Exclusive: Savage Draws Ire of 55 Hawthorne; Jealousy Galore among KGO/KSFO/KNBR Staffers; VIP Parking Spot Uproar One of Many Beefs

 Jealousy Galore at 55 Hawthorne!

And guess who is at the center of the storm? In the eye of the hurricane and carrying on as if he doesn't care and due to his considerable clout and influence, he shouldn't: Michael Savage, who does his massively successful syndicated talk show, (heard here on KSFO), from a VIP studio away from the "other people."

Other people? Savage is considered royalty by the upper Cumulus management and has been rewarded with his own parking space, the closest to the upstairs studio; gets his mail hand-delivered and has a per-diem allowing him VIP food --provided by the Dickeys--whether he's broadcasting from 55 Hawthorne or his new home studio.

And it's those goodies, (and a lavish broadcast set-up with more goodies daily), that has drawn the ire of fellow staffers, hosts, and other Cumulus officials, even high-ranking talent.

Among those "high-ranking" talent who lead the jealousy list is none other than Ronn Owens, the KGO talker who has never liked Savage and privately is "pissed off" at the lavish treatment given to the "Savage Nation" star himself.

A local broadcast executive who knows the business and is inside the brouhaha told me it's simple business: "Look, Savage is the king there. He commands A+ treatment because he's A+ status and the 'Dickeys want to show him a lot of love."

Lots of love indeed.

    1. Ron WHO? as the Doctor often says "nobody's ever heard of him"
The call letter (and intelligence) deficient station is a news flash and traffic station with some fillers on the off hours. Mike was up to #4 nationally even with little TRN. These jokers think they are the s. but they only stink like it.

  4. This is so untrue as to be laughable.

A number of employee have private spots, most of them one floor below. The last spot available is a handicapped spot next top the elevator, which is Savage's spot when he actually does come in. It's not actually a handicap spot anymore, but rather a guest spot. His name is on it, like so many other spots.

When he does come in, no one cares. KSFO is on the same floor as KNBR, and no one knows who he is. KGO doesn't even see him, although he will prance around the building hoping someone notices him. It's a lot more sad than anything else.

Once again, Rich, you should probably stop taking your cues from the same guy putting you on his show.

No one cares about this issue at 55 Hawthorne. His name is rarely uttered.

    1. I work there too and actually, what Rich writes is 100% true--I don't know where you park but I know Savage has the best spot.

      Delete
    2. He has the best spot because it was the last spot, and is actually dual use for visitors. Every other spot was assigned except for the handicapped spot, which he's in. You work there? No one ever speaks about Savage, unless you're the one person speaking to others. No one cares. Another RL415 fabrication because he has nothing else to report.

    3. As long as the rest of us don't have to see or interact with this sociopath I could care less that the company is paying for his lunches or giving him a spot close the studio so he can scurry away on the handful of times he's in the building. Savage has about an 18 month self-immolation clock so he'll do something so egregious in the next few months that he'll implode anyway... who cares.

    5. I've been listening to Dr. Savage from day 1. The local hacks were jealous then, they are jealous now. It brings joy to my heart to know that he's back on KSFO. For some reason KSFO took him off the air and the local hacks denigrated him openly. All those local hacks are gone and Dr. Savage is back. And how. My son, a sergeant in the USMC, loves him. My daughter, an engineering student at Cal, loves him. That tells it all. The dude has talent, heart and integrity. Look at what he's done for Marine's and that US Army Lt. who the bush-bots and obama-ites tried to destroy. Dr. Savages' detractors don't have any idea what humbleness is. He's not a coward selling his soul for 15 cents. He's successful and he earned it.... "that's all".

    6. Well said Avelina, Savage is the World Heavyweight Champion of broadcasting. There are no contenders. I find it absolutely hilarious people pretend he don't exist.

    8. When Savage was on KSFO before, he was not taken off the air, he and management could not agree on the terms of his contract. Like him, dislike him, hate him, feel neutral about him (which I do for the most part) he is difficult to deal with, probably Cumulus management gave him the best parking spot to keep him away from other hosts, so he can't insult them. I don't care for his politics, but I know people who do, my problem with Savage, is he has a very hard time saying something nice about anybody, he gets very personal and attack people on their looks and other irrelevant things, that come off as very small minded, especially for a an intelligent guy like Savage.

  5. Mr Savage is hardly in the league of legendary talk show hosts from the Luckoff/Swanson era (Jim Eason, Lee Rogers, Gene Burns, Pete Wilson among others) and none of these guys had the inferiority complex and outsize ego of Savage. The other difference is that you can sell sponsorships for great talent.

    1. Gene Burns had the finest food and wine radio show I had ever heard in my life. I listened to him whenever I had the chance. He was a pro. You could tell. It really came through.

