WAS IT REALLY FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY?
Well yes, the actual plane crash, but even tragedy took a back seat to this.
And later on, this, which I broke here first.
It became the greatest fodder in TV News history. It was inescapable and made for spoofs all over the network TV and cable hemisphere --much to the chagrin of KTVU and its place in Bay Area and national news circles. All over the country it was Topic A; for KTVU all the wrong reasons.
Even international.
To this day, I cannot fathom how it all made the air. You'd have to choreograph a perfect crime and even at that, you would almost have to have magical powers to pull it all off. Andyou would fail and fall flat on your face. Of course you would, right?

Keep in mind the actual Asiana crash took place six days earlier. The first images looked rather disturbing. As it turned out, it wasn't as bad as portrayed. Unless you were this young lady.
Or, maybe Tori Campbell.
The questions remain: how could she not have been curious?
Should she have named the names out loud?
What was she smoking?
Nobody knows for sure.

LOL!!! My god, that was funny!!!
ReplyDeleteThis was such a bogus story to begin with, so the KTVU marketers could trumpet "we've just learned the names of the pilots!"
ReplyDeleteDoes the average viewer in the Bay Area even know...or care about...the disembodied names of 4 obscure foreign pilots with zero context or other information? But, hey, KTVU, you got 'em first!
And, 2 years later, Tori is gone for good replaced by lovely Gasia.
ReplyDeleteReally? You think that's an upgrade?
DeleteYeah, my thoughts...
DeleteWhat I remember about The Tori Disaster more than anything else is Frank Somerville's heartfelt and very desperate apology that evening. He was sincerely doing everything in his power to save Tori's job, and if he'd succeeded she would have owed him a helluva Christmas present every year for the rest of her life. However, although she got a temporary stay of execution, even Frank couldn't keep KTVU management from jettisoning her as soon as they reasonably could while making it look amicable, as the suits always do.
ReplyDeleteHo Li Fook, that was FIVE years ago???
ReplyDeleteTime really flies...unlike those pilots. :-) BANG! DING! OW!
Tim Montemayor was on KGO, he was if possible even more annoying than Ethan Bearman, although he did not do a "lifestyle" show, which I guess Bearman is not doing anymore. In that case I have to say Montemayor was worse than Bearman, at least Ethan is bright, Montemayor was an intellectual lightweight. So with interactive talk is coming back and KGO gets a decent line up, it might actually be okay, not like it was when Gene Burns, Pete Wilson and others were on, but compared to the last few years it might amount to something.
ReplyDeleteIs that video available anywhere?? Or is it blocked. I have never laughed that hard in my life.
ReplyDeleteIt was another example of "let's be first" rather than "let's be sure". The writer, the exec. producer and the show producer read all copy before it goes on the air. The poor announcer gets the first look when she's almost live, sometimes a few seconds before air. It was a tragic case of all those people ignoring the first rule of writing copy for air, "read it", "read it many times". If these employees had done that it wouldn't have gone on the air. The manic push to "be first" instead of "be right" will leave KTVU with a stain that will never go away.
ReplyDeletewell KTVU IS pronounced...Kit Vu! ''oh, that's my stylist, isn't she cute?!''.
ReplyDeleteThe Damon Bruce show that day was EPIC! All he did was lay into the idiots at KTVU being duped by this.
ReplyDeleteThis was EPIC! I don't know how this got on air.
ReplyDeleteMy lovely wife and I were talking about it the other night, she laughed so hard at the pilots names her nose bleed.
yes, KNBR had KT Scott , KTVU has KT Vu!. Gotta keep up with the Katies.
ReplyDeleteseriously , you were wondering if anyone had a name like ''Sergio kawakami'' believe it or not , there iS! Unbelieveable.
ReplyDeleteThe video still lives on YouTube.

The worst part of the "Breaking News" we know the name of the pilots that Friday is that earlier on Tuesday the SF Chronicle had two of the names.. so, this bs of breaking news is so bogus... would love to find the consultant that came up with it since it is some pervasive and tell him what havoc he wrought to news credibility...
