KGO would love to get Vern Glenn from KPIX for its vacant weekend sports gig but it seems money is an issue. It always is.

Glenn is not happy at PIX --nothing personal but he's tired of the relentless work and average compensation. He'd love to go to Channel 7 for a variety of reasons; one, although he'd be second fiddle there's a better then decent chance he could eventually be #1 because either Larry Beil is going back to Hawaii or will stay and switch to news fulltime thereby paving the way for Glenn to become the new fulltime sports anchor. It's all speculation now but there should be a development before the fall.

Meanwhile, Mindi Bach seems to be the frontrunner for the job; as much as I like her presence, Bach often stumbles on her copy and is a terrible ad-libber. She needs to practice more but ABC might be in a rush.

Rick Quan too is in the running but is probably not on a short list.

*YES, I too can't stand the weekend sports on KCBS --especially on the early morning newscasts when it's repeat after repeat and mostly useless information. If you're looking for a score, you can easily turn to the Internet and get it. KCBS' weekend format is god-awful unless there's a breaking news story.

  1. Mindi isn't as smooth as she used to be. Don't know if it's lack of practice or what, but she, as you say, stumbles, makes some boner mispronunciations (when my wife, who doesn't even follow sports, howls, you know it's bad) and just doesn't look in command in the chair. Too bad. She used to be better.

    1. Boner mispronunciations are the worst!

    2. When someone's ability to read starts going downhill, a logical place to look (excuse the pun) is their vision. Either Mindy needs to have her eyes checked and her contact lens prescription adjusted, or perhaps there's some issue with the studio lighting. (KGO's set definitely seems more brightly lit than the old CSNBA set, and maybe that's her problem.) I don't peg her as an airhead, so if she's developed a problem since changing jobs, evaluate the environment.

    3. It's called getting along with the Dubs. Even boner mispronunciations can't compete with our hoop dynasty.

  2. If he leaves PIX, I wouldn't miss Vern. IMO, Andrea Nakano is much better.

    1. Rick is much more polished. And Mindy is not exactly Playboy bunny material.

That's why you watch sports news on TV; to see an attractive female? What decade are you living in?

    3. @840P Are U kidding? That is why Fox has Chrissa Thompson and Erin Andrews (and other hot woman)!

  4. ABC is not in a rush. Every day they don't sign a full-time employee, they're saving money. There is no rush.

  5. Andrea is worse than Mindy, Mindy does a great welcoming job. Rick should go to KRON.

  6. Quan and Nakano are definitely way better than Bach. Mindi comes off like a reporter reading the sports; she doesn't seem to be engaged like the other two are. Also, won't miss Glenn if he moves to another station.

  7. Rich,
How come our local and national tv here in Bay Area, is not covering
the Thailand story as leading story or top news bits of the day

I check cnn, Fox News, msnbc. the coverage is very little, nothing live
    poor coverage

its 10pm, Saturday 7-7-18, nothing live on tv no updates, I have 250 cable channels on crappy Comcast, nothing new, nothing live,

should this story be a bigger story here in USA

  8. Rick Quan - the consummate team player - hope he gets a full time gig (well if he wants one, which is another question)

Which means he's f*cked. That's how it is in the biz.

  9. The ongoing cuts at Audacy have resulted in two sports stations dropping local programming in favor of a network feed.

“1250 The Fan” WSSP Milwaukee has wiped out all local shows, resulting in 12 staffers losing their jobs. Included in the layoffs are morning host Bart Winkler, midday hosts Gary Ellerson, LeRoy Butler, Steve ‘Sparky’ Fifer, and evening host Tim Allen, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

“Some unfortunate news, today is my last day at 1250 AM The Fan… Well, I guess it’s actually everyone’s,” producer Evan Heffelinger posted on Twitter. “It was a dream come true to talk Wisconsin sports with you the last five years.”

WSSP, one of three sports stations in the market, had carried local programming since 2005 and was previously simulcast on the Milwaukee-licensed translator W289CB at 105.7 until October 2020, when the signal became the home of hip-hop/R&B “Hot 105.7” with programming originating on WXSS-HD2.

WSSP is now carrying the full lineup from CBS Sports Radio.

Meanwhile in Las Vegas, “The Playmakers” afternoon show hosted by Lindsey Brown and Adrian Hernandez on “1140 The Bet” KXST has been discontinued.

“Sadly, I have been informed that yesterday was our final show,” Brown posted on Twitter. “I am thankful for the people it brought into my life and the experiences we created. I am incredibly proud of our work and the boundaries we are eager to push in sports radio. Today is a tough day. Tomorrow is on the way.”

The program was the only local show on the station, which was converted to “The Bet” in June 2021 with a focus on sports-wagering shows and content from Audacy’s BetQL Network. Afternoons will now air the network’s flagship show “You Better You Bet.”

The Audacy cuts, which will result in a reduction of less than 5% of the company’s workforce, also triggered job losses at many of the company’s stations across the country.

Exiting are Dave O’ Brien, morning host at classic rock “99.5 The Mountain” KQMT Denver; Kevin Battle, morning co-host at news/talk KDKA Pittsburgh (1020); Kristen Buccigrossi, morning co-host at country “Y108” WDSY Pittsburgh; John Fisher, morning host at soft AC “94.1 The Sound” KSWD; John Zenor, who served as Public Affairs Director at talk KJCE (1370) and weekend host at AC “Majic 95.5” KKMJ Austin; Lance Hildebrand, traffic reporter at hot AC “Y98” St. Louis; and Stel Pontikes, PD of Christian “The Spirit 102.5” KEZK-HD3 St. Louis.