I like Savage but honestly, he's no different from any one of those old guys from New York or Philly who've seen it all and spend their time talking about the old days. I knew people in Ohio like that, older guys who had made their money years ago and spent time telling those who would listen war stories about the Depression, the War, the early fifties with all the growth and how it all started to crumble in the late sixties and early seventies. No disrespect but I've known people like that for years. There have been oh, so many decisions I've made because of what they taught me. More than you will ever know.

      Delete
    2. 10:41 you are so right about Savage. Can you imagine Gene Burns stooping so low as to attack his distractors on looks. He use to call Jim Eason (who I didn't agree with and hardly ever listened to) an old man in a pajamas, and they were on the same station. Yeh Savage certainly has a lot of class. Not.

    3. I see that I am over a month behind with my comment. I came to see if there is news about Barbara Simpson. A replacement for her was on yesterday 5/3 and a terrible one at that. He never identified the show and when I looked at the KSFO website where it displays the current host's picture it was not there.
As for past show hosts, I still grieve for Lee Rodgers who was the best and he certainly didn't deserve the shoddy replacement that is doing the morning show. I never listen to the KSFO morning show any more. In fact KSFO would be packing it in if it were not for Savage, John Batchelor, and Simpson, the Rabbi, and Tanem on the weekend. So what is happening with Simpson?

  6. I sense some less than candid portraying of the facts. When has Rich said anything nice about Cumulus (and for good reason) Cumulus upper management shows Savage a lot of love, yeh right, I'm sure they do but that love is most surely tied to the $$$ that Savage ratings bring in. If and when the ratings drop, so much certainly the "love" Cumulus shows Savage.

  10. Even if totally true, so what. People with power get certain privileges. Obama vacations at only the best resorts, his wife does too even without the Pres (see Spain trip and Hawaii for 50th). Hollywood actors get $50,000 goody bags. Howard Stern has his own private bathroom and his own limo driver for years. Google owners have their own private jets. This is how it works. Work hard, earn lots of money, and someday someone will also kiss your ass and give you perks for free even though you make so much money that you could buy these things 10,000 times over. The fact is, no one at KGO/KSFO/KNBR is in a class like Michael Savage. He is national. He has best sellers. He brings in $$$$ from everywhere. If he is an a-hole, don't listen. If he is an a-hole and you work with him and he treats you poorly, call him out for it. No job is worth your dignity and no one should demean you, no matter what. Stand up for yourself and don't kow-tow. Then, and only then, would behaviour change. Otherwise it is enabling. But to be jealous? Of what? A miscreant, a miserable SOB with few friends but lots of money and parking space and a toilet of gold?

  11. Hey! Do your job, know your content, have something to say and you can get to where Mike Savage is today. There's no big mystery here. He's revolutionized radio since he entered the market in mid 1994. Before, we had the likes of Ronn Owens thinking that was the best local SF radio had to offer. We now know, it isn't true, that Owens is irrelevant to a politically savvy listernship.

    1. We don't have good radio here anymore. It died with the passing of the Swanson/Luckoff era at KGO. I'm as conservative as anyone you may have the pleasure or displeasure of meeting but I'm not a moron and I know what quality sounds like. Trust me, that was quality. It was solid and smooth and I miss it.

KSFO always seemed amateurish to me. Even when Lee was there, the pound for pound, serious meat and potatoes polished professional sound I was used to from back east was never there and damn sure isn't there now. Jay Severin or Mark Davis would feast on Brian Sussman like my dog chewing up a raw steak. I'm sorry, it's true.

I'll tell you another operation that all this consolidation and instability has ruined. How about KRLD in Dallas? They had that same, solid, smooth, bulletproof, "everyone's been there for years" sound in the mid nineties when we first moved to Dallas from NE Ohio. I swear, they had a bumper at top of the hour going into news that was just amazing, sounded like a voice of God. Bad thunderstorm coming in? KRLD. Ice storm tomorrow? KRLD. Reception? No problem. You could pick it up on your dental work.

I sound like an old man but I'm telling you, I despise what's happened over the past five years. That's not intended as a partisan slap. It's just an observation.

  12. This unfortunate habit of catering to big-ego driven on air personalities is not unusual. It of course is unfortunate that narcissists such as Michael Savage have to remind us of how far radio has fallen, especially in the last two decades. Some of the crap that currently passes for 'entertainment' or 'information' on major market radio stations here in the Bay Area absolutely astounds me. But then, so too does a human race that today has become so self-involved, (especially here in the U.S.) and at the same time is also somewhat blind to what's really happening. I'm so lucky to have had the chance to have worked heavily in radio from the late 1960s well into the 21st century. Young people today just getting into the radio profession have no idea how much more fun and creative it used to be, and how few corporate weasels around compared to now!

