Evan White: Not often recognized as one of the Bay Area great news anchors of the 70's and 80's; broadcasting at
KRON and
KGO.
About as calm and steady as they come; the complete newsman with the crisp delivery and proper tone.
Evan White is still living in the Bay Area and enjoying retirement.
Thanks for the memories, Rich. I Youtubed 'Evan White KGO KRON' - It was fun tripping down memory lane until I got to:
ReplyDelete'KRON NewsCenter 4 Update - 1/24/86 - Part 1 of 3'
And there was Radnich doing a live spot from the Super Bowl in
New Orleans.
Evan is a professional and a class act... He has earned an enjoyable retirement and I wish him well...
ReplyDeleteEvan White was a consummate professional during the Loma Prieta Earthquake, delivering the news with nerves of steel. I was relaxed and able to take a dump that day, knowing Evan had everything under control.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad everything came out ok
DeleteYou and Evan are to be commended. I didn't have nerves of steel during the quake, I wasn't relaxed, and I took a dump in my pants.
DeleteEvan is my father. As a kid he was my hero and as an adult, well, he still is. Dad retired at just the right time in journalism`s de-evolution. I remember when KRON released their new tag line... "Infotainment". I also remember shortly there after him saying "I'm not sure how long I can be a part of this". He lasted a few more years before it became all to obvious that his values were no longer in alignment with the direction the news industry had taken. Like I said, he retired at just the right time. He still lives in, and loves, the San Francisco Bay Area.
DeleteHe was not only a consummate professional, but the nicest and most genuine and caring person you'll ever meet. I feel privileged to have worked with him.
ReplyDeleteEvan impacted my life greatly with his series "Old Age, Do Not go Gentle". I've been searching for video for years so that I could share it with friends and family; I've never been able to find that video, but the Pachelbel Canon in D reminds me of the Peabody Award winning documentary work every time I hear it. Thanks, Evan!
ReplyDeleteBetti, the KRONvicts page on FB might be able to help you out.
DeleteYou nailed it Betti, down to Pachelbel, I love Evan, got to see and know him on a daily when he came to KRON, a lovely man with a beautiful soul .
DeletePat Law now living on Maui
He made me a better writer in the short time I worked with him. Tough on writers, but the result was always better than what you started with.
ReplyDeleteWhite actually started his Bay career in the field for KPIX in the 1960s. But clearly his most glorious years were at KRON before the Chron stiffed NBC and sold to Young, which was gobbled up by Media General. When KRON ruined itself, White smelled a rat, probably more than one rat, and left.
ReplyDeleteEvan resembled post Brady Bunch Robert Reed.
ReplyDeleteI worked with him at Channel 7 in the 70's, Kron/NBC in the 80's and BayTV in the 90's... one of the best and most genuine...
ReplyDeleteEvan and I made a citizen's arrest of a drunk driver in Marin County one evening many years ago as I was giving Evan a lift a home. I wonder if he remembers that?
ReplyDeleteA class act. His "Live at Five" was a groundbreaking newscast in the early 80's. I loved watching it as a J-school grad student at Cal, and then getting a chance to working on it with Evan. The format was new, fast-paced, and fun. Too bad it didn't catch on.
ReplyDeleteEvan White use to live next door to my aunt's house on Vallejo St in San Francisco. I was probably about 7 or 8 years of age, male, Chinese. Evan was a real nice guy, real friendly. Every time I saw him he would say hi to me and talk to me for a little bit too.
ReplyDeleteI went to Van Nuys Jr Hi with Him. His nickname was Sparky.
