  1. How much do sarah and vinny make?

  2. Do you ever foresee a new radio station with a local talk format like the old KGO in the future?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No unfortunately because the corporations that now run radio, (Cumulus, IHeart, etc) don't know LOCAL --that's why the old KGO was such a gem because it was truly a Bay Area station...now talk is mostly syndicated tripe and NON-local. We're in a different world

      Delete
    2. The old KGO was one of the things I liked about this place.

      Delete
    3. How then, do you explain KMJ Fresno. a Cumulus station (out of market, I know, but you can pick it up in a lot of the Bay Area)? This morning, while A & G were reading "mean tweets" from the CMAs on KGO, KMJ's morning team was analyzing all the propositions on Tuesday's ballot. Yea, they're right-ish, but they're not "right-wing wackos" for the most part. Do they all work really cheap? Does someone have a heck of a lot of pictures? Or ? ? ?

  4. Do you see any of the current local anchors and broadcasters turning into local TV news institutions like Dave McElhatton, Kate Kelly, Suzanne Saunders, Dennis Richmond, Van Amburg, or Wayne Walker, for example, or has Cable TV made that scenario unlikely to ever happen again?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No and cable has very little to do with it. Good people and good talent are just that; good. So if I want to watch a particular anchor who I like, then I'll watch whether it's local or cable.

The only local anchors that are worthy of mention are Dan Ashley, Ken Wayne, and on occasion, Frank Somerville. Julie Haener is good too but there's no Amburg nor Mac nor Kelly out there.

      Delete
    2. SO disagree with you on Haener. 1) I've worked with her, and she's a total deer in the headlights. 2) When she anchors she seems incapable of doing much beyond staring blankly into the camera and uttering the occasional "Um" after a sad story. Her follow-up questions and spontaneous comments, on the rare occasions she bothers, are ludicrous.

      Delete
    3. I'd only add this about Somerville. He's probably the closest, but partly because he's a legend in his own mind.

      Delete
    4. @11:38
      Ok, Heather, whatever you say.
Fact is, Dennis Richmond had high praise for Julie and as most know, he didn't dish it out often.

  5. Laura Garcia-Cannon & Brent Cannon: any news?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It's a tough story to cover b/c of the subject matter. Plus, no one's talking --I'm still on it though and will try to get you any new info if it happens.

      Delete
  6. Could you give us an idea, using numbers of viewers, how local TV news viewership has changed over the years? Rather than reporting percentages or ratings points, I'm curious about how many people are watching each Bay Area station's newscasts today, compared to ten or twenty years ago. Obviously, news sources and demographics have changed, but is there a point where our local stations decide the number of people watching their newscasts no longer justifies not just minimal cost but any cost?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're right, times have changed. Social media figures highly in the "numbers" that is why you see the stations always plug their apps and appeal to you to "join up." ...Viewership is measured by Sweeps which are usually in November, February and May. I may be missing a month or so and local TV News ratings are gathered by Nielsen.

Cost is always a factor, today and yesterday but years ago budgets were much bigger and revenue much higher although this being an election year, the TV stations are making a lot of money.

      Delete
    2. TV stations use newscasts and other "public affairs programming" (what little is left of it these days) to brand and give identity to their station. It's not *just* a dollars-and-cents thing, although more and more it's becoming that as stations do less news and more "lifestyle" programs and paid-for infomercials. It's not just about the Nielsen ratings, though.

      Delete
    3. 11:36 AM, yeah, that makes sense. I'm simply curious about the actual number of people watching Bay Area local TV news today, compared to any number of years ago. Stations are engaged in a never-ending battle over a tenth of a rating point through eternity, but for how many actual viewers?

      Delete
  7. When will Fox2 stop rotating anchors? I find myself changing channels at 10:00 pm eveytime if Frank, Ken or Julie are not anchors now. While Heather is soft on the eyes, she is NOT a vey good anchor, and Ross makes me puke.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wholeheartedly agree with you about Heather Holmes; in my mind she's overrated and not very good.

Ross Palombo is a nincompoop --I guess KTVU mgt. thinks he's good eye candy and hip for the millennial crowd (who don't watch much TV News b/c they're on their "mobile devices")...Truth be told, I don't think KTVU knows what the hell they're doing nor do they have any sense of direction. Thus, rotating anchors and confusion galore.

      Delete
    2. Palumbo really needs to find a new tailor; all his suits look to be at least two sizes too small...between that, his Howdy Doody-on-meth face and the OMG-the-earth-is-melting-never-mind-it's-just-a-cheeseburger-on-the-ground voice, it's a channel-changer every time...

      Delete
    3. And never mind the gay pride references on his social media pages. I hope he's out.

      Delete
  8. I've been wondering this for a long time...

Do advertisers get to choose which radio personality does their commercials? Say a company wants a commercial on KSFO. Do they actually choose that gravel-voiced woman from the morning show to read their commercial? Do they consider how many people immediately turn off the radio or change the station when they hear that voice?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, advertisers can hire a talent --it's called a "live read" or pre-taped spot for which the talent is paid --depending on who they are, it could be a lot of money...YES, of course they consider the person because they don't want to piss off their customers.