  13. I'm sure it's just a rumor, nothing to it, but I heard yes, he has a Visiting Pedicurer come to his office once in a while. She brings patouli oil ,and about 100 guppies with her, to complete the foot treatments. The way those little fishees nibble the calouses, well, it just amazes.

  14. So, in summation: Savage gets to park in a handicapped spot and someone resents that. Hardly newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is hardly a discussion of whether or not Savage is good at doing radio.

It's a discussion about what Rich wrote, which across the board is largely false:

Parking Spot - Last one available. Others have spots with a sign in front of them. Building owned the Handicapped Spot, so it's his. That said, he's never in the building, so it is often used by others.

Studio - Wrong again. He uses the same studio as the other KSFO hosts.

Food - No idea if he has a per diem food budget, but no one hear is getting a food cart, or having food catered. That's a hilarious suggestion that's wrong.

Envy - No one sees Savage. He's never here. If he was, no one would notice. The sales people are usually out of the office, and the rest of the people are kids in baseball hats working at KNBR, who don't know who he is.

In sum total, this is largely untrue.

That story is well over a month old, and he's referencing your site, regarding the story you wrote.

  20. I think Dr. Savage is great. I actually found him on the radio after getting rid of all TV from the house back in 2011. The Savage Nation is something I look forward to every day because there is always intelligent commentary. I'm a female primary care physician and an immigrant to this country, having come in through NYC in 1962. Life as an immigrant arriving without any money or family has been a struggle, so I identify with Dr. Savage's stories about how difficult it was for his family as immigrants to this country. Dr. Savage brings intelligence, education and humor to his radio show, something lacking in almost all other venues. I think the negative commentary posted here is sour grapes and very simply an attempt to belittle Dr. Savage and make him look bad.

  21. Awesome! Savage is king of kings! I bow down to this man. He saved me from the mental disease (liberalism progressive) when I was young. I've been a loyal listener for 15 years. And realize he is a American jewel. Praise the savage nation!

He is from a working class family who built himself from basically his own incredible intelligence and need to prove himsefl because of the unfortunate condition of his brother. He is respectful of the memory of hs parents and it was a pleasure to listen to his mother who appeared on the show several times to discuss family issues.

  24. This is my first encounter with Rich Lieberman, so forgive any ignorance on my part. As an old, and I mean old, Savagette I seldom miss his show. He has some bad habits that could be improved upon but he makes up for them with knowledge in a variety of fields, something that is missing from most other talk shows. It is sad to witness the deterioration of KSFO's morning show with the frantic screaming and vacant laughing, one wonders who can tolerate that for any length of time. KSFO is fortunate to retain the talents of hosts like Savage, Barbara Simpson, John Batchelor. Lee Rodgers was the top for many years, and many of us had fervent hopes he would one day return the dignity, acuity and intelligence to the morning show. Alas he left this realm for good, may he rest in peace. So during the regular week our household's radios are silent until noon when Savage comes on and go silent again until Batchelor starts in the evening.

  26. If anyone should know about being jealous it's Savage. He can't stand Bill O'Reilly and the fact that O'Reilly owns him. Savage is a good entertainer but after that he comes across as an angry and bitter old man who has realized that life has passed him by.

  27. 10:09, PM, I sympathize with your KSFO morning blues. I used to feel the same way. I emailed Rich about this maybe two years back, I was very down about the deterioration of that program. Rich gave me almost brotherly advice. He simply said "Don't listen to them anymore expecting the old program. Shop around." And so I did. I found 910 and 960.
I still listen to a few ksfo programs here and there, but I stopped listening to the morning show because it only serves to annoy and irritate me. KSFO is appealing to a different group of listeners now, a group I dont belong to. That is their right. A business does what it has to in order to survive, even if surviving means barely treading water in a basement, but Cest La Vie. Meanwhile, I still have Barbara Simpson our erstwhile Queen of Logic and Compassion. I still have Kim Komando on Sunday with her computer show. I dont really care about computers, but I like the fun and the joy in Kim's delivery. I still have Rabbi Lapin, even though I think the station is trying to make him quit, by moving his hours ever earlier into the Un-Godly Hours...Check out 910am or 960am. one thing I do like on ksfo is the Red Eye Radio at 11pm weeknights. Two guys, one mike, as they chat about the events and issues of the day. Both have a great sense of humor and justice, if you can imagine that! Raise a hot cup of Tea with me today in a toast, as we celebrate the knowledge that the Age of Obama and all his minions is now more than half over!!

  30. From the moment I first heard Savage, I knew the man was on to something. I was living and working in San Francisco (at 55 Hawthorne and KCBS), attending SFSU, and a card carrying apolitical Clinton'esta...see the following:

    http://dailycaller.com/2014/03/25/american-university-students-cant-name-a-single-u-s-senator/

Then I heard Michael Savage after the 2000 presidential election, systematically and eloquently laying out the facts of the moment. What resonated the most with me was when he asked the question, (paraphrasing) "Why are these people (democrats) so desperate for power that they will file a law suit to suppress the vote of the men and women who protect our right to do so ourselves?

