Ronn Owens Tells Herb Caen's Daughter-in-Law He's The New Herb Caen

From Linda, a reader:

Rich,

Did you catch the second hour of Mattress Man's show yesterday's (Wednesday) a.m.?

He had on Melissa Griffin Caen (daughter-in-law of Herb), and he began his discussion with her to confide his "guilty pleasure": he has "literally kept count" of the number of times since Herb died he's been told he's the NEW Herb Caen--11 times! He considers this the highest compliment anyone could pay him. 11 times! He's kept count.

Melissa recovers her senses long enough to inquire in response if there are "notches" cut to mark the comments somewhere in his office, but of course that flew over Ronn's head.

It was a jaw dropping moment.

Here's the podcast: the "guilty pleasure" come right away.

  1. thanks for the link. I tuned in the 9am hour when he was stroking his good friend Jack "Family Values" Welch and had to switch to KCBS before I vomited in my car.

I wonder if they have to cover the studio chairs in plastic, because he oozes all over the place. He lost a lot of listeners after the "up to 30" debacle.

  2. I wonder if Melissa, who is a bright young conservative mind, ever met Herb Caen?

    1. Melissa is not conservative ... no sirree...of course she never met Herb because she's fairly new to the city

  3. An insult to a San Francisco legend. What a pompous ass. How can someone who once had a lot of credibility become such a self-serving schmuck? What kind of comeback is Ron Lowenstein going to have now?

  4. Typical Rich.

As mentioned, if Savage did this you'd be mum. Like his comments on air the other day lauding himself. I said if it was Owens you'd be all over it.

    Thanks for proving my point.

I don't care more about one than the other, but you are the furthest thing from objective.

    1. Savage does this all the time! Every few minutes I might add! It's after a few minutes of self-aggrandizement that I hit the off switch. For anyone who thought the 12pm time slot might make a difference in his show, I just want to inform you that it hasn't. I used to like him, but he has become way too narcissistic recently, and in person he has the attention span and listening skills of a knat.

  5. As for Owens, I agree, it's embarrassing.

  6. The Mattress Man still does not get it.

  7. I listened to that segment yesterday, and Ronn's comment was amazingly off the cuff and narcissistic. I really felt kind of sorry for him because it was so embarrassingly weird.

  8. I just listened to it. I'm not even a huge fan of Ronn's show (don't know him otherwise), but you must be out of your heads to take more from that than what it was. It was Ronn being flattered, admitting it, and mentioning it as a guilty pleasure.

Rich, I don't comment much on the site, but you have some serious issues you need to get past. I know a lot of comments get deleted (according to others), and I suspect this one may as well, but seriously, find new enemies. If this is what you're worked up about when it comes to Ronn's show, which is on the air 5 days a week, then you are really grasping at straws.

Did it sound a bit strange? I guess a little. But it seemed more complimentary than anything else.