      Delete
    2. Then they must not know how much they're pissing off their customers.

Is it a price thing? Does Sussman or even an unknown with a decent voice cost too much?

      Delete
    3. What's to wonder? Of course. They're footing the bill!

      Delete
    4. I worked at a public agency that advertised on KNBR. The personality choices depend on the amount of ad money you're going to spend with them, or they used to. $10, Kate Scott. $100,000, Tom Tolbert or Brian Murphy with greater ad frequency and duration of campaigh. They also might tie in some kind of remote event with your on-air spokesperson if you're spending enough dough and your product or service is local. They usually have some sales stats to go along with what the choices they give.

It sure sounds like Kate Scott writes her own ads for My Pillow and Certa Pro Painting - maybe someone in the ad dept polishes them up a little. As an advertiser, given her as a choice, I'd say, "Thanks, but no thanks."

As much money as John Handlery spends for his hotel ads, I'd tactfully tell him we have an ad sales staff and he shouldn't write his own ads. But he's spending twice what he needs to because of the length of his ads and the need to show everyone how funny and witty he is. It's his money, I guess.

      Delete
    5. All I know is, someone is an idiot putting Chip Franklin on so many ads. I change channels. Can't stand his program or on=air voice and won't listen how dirty his travel pillow is.

      Delete
    6. If you're doing an endorsement then talent can set the rate in this market. Personalities can get big bucks, regular shmoes get scale. Scale is different in each station's contract. If it is just a 'read' no endorsement, then talent could be free.

  12. I realize you have excessive (and sometimes unwarranted) vitriol for most everyone in the Bay Area media, but why the continual potshots at Armstrong & Getty? And is there anyone behind a mic or camera in the area that you actually appreciate?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, not really.

I think John Rothmann is superb. He's like listening to a college professor you really look forward for their lectures...People hate me for liking Savage but it's an acquired taste...As for Armstrong and Getty, I think they're smarmy, unfunny and political hacks masking as objective observers. I can see through that as easily as their fake laughs and cackles.

      Delete
    2. He says A&M are political hacks and that he can see through their act. Uhhh....revisit the first guy you praised.

      Delete
    3. Well, actually you're wrong. Savage is neither a Dem or Repub; rips them equally if you listen. Sure, now he's pro-Trump and I disagree about that but what am I going to do, turn him off? No, b/c he still at times can be funny and creative as hell as I've written so many times.

      Delete
    4. I think he meant Rothmann.

      Delete
    5. And again, you miss the A&G humor. Either you're too tight or are jealous of their success but they rip both sides and yes, they tend to rip the liberal side more with all the give-aways that cost us all money but they DO show a lot of humor on ALL daily current events both sides equal. I enjoy the laughs after an evening of NEWS.

Lighten up Rich, you're not a political expert or a good commentator of current events. You're an entertainment reviewer which is fine. It's you're nitch.

      Delete
    6. In a debate Rothmann would clean A & G's clock, no contest. Make it 5 on 1, throw in Sussman, Franklin, and Bachelor and JR would easily beat those pea brained fools.

      Delete
    7. 7:56 you are mostly right, not sure about Bachelor, I don't agree with him on much, but he sounds intelligent enough. As for Rich liking Savage, yes Savage can be entertaining, but for the most part I find him annoying. Lately whenever I turn in to find out his take on the issues, all I hear Savage ranting and raving about Obama, how he is a criminal, a traitor, on and on, I turn the dial after a few minutes, and then don't bother to check back later.

  13. When will KGO(cumulus) pull the chain on Armstrong and getty and fluse and replace their rotten program? (give Ronn his hour back)

    ReplyDelete

    1. When more and more people like you stop listening.

      Delete
    2. While A&M is not my cup of tea either, I suspect A&M are in for the long haul on KGO because they likely bring in much needed revenue rather than high ratings and likely cost less than Mr. Owens since they are also distributed to other stations.

      Delete
    3. KGO paid a nice sum for A & G and the ratings are dismal. Better off (and cheaper)giving Ronnnnnn his hour back and have news from 6a-9am. I never cared for morning zoo shows and that's what A & G is. Non-stop cackling, sound affects and not local. Not for me.

    1. This might surprise a lot of you but I like and respect Marty Lurie. He works his ass off; look, do I think there's an excess to his show? Yes, but I like Marty for the way he treats his guests and callers--he's good people even if he's a Giants' fan.

    2. Love to see Moore get a spot at KNTV/NBC Bay Area once the KRON purge does happen. Don't know how Heenan & Liviakis would handle a transition like this, so I don't know where they feel they could fit. And Roberts? Same thing, don't know.
We can simply bid adios to the rest and see where they go. Except for the Bentley, of course, which should be an entertaining purge collision between the new owners and the guy who loves to intimidate and get his way no matter what. Good Riddance!
Hope KRON turns Spanish and becomes a Telefutura affiliate. KRON in NBC Espanol - like the old days, but with a different language.

  17. Haven't heard Greg Papa on the radio lately? They (other hosts) keep saying he's on vacation? Thoughts?

    1. He's been doing a lot of double duty with both his radio station gig and Raiders PBP so I thinks it's just some extra vacation days.