Having served in the military, that question really made me think twice about why I was a registered Democrat. It was such a profound moment, having someone present an argument that made me question everything I passively took for granted in the past. My eyes were now open. I wanted to hear and seek out the truth.

I now knew there was a reason the reporters at KCBS would consistently present only one cut from the AP news feeds, leaving out cuts that failed to support or detracted from the liberal paradigm. I knew why they so despised the name Michael Savage when I made any mention of the man in the news room. True, most in the KNBR studios wouldn't know him, because that place is full of boys in backwards ball caps, who were never taught that part of being a man in this country is being a steward of our freedoms; that a government of the people, by the people, for the people, needs men who know more about the bill of rights than the Monday morning box scores.

Yet these are the people responsible for keeping the public informed. When people who control the information, keep the entire story from the masses, that is dishonest. When the boys in backwards ball caps know nothing and care nothing about their God given liberties, their ignorance spreads like a cancer. Quite frankly I was disappointed in myself at first, for overlooking this phenomenon for so long. But, I've managed to wake up, in no small part due to the talented Michael Savage.

And so it is that we as American find ourselves in such a sad state; where there is no dialog, only animosity between those who hunger for truth and those who think ignorance is bliss. I find that despite leaving the democrat party, going off to war and trying to finish graduate school with some level of sanity (Thank God it's psychology), I am mostly troubled by those who've no idea that the leaders they follow have no interest in their right to individual liberty, while those who do are so despised for telling them the truth.

There is where I think lies the source of liberal angst and the gnashing of teeth; upon hearing the words of Michale Savage a liberal comes face to face with the fact that they've been living a lie. Some have the courage to change, while most will continue sipping their free trade coffee and smiling at the sun, saying, "ignorance is bliss!"

When he talks about Michael Savage, Michael Savage, and more Michael Savage, he puts my foot to sleep. What is the score on his web page? 14 News stories, 4 "I'm the greatest! y'all suck!" boasts, and 4 plugs for interviews of Savage, where he can be heard, and all about his book. Egotism and bashing rivals are major turnoffs. I do not like major personalities sniping at each other. Obama may love it. But I do not

  34. Doctor Savage likes to discuss his childhood in his book Train Tracks and the fact that his mom gave him a suit which started his caeer on the way to expressing his individual concept that he was more perceptive than most people, could express his intelligence and be noticed, and he is driven by the need to be twice better than average because of the loss of his brother.

He has a beautiful voice, is knowledgable, and seems very kind, basically. I can see how he could appear raspy sometimes because of the jealous remarks of one talk host, a friend of Hannity who referred to Savage in derogatory terms because of his stature of less than six feet tall. It turned out to be reverse psychology at work then which I doubt Hannity's friend intended, and the comment appearedd to evoke sympathy.

I look forward to hearing Dr. Savage interview Dr. Wattenburg about subjects Wattenburg understands but does not discuss.

Others who are materialistic and with more money in the bank than they can spend will go to the other place, and not ascend to the heights of those who are true to their faith. Some of those you mentioned in the last paragraph would not hesitate to use another's intellectual property without their permission, but Doctor Savage is ethical and is an original.

  38. Savage's fatal personality flaw is his megalomania and extreme narcissism. Inside he must feel like such a little man to need to constantly self promote his imagined greatness and vilify his colleagues. Did you know he is a greater writer than Jack London?

  39. The (original) KSFO/KGO(TV&Radio) so-called Talent, Staff and Management have shown they aren't adult enough to 'deal' with Mike's Success, even when it was only local charts he was crushing. Cumulus is much smarter than Mickey Mouse (& Luckoff) were in treating Michael Savage and running his show.
We aren't talking yocal nobodies like the Bimbo in the Bunker, the Boss's Wife, the Taxi Driver, the Mustached Gun Nut, or even the Jazz Man. Except for the Blonde who went Weekend Warrior, the rest either Quit or were Fired.

    1. The lady in the Bunker is very intelligent and articulate, although her extremist views along with her former alliance with the under water genius would most likely prevent her from seeking public office. The wife of the boss never did have any credibility, just exploited causes that helped he own best interest. I miss Gene Burns and John Rothman, two very professional hosts.

  40. I listen to Savage occasionally. I used to listen to him all the time. I loved his stories of growing up in NYC and of his mother and father. Often he was right on politically, but I really got tired of care for his personal attacks on other people's looks. I remember one time he called Greta van Sustern "Scarface" and I was so turned off by that comment. that I went from an avid listener to an occasional listener.

    1. Those personal attacks seem inappropriate, just as the Friday night Ray Charles fan sometimes refers to Doctor Savage as "the midget".
