the WH and all the drama we obviously care about the future (or lack thereof) of the country.
As to who I would hire, I obviously like John Rothmann a lot; Pat Thurston is much better then she used to be. I'm a Christine Craft fan just wish she'd be a little more gracious but she's good.
I'd hire Matt Rey, the guy out of Sacto and I really like Stacy the KSDO and KGO vet. I'll have to think about the rest.
Do you think the bay area will ever get another radio station like the old KGO? Any talk show would be good on any station. I would even be happy with some new voices on the radio. Just so we can get the bay area callers back on the radio with all their different opinions. I sure miss that old style talk radio.
Have a great Thanksgiving. And thank you for your blog.
Oh, I almost forgot. Stan Bunger yesterday morning was doing the every 10 minute weather report and was talking about another day of smoke in the bay area and his reply was "Deal With It" my oh my.
The "old" KGO? Never. Not in the cards because in today's world, not enough good thinkers nor ingenuity and different ratings system. Different radio period --not to say it couldn't happen in a different format but since radio today is run by a bunch of nincompoops, highly unlikely.
Bunger's weather mantra irritates the heck out of me (as I have written and you obviously agree) but when you reach a certain age and level, you think you're a god. Stan is in that frame. Is it deplorable? No, just a nuisance.
I also wonder about Natasha Z. and do miss seeing her on a.m. news. -copycat injury (concussion) with Veronica DLC. -from zero to very little info on social media. -if going to a new employer, employer may need to be concerned with hiring someone with an existing serious medical issue, only to have someone on (permanent) disability.
KPIX should fired Veronica when her contract is up. Very unprofessional and don't even know why KPIX sign her up at first when they already got info about her background and complicated personal life as expressed on many websites. Her smurky expression and eyes is what I dislike seeing her. Liz Cook can just take over all her segment or just promote the weekend anchor to fill up her spot.
Very happy Natasha is gone, but not too sure still seeing those ads on her on TV.
I know I asked this on here before, and I'm not sure if Damon mentioned this, and if he did I must've missed it but, Rich, do you or anyone else know why Damon Bruce was taken off Warriors pre-game on 95.7?
With that being said, I like Guru and I'm happy for Guru. He's finally getting his shot on 95.7, with the 10-Noon show with Steinmetz and Warriors pre-and-postgame on 95.7. This is a big opportunity for him. He has a good rapport with Steinmetz even though they sometimes have their battles/beefs/disagreements on their weekday show from 10-Noon, but it was kind of odd how they fazed out/took Damon and former Santa Clara head coach Kerry Keating off the pregame show last year. They were pretty good, and for Kerry Keating, even though he was a college coach and failed at Santa Clara, he could give you basketball analysis from a coaching/head coaching perspective which was kind of cool from time to time. Kind of gave you insight on how basketball coaches tick/think.
I'm guessing part of the reason why 95.7 took Damon off Warrior pregame might've been because they couldn't setup Damon and Gianna to do Damon's show from Oracle for Warrior home games. It seemed like that was a problem a lot last year. Also, I noticed Damon stopped doing Warriors pregame on 95.7 for weekend Warriors games during the regular season last year. Just from listening to his show, it sounds like Damon is busy with his wife sometimes on weekends, as far as events she has to attend and other commitments, and Damon is there to be alongside. I also wonder if him having a stroke last year had something to do with it as well. They probably wanted to lessen his workload I would assume and not have his as stressed out.
I guess for Guru and Steinmetz, since they're only on from 10-Noon, they have plenty of time to get ready and get setup for Warrior pregame, especially for Warriors home games. Also, Steinmetz used to cover the Warriors, so maybe that was also a factor, and it might be easier for them to make it out to Oracle, since I don't think they don't live in SF.
But yes, I was wondering why they took Damon and Kerry Keating off Warriors pregame, even though Guru and Steinmetz aren't bad replacements.
I would assume that Damon is too honest for the Warriors and that OK on both sides. The Warriors are GOD and have the right to promote their commercial without any criticism. And Damon is to be commended for seeking out the truth and not act like a PR bumpkin like Bob Fitzgerald (aka: Rudy and Flunkster Dude)
God I miss Van Amburg, Jerry Jensen, Kate Kelly " The Grace Kelly" of anchors and others. The sorry ass state of Bay Area anchors and adolescent reporters make me want to vomit. Dan Ashley, Kristen Tze make a good team. Juliette Goodrich, why she has not been snapped up by the networks boggles the mind.
Penny wise and pound foolish in today's media market tells a disturbing story. Our country has been dumbed-down to the point of accepting this garbage.
There is no pride and or work ethic anymore. The few stated are Unicorns. What is the solution?
Darya Folsom is the poster child of incompetence...Guess it helps if you are screwing the boss right? This woman is a waste of space.
There is no solution. There is an acknowledgment that the days of compelling radio, good-to-great-movies, non-smart phone crappola is now the major domain of our culture and our news. We have been kidnapped by a technology that has no taste but we humans can reject some of its tenets --instead we seem to have embraced it. That's the facts, unfortunately.
