  1. What's the latest on John Madden and his health?

    1. Madden is living his life after some heart issues about as well as can be expected...but looks like his "daily Madden" conversations are done. No official announcement has been made but the last time the coach was on the air was Thanksgiving, 2015.

    2. John Madden is deeply saddened by the Raiders toying with the idea to move to Vegas.

  2. Hey Rich. Could you settle a question that has been bugging me. Where does the Earache BEAR-man broadcast from. Some have said he's in SoCal but he acts like he lives here in the Bay Area. If he is in SoCal, he's a bigger ass than I already think he is. I figure you could settle this once and for all.

    Thanks.

    1. Southern Cal which is "live and local" don't you know? Settled once and for all.

    2. Barelyeman supposedly went to "law school" in socal. KSCO had some going away thing for that duffus. Even the extreme right wingers at ksco hate his guts now after he appeared on cnn criticizing Trump

  3. One of your readers recently posted some pictures from George Watson's 60th birthday party. Leslie Griffith was in attendance and was still as beautiful as she was all those years ago on the air. What was the reason for her leaving the airwaves? It seems like it's been years since she has been around.

    1. Leslie Griffith --as talented a TV journalist /anchor as their is, had some personal and professional issues off the air. She was extremely adamant about professional ethics which often found her at odds with some of her co-workers. She was also, some say, hard to work with which is often the case with artists who insist on top performance. I'll leave it at that.

    2. Cox broadcasting and the scumbags who run the Ringling Brothers Circus made LG's life miserable. If anyone out there believes the press / media is liberal, you are truly ignorant. Cox told LG to stop with truthful reporting on the Circus' treatment of animals since it hurt the CMG's bottom line. Nuff said.

    3. Leslie Griffith was one of my favorite KTVU reporters. I read an article back then and it was something between her and the station (manager) who declined to back her up. She got upset and left the station and Julie took over her spot.

    4. Leslie had a fling with the long time sports guy on Channel 2.

That station manager was Andrew Finlayson. He was an is an asshat of the highest caliber. The day Fred Zehnder announced he was retiring and turning the station over to Finlayson, every eye in the newsroom was downcast and everyone was depressed. As one editor whispered to another after that meeting, which I attended, "We're fucked now."

It didn't take pleat-boy long to destroy Fred's three decades of work.

  4. Is MZ of KSCO fame gaining any traction in the bay area? Most of us here who've listened to his station find it a joke. Teabagger politics does not translate we to the high level of intellect around here.

    1. I'll let him answer that if he so chooses.

    2. High level of intellect? There must be two "bay areas", I'm not familiar with the one you are referring to.

    3. Native here... High level of intellect? Try the Peoples Republic of Santa Cruz. You obviously are a transplant. And I suppose you enjoy all the homeless that have relocated here as well due to the high level of intellects that have moved in like yourself.

    4. By "high level of intellect" do you mean "take this handout but make sure you keep voting for the Democrat on the ballot"? The bankrupt state and cities are enough examples of the "high levels of intellect" locally and statewide.

  5. What happened to Damon Bruce?

    1. Damon suffered a stroke a few weeks back; survived, thankfully --spending time in the hospital and had a setback but is resting comfortably and should be back at 'The Game' soon, exactly when I'm not certain.

      Wish him the best.

      He's so young. Terrible news.

  6. Can you give us any more information about how overstaffed KQED is? Then I won't feel so bad about not being a huge donor!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Overstaffed and incompetently run; if it were a traditional business it would have been run down and out.

But because KQED is considered royalty here and dealt with like soft kitten paws, it is allowed to continue to get away with the most unscrupulous business practices and is off limits to any real scrutiny ...a real crime if there ever was one.

