KRON Off Air For Over 30 Minues During Morning Show; Update: KRON Goes Back on Air; Anchors Ignore 30 Minutes of Dead Air

Actually the symmetry of this couldn't be anymore symbolic. Even God seems to think they're an albatross.

UPDATE, 9: 02 PST KRON is back on; brain-dead anchors act as if nothing has ever happened --even as station was DEAD AIR for over 30 minutes --seems that massive Master Control Issue reared its ugly head at the worst time.

What a DISASTER!

  2. From the preceding posts, the most likely cause is
    "Girl fight! Girl fight!"

  3. It went on do long because... no one was watching KRON.

The only reason I tuned in was to see the chick drama after reading your blog.

Maybe KRON and BART both have a saboteur?

  4. To say KRON is falling apart is an understatement. How does that idiot in the News Director's chair keep his job?

  6. 30 minutes of the best programing on KRON ever?

  7. It took 30 minutes because one of the interns was sent to Radio Shack to pick up two capacitors and a carbon film resistor. Everything replaced now -- all is good.

  8. Let's not dwell on it. I know there have been times in the past, when any station anchors do say something and I agree they should since it is a "what the hell" moment for a viewer.

On the other hand, it is a business and why bite the hand that feeds them with advertisers. They have to do those make goods for all the commercials in a short time for that half hour that is lost and there is no time to even dwell or explain to the viewer about it.

I understand the trade off. Also I suspect if this does happen often fro KRON, then engineering, the GM and news director should make the case for maintenance and capital equipment investment since they are losing revenue. And don't stop trying. Even a shareholder would understand that and they can be creative about it, rather than ignoring it to satisfy investors.

  9. What's the BFD - no one watches that channel anyway.
    Noting to notice.
    Nothing to mention.
Why call attention to the fact that you work for such a crappy
station. Good call news director / decision maker.

  10. Could this have been a shared facility issue? Someone on the KGO side unplugs/powers-down something because "their" studios aren't active at the time.

  11. Well this ain't the first time if I recall correctly. Early another AM the same thing happened and also there was no mention of it. I think in that instance they were off the air from 5AM until almost 8AM and acted as if nothing happened.

If I were an advertiser I'd drop them... They should have a toll free call in number so the viewer (the one person) who is watching could tell them you are off the air...

It would be comical if someone in the building got the channels crossed and the newscasts reversed on air... With KRON you never know...

  12. Why dwell on it? Radio people deal with transmitters going down all the time. Get the transmitter back up, do a legal ID and continue with your day. The public doesn't need an explanation

  13. You know, I heard that if you use a couple of those "Thyristors" from BART, that might solve the transmission problems.

  14. Didn't KRON recently get rid of their team in Master Control so they could switch to automation somewhere in the Midwest? Probably not the last time this happens. I'm sure all those people who got laid off got a laugh from hearing this.
