Sure, the wily veteran and showman was going to leave any day now; in fact it's been rumored for months and clearly, Radnich, still at the top of his game had dragged a bit at the end and when Nexstar made it clear to everyone at KRON that even the big stars were going to have their pay program slashed, Radnich decided it was time to go but it wasn't all about money. Far from it.
The combination of a six-show at night schedule combined with his weekly sports-radio show on KNBR was already taking its toll on Radnich's family (he has three kids from current wife, Alecia and three grown kids from his first wife, Donna) --the physical and mental work was already a behemouth. Something had to give and it was TV that was the designated eraser.
Gary Radnich |
We've had our differences. Major differences. Combustible?, you betcha. I called him out and thought at times he was mailing it in which in some cases he was but overall --in nearly 40 years of work in radio and TV in the nation's 4th largest market (for radio) and 8th (for TV) he had to do something right.
I know you're shocked but it needs to be said. Even, yes, from me.
'
So, I congratulate the King and wish him well down the road. It's the right thing to do because anything else would be cranky at this point and I'm not going there, yet.
I bet you can't go cold turkey off Raddy.
ReplyDeletedare ya?
Radnich was best at big interviews guys liked De Bartolo would open up to him.You really got insight into big personalities. Say what you want guy worked hard.
ReplyDeleteI'll miss seeing Gary on KRON.
ReplyDeleteSo many people wax poetic on here about the "way things were" and the "unique personalities" that we used to have in the Bay Area on radio and television. Some of those same people are here talking trash now that we are losing one of the last "unique personalities" that they oh so long for. Kind of ridiculous.
He was popular. He drew eyeballs. He has loyal viewers and fans. It's the end of an era in alot of ways. I wish him the best. Thanks for the memories, Gare.
Same here - he's a living legend. Really understood the medium and enjoyed it. I'm not a sports guy but liked him because he could kid around, and mock some of the absurd things all TV stations do.
DeleteMy favorite were his moments of reverence for unique journeyman but quality people on his team - like 'the great Evan White' or his references to Karl Sonkin. There was a bit where he covered Lloyd Patterson coaching his son's basketball game.
What I also want to know - what is Tom Nettles up to these days? What does he think of Radnich.
"he has three kids from current wife, Alecia and two grown kids from his first wife, Donna"
ReplyDeleteOn the radio this morning with Larry someone mentioned that he had 6 kids?
They must be referring to Vern Glen.
ReplyDelete"Still at the top of his game". "Lost a lot of his luster".
ReplyDeleteWhich is it, Rich?
Gary's got his retirement ass backwards. He's tolerable on a KRON two minute sports report but completely intolerable in 30 seconds of Talk Radio..

DeleteThe laziest sportscaster in bay area history.he gave very little actual sports scores.he made it about him,and i think people were just too lazy to turn the channel.he felt he was too big to cover a story, but when the super bowl was here a few years ago,he was running around trying to rub shoulders with national media and falling on his face.sports anchors passed him by decades ago,i stopped listening to knbr because of him and marty lurie.sadly, the big joke was on him for never seeing how phony he had become.
ReplyDeleteHi Stan.
DeleteNever attended anything. "I've got a family," was his excuse. I guess the sports directors of all the other stations don't.
DeleteAnd he always looked like he'd just come from Houlihan's tavern with his puffy red face and body that bulging out of his bought-when-he-was-30-pounds-lighter suit. And he'd stare openly at Maureen Kelly whenever she wore a short skirt. Pig.
At onetime, possibly even now, Gary's 6:45 p.m. sports report had higher ratings than the other stations combined.
ReplyDeleteI will miss his ad-lib style.
Will miss Gary. Didn't take sports or himself too seriously. Knows what's important in life.
DeleteNow that Gary Radnich has been forced out at KRON time to bring in Mike Shuman.
ReplyDeleteHe is better prepared.
Nice classy move Rich...even tho you had your differences with him...you made a nice classy move by praising him for his hard work on Bay Area TV and radio...
ReplyDeleteFor years I liked Gary R, but I got older and wiser. I got bored of his aw-shucks dialog. It was like a bad comedy routine every night.
ReplyDeleteSomewhere Catherine Heenan has a huge smile on her face and a spring in her step.
ReplyDeletePrune juice will do that to you.
DeleteShould have been fired years ago. If KRON had any backbone. He has been mailing it in for years, at least 10 years or more. Good bye.
ReplyDeleteStopped listening to Radnich after hearing "lived a little" too many times....Ten years later, switched on the radio, within 3 minutes, "lived a little".....Raddy in a nutshell, sad...
ReplyDeleteSure kid sure.
DeleteIt should be interesting to see how Gary does on KNBR after Sept. 1st. I like Gary, but I feel that he mails it in on a regular bases. You Listen to Larry and he "brings it" every day. He prepares for the program. Gary just seems to "bring himself" if you will. Now that he only has one commitment, he should come better prepared. If not, he's finished.
ReplyDeleteradnich interviewing somebody , he said ''I'm glad you have a family!''...