Have you noticed Robin Winston filling in for Darya Folsom on Kron 4 this week? I don't want to give Robin a bigger head than she already reportedly has, but making this change permanent would be a significant upgrade! Do you think it will ever happen in our lifetime?
Uh, I think there's far more important matters to go over as opposed to slightly pretty traffic anchors filling in for over-exposed, fake personalities that are in bed with the news director (literally) but thanks for asking. Are you a KRON intern? Never mind.
They don't let her talk...except for Tolbert she has more basketball knowledge than anyone at that station...she was a scout for the Lakers. Why hire her for one sentence an hour?
I would like to know what is holding up any major changes that the most effected stations are considering, even if it's simply contract squabbles and disagreements with Network HQs.
I listened a bit to the Raiders pre-game show last Sunday on 95.7. Coming from an East Bay Hooters, of all places. Mychael Urban (who is on a lot again, and fumbles with words) and Jim Kozimor hosted. Innocuous and boring enough. I prefer Rick Tittle, but to each his own. I was about to turn it off, boring talk. Then Kozimor get's political. A few right wing rants, not sport takes. Urban retorts, trying some reason and a different view. And Koz starts to attack him verbally. Get's angry. Sounds really bad. Urban tries to diffuse. Kozimor won't stop until probably someone told him to quit it. Then on to more innocuous Raiders talk. Kozimor sound like a boor and really should be reprimanded. An obvious Trumpster. BUT made for interesting radio, I stayed tuned in. Raiders talk continued, I switched off. You hear about this Rich, even though 95.7 is off your radar?
I like Ally Rasmus as anchor on KTVU, really don't like 'plastic barbie' Heather Holmes and Claudine Wong doesn't enunciate. She sounds like she's gritting her teeth when she talks.
On the KPIX early morning news, Michelle Griego just said that weathergirl Mary Lee was a guest for Thanksgiving dinner at Griego's house. That's a nice thing welcoming gesture toward a new person at work, not at all what's expected from the kind of jealous witch who tries to sabotage her co-workers according to Lieberman. What did Griego do to deserve the nasty rep she's got on this site?
Oh, crap. More about sports radio. Enough, sports radio has been the same forever and is OK by me listening to a game.
Better to talk about getting the morons like Bearman and Franklin off and bring in new talent. I don't care if they're liberal or conservative but please, no more actors in these radio spaces.
Franklin was conservative on his show in San Diego, and Bearman (who is in LA) was conservative when filling in on KSFO. They are both fakes and no one seems to notice or care!! What's the matter with you all?
Oh, I get it, it's the bay area. No intelligence or critical thinking, just sheep...
Rick from Hayward CA, asks: Hi Rich, I was wondering your thoughts on the Oakland A's Leaving Entercom and 95.7/1550. Many people think the A's will buy there own station or go with Cumulus 1050? I can't see the Giants being ok with Cumulus and the A's partnering on KNBR's clone station. What do you see the A's doing about there next Radio station and do you think it might buy A station or going with Clear Channel/I-heart media?
One more question. Rich, not sure if you watch the Happy Hour, but have you noticed that Greg Papa and Ray Ratto aren't really on the show anymore?
I remember last year when you did articles about how Papa, Kelli Johnson, and Ratto didn't really like each other, and they even joked about it on the show at times, when you can kind of somewhat tell that maybe there probably was something there between the three of them at the time. Papa and Johnson not being on the show for periods of time, and Ratto missing time here and there. They never had that consistent mix to where that show could've went somewhere. They all had other stuff they had to do.
It seems like the past few months or so, they've kind of rebranded the show and switched to having just two hosts on the show, and they are kind of giving some of their other staff a chance to host the show like Laura Britt, Ahmed Fareed, Dave Feldman, the Warriors outsider Grant Liffman. Kelli Johnson usually hosts when one of them is hosting the show. Greg Papa is rarely on the show now, even though part of that might be because he's doing 49ers and Warriors pre and post, and calling some college football games. He still does his radio show on 95.7, and you can tell he puts more energy into that then he does Happy Hour whenever he's on. On Happy Hour, he usually makes the same points he made a few hours earlier on 95.7. LOL. It's like hey wait a minute, I heard him make this same point earlier today. LOL.
It looks like they moved Ratto to covering the games now, and and reporting from there during Happy Hour, as opposed to doing the show full-time. In a way that might be best as his style doesn't really fit a show like this. Too negative, and as a lot of people have mentioned in the past, his schtick can get old. At times it's awkward and funny, but it can get tired.
But yes, have you noticed that Greg Papa and Ray Ratto are rarely on Happy Hour now?.... It really will be interesting to see how this show gets marketed during Giants and A's telecasts next year in between innings.
The morning show on knbr has added Bonnie Jill. Why?
ReplyDeleteTo attract men who have small penises, I guess.

