KGO Radio/Cumulus To Deemphasize Sports; Radich Move Only The Beginning

This is not entirely shocking: KGO Radio; among other areas they're about to rid themselves courtesy the Cumulus cut machine, is in the process of deemphasizing sports, at least sports reports. It began with the firing of Kevin Radich and will probably coincide with other eliminations down the road.

Longtime sports anchor/reporter/SD in the morning, Rich Walcoff, who is a 31-year veteran at KGO, is safe for now and figures to be around for the foreseeable future given his tenure but with Cumulus, you never know.

They have ongoing issues you see.

My gut tells me KGO will see a few more mid-tenured staff reductions; people who are fulltime and in the union are on the cutting edge so that part-timers (who are cheaper) can fill the void.

That's why the rank and file (in the newsroom)  are on edge and expressing major anxiety in the break room over their status and murky future.

  1. is it not ironic that the people running KGO are Lee hammer and Cumulus Sports VP Jim Mahanay? What a company. I guess we are expected to keep doing Kevin's plan. at least they can't fire him when it doesn't work

  4. That is an excellent photograph of Brandon and Mrs. McCarthy, who just so happened to have her blouse yanked open at the top. The pose is fun and entertaining. Both people are young and at their peak of hotness.

  6. This is good news. I don't want to hear any sports crap. Watching and listening to sports is a huge waste of time.

    1. Hey, without sports to report on, how could guys with a marginal intellect earn a living by marketing their skill for remembering trivial crap, like which pitcher adjusted his jockstrap on the mound in the ninth inning, the most times in 2015? Or by interviewing "sports stars," who have difficulty stringing three intelligent sentences together for the interview? Or by reporting the day's latest crime stories for "sports stars" who can't control the roid rage that comes from their overdosing on steroids, so they beat their wives to a bloody pulp in an elevator, or their $200,000 sports car?

If sports were to disappear overnight, there would be sports reporters all over the U.S. who were thrown out of work, thereby losing their ability to help support major brewing companies, as well as major pot vendors. The end results could be catastrophic for the national lowlife-economy!!

But, I guess they could always change careers and start pumping out septic tanks for a living. Guys of their limited intellectual capacity have been earning a living doing that, for at least one hundred years now.

If I had nothing more to offer the world-at-large, than an ability to remember and spout out stupid worthless sports trivia, I'd do the rest of the world a favor and jump off of a bridge somewhere.

      LOL

    3. Sports H8ter, it's funny you have so little respect for a reporters position yet you deem this senseless little blog worthy of your time to comment on. Shouldn't someone so superior have much better things to do? So, you don't like sports. Well, I don't like business news. I don't get all snotty about it's right to exist. Many people are interested. Get over yourself.

  8. The headline should be: "KGO/CUMULUS DEEMPHASIZE QUALITY". To the morons who think any sports is crap, you must be Kim Komando fans. Btw Rich, this afternoon I almost puked when I heard chef Ryan Scott and his sidekick, Secret Yellow Man. I thought these idiots would be fired! What the hell? How does he keep his gig? When will the Dickies come to their senses and replace the chef with John Batchelor or "the best of Ronnnnnnnn Lowensteinnnnnnnnnn"?

    1. Ronn's 1.2 share and tombstone skewing demo appeals greatly to the hip programmers in Atlanta.

    2. I would guess that most (all?) guests on "Cookin' wit Ryan Scott" (I think that's what the show is called...isn't it?) are "pay-to-play," which is practically free money for KGO/Cumulus!

    3. I doubt highly guests are paying to be on that show. It's free publicity. He's such a terrible joke of a host I'm sure he just tells someone to schedule anyone they can get. On location maybe they pay but that's where it ends.

  9. There are new "sell" reports all over Wall Street in the last week or two for Cumulus.

  10. Damn... They let go of the wrong guy. Walcoff is a no-talent, stuffed shirt who's in love with himself. He's got an ego as big as Texas. Frankly, they can eliminate whatever the hell they want at KGO. Who listens to that garbage station anyway?

  11. And when that happens AFTER you re-up your CEO. It's not a good sign.
