Smoke and Mirrors at KTVU/Fox 2

*A Longtime KTVU reporter who requested anonymity because they feared reprisal from the idiots running the Jack London Square asylum:

"we're a sad-sack news operation--we've reached the journalistic abyss. It's really bad around here. The worst I've seen in some time."

It's one thing to blame the FOX miscreants for turning KTVU into a TV News house of ill repute; they have. But senior staff, including those who work on the air are the biggest station sellouts --they have gone out of their way to sell out and kiss major ass to the suits working upstairs, more so some of those who have major influence at the Fox station.

  1. If Kevin McCarthy were still running the show, he'd put an end to that horseshit real quick, goddamit.

  2. In a business where it now appears that no one is beyond an immediate hatchet, I can't blame the on-air talent for kissing whatever asses they need to for their own self-preservation. It isn't as if there's a lot of journalistic integrity at the competition.
In the meanwhile, one of Channel Two's most nauseating creatures apparently doesn't like anywhere he eats out, probably because the service people can't stand who they are serving. He should start patronizing places where they DYKWIA card actually works, which is probably only in LA. http://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=Q5CgdFUKIB7fwtioYeS6DA

    2. Believe me, in LA they have real stars pulling that shit, so a TV reporter or anchor person doesn't even rate

  3. Regardless of what goes on at the station, I wouldn't watch local FOX news anywhere because of all the nerve-jarring ads they continuously run advertising their sleezy Fox Entertainment shows on Channel 2. Kind of like all the ads for that local charlatan of a casino that makes me reach for the mute on the remote every single time on every channel and my wife even thanks me because it is so friggin' annoying.

    1. Not only are the ads nerve-jarring, but they (and I'm surprised Rich hasn't commented on this) have this new gimmick where the music for the segments, weather, etc ("stings," as they call them) is loud and jarring. They're saying PAY ATTENTION! And it's a very cheap way of getting it.

Do they really think this makes more people watch?

  4. Time for some good stuff, I mean really good stuff, Brittney Shipp tonight!! Wow, what a woman!

My next door neighbor, an elderly gent, has COPD (breathing problems,) and relies on one of those small green oxygen bottles to help him get through the day. He said when Brittney is doing the weather, he has to increase the flow of oxygen coming from the bottle, for fear of passing out!

How do I join one of those, "I Want To Marry Brittney" clubs that are popping up all over the Bay area?

Dropdead gorgeous woman, displayed properly. Great job KRON, absolutely perfect!!

    1. Not knocking Brittney Shipp (though honestly don't see what all the fuss is about) but it's interesting that 10 or 15 years ago she'd have been considered too fat to be on TV. A lot of more recent anchors and reporters are chunky. It's interesting how our perceptions have changed.

  5. Yeah, but the ass-kisser in the suit makes got into this business to "do good," and he makes such a big difference in people's lives by...reading words someone else wrote and acting concerned.

    1. God, so true. Or as Rich called him, Mother Theresa. Except MT doesn't drive a red sports car.

  6. Is KTVU on the same path as 810 KGO? Going from first to worst???

  7. Love the site, but would also love to see some coverage of Leo Laporte's shenanigans on his Petaluma-based TWiT podcasts. "New" media journos shouldn't get a free pass when it comes to exposing biased reporting and ethical lapses. Just sayin'

  8. And, it all happened so fast. Not a slow downward death spiral. More like sudden massive bleedout.

    1. Hardly fast. The spiral has been noticeable for ten years. It's just gotten insanely bad in the last one or two.

  9. For all the complaining that goes on, people are still watching KTVU. Their 4 PM doesn't do very well but their 5 and 6 PM news are still strong in the key demographic (25-54) as is the 10PM. The 10 PM is not getting quite the numbers it use to but it remains the most watched late newscast in the Bay Area. How do I know this? I get the numbers everyday.

The other stations seem oblivious to what has happened. Probably the consultants telling them this is the latest and greatest way to get people to watch. You want them to slide, then go after their viewers and take them instead of trying some gimmick.

We can whine all we want about how our once great TV institution has been desecrated but until people start flipping the channel to something else, it is just that. Whining. They don't care until the ratings go in the tank and so far the ratings haven't changed a whole lot.

    1. Not getting quite the same numbers? KTVU had the highest news ratings in the nation! You've lost 70-80% percent of your audience chump.

  10. I understand being between a rock and a hard place at a job with demanding management. Fox2 probably told anchors and reporters that if you value your job then you will talk like a pirate, engage in "happy talk" and follow the new rules. I faced something similar in the workplace, and I spoke up for myself and others who were afraid to speak. The end result was that I was looking for a job in three months. The end result is that others were intimidated and never confronted managment directly. We are expendable.

  11. In regards to 10:49 AM - after regularly watching KTVU and only KTVU for over 30 years - I have stopped watching. Sure, I might tune-in for a few quick hits here and there, but essentially, I can't handle more than 5 minutes at a crack. Also, we're not too far away from the day when none of this will even matter. For all their mighty struggles to remain "hip" and "relevant," (as if that's what local news was suppose to be), local tv news is already looking and acting more and more like TMZ and Entertainment Tonight. No one's going to be changing the channel on anything when the exciting new world of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr are just a click away.

  12. Sick to death of all the sighing and moaning from the anchors after sad stories, and the, "That's the most wonderful thing I've ever heard" comments after certain human interest stories.

Does Somerville have to comment after every damn story? I used to like the guy, but now he's getting on my nerves.
