Steve Kerr New Warriors Coach and KNBR and Kawakami MIA (Until The Last Minute)

Steve Kerr is now the head coach of the Warriors. The move was reported first by TNT.

I have SOME QUESTIONS.

Where was Tolbert? He's only talked about his college friend and mentor 600,000 times. You'd have thunk Kerr would have confided KNBR's PM drive guy with a quick phone call.

Funny too, that locally, it was NBC Bay Area that reported the Kerr-W's development first just before 6 PM PT.

And finally, Mr. Warriors "Insider" for the SJ Merc, Tim Kawakami, the writer that knows everything; has his heart and soul on the Dubs' beat? Where was Kawakami? A little late to the party, it appears. Sorry, re-tweets of the scooper don't count.

  1. You mean Tom Tool bert? This guy is a know nothing mumble mouth idiot. Ive never heard any radio host drone on about such nonsense gibberish while the co host du jour does their best Ed McMahon, laughing hysterically at nothing remotely funny. Coming up, we'll carry on…. No shit sherlock, thats why you are there

    1. Tom's funny as hell, and I enjoy his tangents. Ratto is great as a cohost, just don't bring byrnes back.

    3. Tolbert and Woodson are the two best guys on KNBR.

  2. KNBR did report the hiring on Tolbert's show just before 5:30, but it was the news and score guy who reported that TNT was saying Kerr had been hired. They took a quick, unscheduled break and when they came back Tolbert said that he had talked to Kerr who confirmed 5 years.

I agree with the first commenter, Tolbert likes to hear himself talk too much, and always tries to inject humor into everything. Tuesday evening he and Ray Woodson interviewed Stevie Johnson on his trade to the 49ers, ten minutes later Damon Bruce interviewed Johnson on 95.7. Damon got much more insight and information from Johnson, even if his interview was second.

    1. Tom's humor insertions are perfect for the drive home, or if one is already working from home and just dealing with stupid clients, or a crazy world. I like Tom's humor. I think he does know sports well, and isn't too shabby with the life observations (though he can get a bit preachy on the gay/race thing from time to time) either.

  3. tolbert is truly awful, but its not his fault. he is obviously doing it for the money, the bosses are asleep at the wheel his show is basically getting from one commercial break to another, filling time with nonsensical observations and reading stats from the internet. it seems that he is trying to mimic his buddy jim rome with the comedic takes but the guy is just not funny. ray woodson laughing like a jackass almost makes it worth tuning in.

    1. Tolbert has always been a Jim Rome wanna be.
From his speaking cadence to his juvenile humor.
An original thought from Tom Tolbert? That will never happen.

  4. The bay area sports reporters were the last to know about the Kerr hire because most people in the national media consider the local media here as backwater.
Sorry but that is the perception.
    Want proof? Ask Colin Kaepernick.

    1. Backwater? Try unfiltered toilet water. This is the worst sports media market in the nation. Bar none.

  5. Let's see, Kerr currently works for TNT. So instead of allowing them to make the announcement of his hiring, he's supposed to insist that his old friend Tom gets to break the story on KNBR?

Get real, Rich. You're reaching on this one more than usual.

  6. Agreed tolbert and juvenile humour are one and the same. He used to close the show with saying another mans meal is another mans waste product. At least they got rid of that one after he said it long enought.

  7. Kerr currently is employed by TNT as a Basketball Analyst. Do you think Kerr is not going to give his employer the scoop over some guy he used to play with or Local Reporter?

  8. People do realize that there are a couple reasons why Tolbert holds down KNBR's coveted afternoon drive slot, does color for the Warriors and did it for ESPN, right? He's pretty good.

    2. The problem with our local Bay Area Sport Media is that the majority of them are so far up the ownerships behinds that they can see their tonsils...I.E. see the York 49er lead ownership for proof....

  10. I have to admit, CSN Bay Area was by far the best at covering this story. Everyone else played catch up, as Sportsnet Central continued to break news as they brought in analysts to share their thoughts, Garry Saint Jean, Marc Spears, Tim Kawakami, Monte Poole, Ray Ratto, Lacob quotes etc...Just great stuff overall and best of luck to Kerr.

  11. I was jumping into my car around 5:30, KNBR was in commercial break, of course, so the first place I heard the news was when it was reported on 95.7. Figured KNBR would jump back into programming, but no. So, I headed up the dial to 1140 (Sacramento) where Napier was talking about it. Finally, after I was nearly home, KNBR finished their commercial break and I heard Tolbert talking about it for a couple of minutes.

I realize KNBR broke the story right before their commercial break, but you'd think the radio home of the Warriors would have stayed with programming during drivetime, when many listeners are turning on their radios after getting into their cars.

  12. At first 9-12 said all that Lacob wanted to hear. Then, the truth came out as the jokes needed truth.."A parking valet".."the greeter at the country club".."Yes Joe,you are always right, brown noser"..the last hinted at.
So no racism on any level? Then wheres the list of African American candidates?..interviewed?. Joe wanted a WASP. In Meyers and son he has family and his own culture. WASP is what he deals with in business. You might be Asian and part owner of the Warriors..but ferget that any of you know something about basketball!
Woman? yeah. I bring that up just to show how locked in we are. That's near crazy talk.
From father figure to the players coach,to company yes man. That will go over big with Oakland State Warrior players.

    1. I'm pretty sure Mark Jackson was Lacob's personal pick for head coach.

    2. And as MT2 wrote..Lacob didn't know how to deal with a black man who didnt agree.
Lacob until now had excuses. "The winningest coach in the NBA"..fired by Lacob. "Players coach, Smart" fired. And now a coach who wins- fired. Add the peripherals..all the black coaches have not been re hired or hired by other teams? This is a REAL ugly firing.

    3. It's disappointing they hired a white male. Everyone knows that only white people are racist. After that terrible mean old Sterling guy mouths off, it's the last thing that should be done, is hire a white man to replace Mark Jackson. I mean, Pastor Jackson is a PREACHER! You don't fire a preacher and hire a white man! How racist is that!???!

  13. Kawakami a Warriors insider? He isn't even the paper's beatwriter. He was trying to squeeze in some vacation which is fair enough, he's a hardworking writer. He doesn't just cover the W's, he's my go to guy on the Niners. He's not a cheerleader for local teams, which makes his insights valuable. Great interview with Lacob, another with Kerr posted today. Best sportswriter in the Bay Area.

    1. Yes I'll second his Lacob interview. Was informative.
      One of his better works.

  14. Best of luck to Kerr. Hopefully he's not a non-denomination preacher and can keep his personal religious beliefs away from the team.

    1. What a prejudiced statement! Everyone knows that we have freedom of religion in this country. Unless of course, you're a white male with a beard who has your own opinions about homosexuals, then you should shut your bigoted mouth!

I hope we hear some good preaching from Pastor Jackson on ESPN. Maybe the good pastor can tell us all how bad we are for having any white people on basketball teams. Because as we all know, and Stan reminds us when we forget, white people are racist, and the devil's spawn.

  15. Kerr will do just fine because he understands the intrigue and egos of the NBA from the inside, having worked not only as a player (like Jackson), but as a GM with Phoenix. Plus he's on much more familiar and friendlier terms with Lacob and the rest of the Warriors' front office crew. And getting a chance to work with an up and coming team of mostly smart, selfless, 'all for one and one for all' kind of players trumped his long time relationship with Phil Jackson. Plus his daughter goes to school at Cal. I think the Warriors did a good job getting the guy they wanted. Now all he has to do is to take them to the West Conference Finals in 2015!
