Matt Hurwitz OUT as Dubs' PA announcer at Oracle Arena

Matt Hurwitz, the NBA champion, Warriors' PA announcer for over 18years is OUT, 415 MEDIA has learned through a source.

I reached out to Hurwitz who confirmed to me that he was indeed no longer with the team and not returning for the upcoming season.

"They (Warriors) indicated they wanted to go in a new direction. While I'm disappointed I had a great time --a great run for almost two decades," Hurwitz told me.

There's no word on a replacement as of this writing.

The Warriors are scheduled to move into their new San Francisco arena, the Chase Center, for the 2019-2020 season.

  1. Did Fitz stab him in the back, too?

  2. Expect the Warriors to hire a loud, over the top, FM disc-jockey to be the new PA announcer.
Similar to what the Giants employ.

    1. Wonder if it's going to be the same person that the Giants' employ?

Roberta is a Warriors fan, and I believe that she used to be a disc-jockey.

    3. I was thinking this. Here comes the PC pandering hire, most likely an ethnic woman, in 3..2..1..

  4. Too bad he's out of work...but I can't stand the 'shtick' used by him and pretty much all NBA public-addres guys since the 1980s-90s era of Ray Clay from 'YOUR...CHIIIIIIII-CAHHHHGOOOOOO BUUUUUUULLLLLS.'
Hurwitz overdid it so much, it often sounded like he was having a hard time in the bathroom, if you gt my drift...

  7. I remember when A's PA voice (and still-trying-to-succeed Roy Steele) Dick Callahan was the Warriors PA voice. Like now, always did understated, except for the "shooting....two". Other than Callahan & Hurwitz, I haven't kept track of Warriors' PA history.
After the Coliseum's Voice of God Steele (covered all three Oakland teams at one time or another), the one NBA PA voice I remember most is the late great Dave Zinkoff of the classic Philadelphia Spectrum and his signature call, "Number 6, The Doctor, Julius Errrrrving!"
415 Media readers, other than the Oakland voices plus Renel at AT&T Park (and before that, Sherry Davis), please refresh my mind regarding our Bay PA history plus others all over the country (way back when, Sherm Feller at Fenway Park and Bob Sheppard at Yankee Stadium I plus the aforementioned Clay thanks to Air Jordan; also can't forget Lawrence Tanter of the Lakers at both the Inglewood Forum and now at LA's Staples Center).

    1. Jeff Carter was the PA at Candlestick Park. He also sung the National Anthem.

    2. Hope this helps, 9:33. Or at least brings back some memories!

Bud Kelly and Joe Ike were PA Announcers for the Sharks. Kelly also worked the NHL Exhibition games at the Coliseum Arena in the late '80s and 1990.

I believe that Ralph Nelson did some PA work for the Giants. Nelson was also a right-hand man for Bob Lurie in their Front Office. Jeffery Bonds was the Carnival Barker-type PA guy for the Giants in the late '80s and very early '90s. Jeff Bonds evidently got into some personal trouble, and the Giants let him go.

In LA, there was the legendary John Ramsey. For decades, Ramsey worked multiple venues down there. Dodger Baseball; Laker Basketball; SC Football and Basketball, and I believe he even worked some Raider, Charger, and UCLA Football for periods. Nick Nickson, the longtime LA Kings announcer, also served as Dodger Stadium for quite a few years.

    3. Another name (that I forgot to mention) is Bob Sarlatte, the comedian who worked the Niner games for many years. I seem to recall that Sarlatte also did some PA for the Warriors as well.

  8. Don't the Warriors use him as a traditional PA guy and also use a "hype man" to get fans fired up?
I hate the over the top PA people. Mumbling the the visitor line-up then having a stroke while introducing the home team. I really hope the W's aren't going to do something stupid - the team doesn't need fake noise to get things going.

    1. Yes, that is correct. Franco Finn is the hype man who announces the Warriors' starters.

  9. Remember Jeff Carter at Candlestick Park. He also sang the National Anthem and possibly Oh Canada. He was the best

  11. Wonder if they are going to change the TV Broadcast team? Barnett is good, Fitz is OK, Papa is Better.

  12. I grew up in San Diego during the 70's..moving to SF in the mid-80's. DUring the 70's, the Pardes had a truly awful Shorstop, Enzo Hernandez (he'd barely hit .200...and I believe he only had 1 career HR.

He wore #11. The Padres PA announcer...John DeMott...would always introduce him like this: "Now batting...the shortstop...NumberelevenENZOOOooooooo....air-NAHN-dezzzzz! Us Padres fans loved how he'd roll together his number and first name as one continuous word.

  13. I'm a bit late to comment on this but really wanted to say something....seems weird that they would make a change for no apparent reason after all these years. Perhaps the fans can voice their displeasure to the team in some way and let ownership or Rick Welts know this isn't cool? They already tried pulling this crap before with Jim Barnett a few years ago.