Typical, Ernie and Bert are worried about talent that makes less and will replace them. What happened to Tynika? A soothing voice.
DeleteWhich team receives the better TV ratings? The San Francisco 49ers or the Oakland Raiders.
ReplyDeleteLocally, the 49ers, even in down years like this one although the Raiders, even as terrible as they are, are more of a national brand. So too the Niners but to a lesser extent.

ReplyDeleteYes, probably a third-tier cable network for now but she's still got a name and still has some appeal. Plus she has enough money so her next stop won't be limited by financial demands. She has no leverage now so she'll probably take some time off and be prepared for the new year when she'll be back on TV, my prediction.
DeleteI am not so sure that she will be back BIG TIME. Rating for the third hour of the Today Show has gone up since Mrs. Kelly left.
DeleteShe's about to get a $30M settlement from NBC I don't think she really cares. 30 MILL is BIG TIME enough.
DeleteI don't think that she will be back anytime soon. In addition to the blackface comment she stated that Santa Claus was "white". Santa is a fictitious character. What law school did she attend?

Kpix had a few young ladies doing the weather afer Neda left. They were fine, I thought. Why go out and get Mary Lee??? What I'm I missimg?
ReplyDeleteYou're missing the 21st century reality called PC hiring and demo charts.
DeleteOf course, even at that, KPIX in the morning is a massive failure. They don't appear to get it.
Mary Lee works cheap too.

DeleteWhere did Veronica Cruz go, she came back and MIA this week?
ReplyDeleteVeronica, I assume has some time off and is probably headed to parts unknown for the holiday.
DeleteThat said, yeah, she has issues. We all do.
Veronica DLC's social media indicates a probable bereavement-leave situation. My sympathies and it seems as if she's had a difficult year.

She's headed for LA; mutual OK; I don't think KGO cares at this point and contract situation is worked out--on both sides.