      Delete
  18. Why do radio stations broadcast questionable ads such as Rich Uncles, Online Trading Academy, My Pillow and the so called "Invest with us, you cannot lose" ads and programs. Is it the revenue stream, a lack of integrity / morals or their attempt to survive with a continuing loss of listener's?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because they're so damn greedy they grab all the money they can. Who cares about fucking ethics. "Ethics"? Who cares about that!

      Delete
    2. ALSO, because the spots you hear are part of the package the advertisers get when the buy an infomercial...It is how KGO survives...Block Programing at about 5K per show. Smart Local guys know that there is NO listenership on the station, that's why KGO has little or no National Advertising.

  20. How long can Tommy's Joynt last on Van Ness accross from the old KRON building and a block away from the new California Pacific Medical Center building under construction? It just seems to me the immediate area is destined to go more high-end and then bye-bye Tommy's (at least in the next 1 - 3 years). Does Tommy's Joynt own the building? How old is the owner of Tommy's Joynt?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think Tommy's is doing just fine although I don't read their books. They have new owners. I don't think they own the building.

  21. What are your favorite sports teams in the Bay Area? Being an East Bay boy I would think that you'd be an A's fan but I see you talk Giant's more than A's.

    1. I love the A's --hometown team just sick to death that they have such terrible owners who have no regard for the community --I guess I'm spoiled by the Haas family who were the polar opposites of these horrible owners...I love the Raiders too but this move here, move there crap is beginning to make me sick...always loved the Warriors.

      Delete
    2. Rich, couldn't agree with you more. Huge A's fan, miss the Haas ownership, hate the present one. Always loved the Raider and W's but will be probably be done with the Raiders if they leave for LA or Vegas.

      Delete
    3. They're not going to Vegas. Relax.

      Delete
    4. Most non-Ice Cube Angelenos want nothing to do with the Raiders. And with NFL ratings down - not just because of a certain Hairpiece - LA leaders are no longer afraid to stand up to the NFL if they clearly don't want the Raiders and would rather have either the Rams alone or with the Chargers or another team possibly eager to move (Jaguars?)

      Delete
    5. Love that Rich is as Eastbay as I am. Three thoughts.
Pre-Schaaf, city & county leaders had plenty of chances to build a new A's ballpark for Schott-Hofmann, then Fisher-Wolff. But they were always afraid to pull the trigger because of one thing or another. Now with Mayor Libby & to a lesser degree, County Supervisor Scott Haggerty, we are finally albeit slowly seeing more communication between the two sides, although that may not say much. Still compared to the media networks that own our TV stations, Oakland & Alameda County are chatterboxes.
Just Lib, Baby. I wish Mr. Al were alive to test Mayor Schaaf's mettle. She's stronger than people think, and it would be interesting to hear Amy Trask's opinion on CBS Sports Network about the Mayor. Might surprise a lot of us. In the meantime, best wishes to Ronnie Lott's ownership group. They may be tight-lipped about the process, but they've always acted professional about the complicated Raiders negotiations compared again to the TV owners and Cloud Clowns.
As for the Warriors, see the Mission Bay Alliance website. While most San Franciscans would love to see the W's come home, they don't want it to interfere with emergency needs at UCSF Mission Bay Hospital next door. Hence, we may see more litigation up the wazoo before the Dubs' Arena on Third Street gets built. Besides, Oakland will always have greater basketball history than SF ever will. Why not upgrade Oracle? Even talk to Mr. Oracle and proud America's Cup owner Larry Ellison to see what he may suggest. Some of the MBA lawyers would clean the clocks of Cumulus, the NBA, even FOX et al. And as Cleveland & San Antonio have shown, the Dubs can be had. Might as well rethink leaving Oakland.

  25. Have you listened to KSFO morning show lately. Katie has gotten better, Sussman worse. How are their ratings, Sussman sounds weird, not sure how to describe it. What's with the intentionally mispronouncing of words. This morning when he talked about voting in Florida, every time he said Florida, he pronounced it FLARIDA, then repeated it 2-3 times. I noticed he often does that, repeat a word 3-4 times, changes his voice, pronounces words in a weird way. Is he trying to be interesting, or has he just gotten more weird?? I find it annoying, boring and somewhat childish.

    2. Not mine either, not sure why I listen, has to do with my sleep pattern, I usually wake up around 5 a.m. and am awake for about an hour before going back to sleep for a few more hours. A&G comes on at 6 a.m. on the new 860 Hugh Hewitt is on until 6 a.m. I listen occasionally, depends what he talks about, at least KSFO has local traffic, but I usually don't leave for work until around 11 a.m. so I guess it comes down to who are the most interesting? Or curiosity about how outrageous Brian and Katie can get. In my own defense I'm not fully awake, but I do have the radio on.

KTVU is very strong (still) at 10 PM; KGO dominates at 5 and 6 --KPIX is terrible in the morning but does OK at 5 and 11...KRON is not as terrible (rating-wise) as it should be --they peak in early evening but overall, they're last, yes, in Bay Area TV News ratings.