  10. Looking forward to the next column about unscrupulous KQED.
It is one thing to take pride in professionalism, it's another to obsess about it so much that nobody at a station can breathe. Griffith was too extreme for a lot of respected colleagues when KTVU had the newsroom freedom it no longer has now. Plus, her voice and sometimes her personality rubbed a lot of viewers along with the aforementioned colleagues the wrong way.
Glad to hear George Watson is doing just fine.
Sad that John Madden has to put up with the Raiders' inevitable move to the Strip, even as many ex-Eastbay residents now call Las Vegas home (one member of Raider Nation, Oakland-born and now living in Vegas, used to live next door to me in Fremont).
Hope MZ is using his station to help heal as a widower. Not a fan of most of the syndicated personalities there (anyone who supports any serial abuser, even if he holds the Top Job, will never get my respect, let alone trust; BTW, Stephen Colbert's parody of Alex Jones is hilariously priceless), but if all this programming helps MZ move forward, then good for him.
The Bruce stroke got lost in the shuffle at The Game, not only because of the Warriors' return to a Cavaliers rematch, but because the A's have surprised a lot of folks by staying so close to the Texas MLB teams for so long in the AL West. The Raiders' Vegas plans have also kept The Game busy, so Bruce's recovery is more private than expected.
And finally, LOL at the Earache remarks! And Rich, get healthier! Your services here are greatly appreciated! Keep up the fine work!

    1. anon at 7:07pm, Dennis Richmond was a flat out asshole. Arrogant, rude, and hard to work with. Cowards would never stand up to him. Two people who did, Rita Williams, and Leslie were the exception. Funny, but Dennis and his shortcomings were always excused by people not calling him on it, or else by couching it in "He just has high standards, and is demanding". Well, so did Leslie, and she managed to be a nice person, who by the way, paid for George Watsons' last go round with a detox to finally get him clean, and loaned money to people in the newsroom. Some who stiffed her. Just saying.

    2. Always digged Rita Williams; Bay peers did, too. One Tribune critic from the 1980s would gladly debate Griffith with 12:25. Think he moved to the Press Democrat in the 1990s, may be retired now. May have similar feelings about Richmond, but never used philanthropy to effect his critique toward newscasters. Think it was Mann who described Griffith like the above critique of Richmond.

    3. I interviewed a co-worker of Dennis Richmond's at KTVU a few years ago on the local radio station in the small town we (the co-worker and I) both live in. She said he was a little difficult, but I think the most telling thing she said, off the air/record, unfortunately, is that he got his start because he was working at the station in some kind of support roll (maybe he pulled cables for the cameras or moved the set around, something like that) and management decided they needed a black person on-air. Someone pointed and said, "Send him to broadcasting school," and a local star was born! Since the comment was off the air/record, I'm not comfortable naming her, but if you wanted to learn Hawaiian dancing in the Wine Country and did a Google search, you might be able to figure it out.

  11. I am old enough to remember when the Feds forced the automobile makers to include the FM band on their car radios...FM was deemed to be unwanted by customers.

Now I see that BMW is removing the AM band from some of its cars.

Rich, am I getting TOO old?

    2. Remember when 640 and 1240 on the AM dial is where we were told to turn in the event of civil (emergency) defense (CD). The system that we now have prevents major jamming.

    3. Unless things have changed, BMW isn't excluding AM radios from all of it's cars, just the new electric one because the electrical noise from the car itself compromises the AM reception.

  12. Is it possible Cumlus purchased KGO with the sole purpose being to destroy the station? It seems that every action / change they made has only decreased the listener base and caused a huge backlash. I do not cater to conspiracy theories, but sometimes I wonder.

What happened to weekend DJ, Lejf Jaeger. He was said to have left 107.7 The Bone because he wasn't getting ahead and wanted to pursue other interests, but I've heard otherwise elsewhere.

  14. Don't expect an answer on this, but I'm sure I know what you'd say. Got stuck in traffic on 101 north near Palo Alto at 508 pm. Going up 101 was mistake No. 1. There was a serious accident on 101. Mistake No. 2 was relying on KCBS for traffic updates. They had some goober who was probably peeing in his pants while doing the report. Lots of stumbles, had no clue what he was saying. It took him what seemed to be an eternity to tell you what the problem was on 101 (3-car wreck with a flipped over vehicle). What was funny was the dolt said, "There's a lot of traffic out there" before he started his report. It's Sunday afternoon at 5 pm. But you're in the No. 4 market in the nation. You expect this kind of crap if you're in Abeline, Kansas or Yankton, South Dakota. But this is a major market. I guess you get what you pay for. They do offer traffic reports on satellite at least. Boy, I should've listened to them instead of this yutz.

  15. Is KGO really serious about having Ethan Bearman's show repeated in the 7 to 10 p.m. hours? Or are they trying to figure out what to do next? Of course they would not try to please their listeners by putting on John Rothmann or Pat Thurston. Sad and infuriating.
