For Randich's first 12-15 years or so, I was a big fan, especially of the 'Sit Down!' specials. And when KNBR went all-sports(well, just about, since they held onto Rush Limbaugh's show for years), Radnich had a good, brisk, two-hour show, between Rush and Pete Franklin. Things sort of 'Jumped the Shark' after Radnich was moved into morning drive, around 1999/2000.That was when he started taking all of his 'bits' seriously, and it carried over to the TV side. He should have moved on from KRON at the end of the NBC era.
A directly-related dislike is/was how GR was linked to the KRON morning news to talk to Darya Folsom, but only via audio/telephone. Huh? This is TV, not radio. I just believe KRON could have set-up some type of video-link if it was too inconvenient to go into the studio. I understand a morning appearance and a later evening appearance would make for a long day, but video should be possible for KRON to set-up for a daily broadcast from a person's home.
Need more clarification about the Bentley's future. Had KRON's ownership finally had enough? Does Ken Wayne now have surprising sway which includes a disdain for the Bentley? Does KRON want Shu? If true from KRON, what about the Knibber?
I always enjoyed him - smart, witty, self-deprecating. He doesn't looooove sports - which is why he's enjoyable. His is the only show I listen to on KNBR too - then I switch back to KQED. I've come across him in real life a few times (SF is a small town) - and he is exactly how he is on air - he's absolutely genuine.
Wow, I'm still kind of shocked that Radnich is going to retire from KRON. Yeah, you can make a case he needed to go, but the finality of it actually happening a little later this year, makes you really look back at his career like Rich did in his other post about Radnich.
Even though he wasn't for everybody, and even though his best days are behind, you do have to tip your cap to Gary on his career at KRON.
I liked him for a very long time. He may have gotten to be an ------ per that Catherine Heenan thing, and what it might have been like working with him I don't know, but he was in the select group of Bay Area news personalities that withstood the test of time and was a now-rare entity -- someone who everybody recognized. I don't think any highly-paid and well-known anchor ever leaves such a position voluntarily.
Only reason I would flip back and forth on occasion was to see Gary or his wife, otherwise he is KRON, just wait . Enjoy your well deserved retirement!
This is Shu's big break.

There is no other story to his departure.
