Ripping For Ripping Sake--Not; KRON's Darya Dollar Day; KQED; KNBR's Bruce Ego; Papa--Warriors; NBC Bay Area 'Investigative Unit' Ad Package Irks; Tuesday Shuffle

People love it when I rip people. In fact, the more negative, the more raw, the more abrasive, the more popular but it has to be something or some particular event or incident to bring out elite ripitus, that's what I'll call it.

Contrary to popular opinion I don't rip just to rip. Why bother-- for shock value? Old news.

Ronn Owens had a nice interview with Alan Dershowitz the other day, (about time); it was interesting, pointed and timely--like the good old days. I'm not a Ronn fan anymore but when he does good I'll point it out.

On Tuesday morning, Gary Radnich had a terrific 7-minute phoner-interview with Jeannie Ashe, the wife of Arthur Ashe. I wish the interview lasted longer because it was both riveting and revealing. Ms. Ashe isn't the usual sports-talk radio zeitgeist but this was a nice diversion and better yet, Radnich and his partner, (Larry Krueger), did a good job rather than the usual banal sports hosts.

*If Darya Folsom is looking for a massive raise from her current, low, six-figure deal she might be in for a surprise or maybe a good cat fight. Remember, Darya, it's KRON.

*Meanwhile, over at KQED, the power guys with the big suits who like to eat at Tadich are trying diligently to work out a potential problem with someone's ego in the radio division. It's not that big a deal--yet.

*Tom Tolbert, it's widely assumed, will be handed the Warriors' TV Comcast analyst position next year after Jim Barnett retires. Only Tolbert doesn't necessarily want that gig because he has a family life and NBA travel , while splendid, isn't exactly nirvana for a guy who likes his current gig and isn't thrilled about airplanes.

*Damon Bruce check-your-ego dept: Hey look, Jesus Christ, you didn't reinvent the wheel. You managed to become a decent sports-talk personality in a rather bland market so please, stop telling everyone how goddamned great you are--like I said, you're a .275 hitter who thinks he's Willie Mays.

*The mood at KTVU is not as cheery as the GM, the ND and PR guy would make it out to be and it has nothing to do with NameGate...it has a lot to do with a boatload of story counts; an overzealous reporter who isn't one of the boys and likes to tell everyone that the big boys love him. They don't--besides, said reporter might be out the door soon any day now.

*If Greg Papa were to eventually become the Warriors' new TV guy, I wouldn't be shocked. Then again, the Raiders might be. (Don't worry, Raiders, he'd be doubling down).

*NBC Bay Area, (KNTV) is busy looking at another extravagant radio/TV/print package highlighting the "Investigative Unit." So far, there's been a little grumbling from the inside-newsroom people but if yet another tidy sum of ad money is bestowed on this unit, you can bet your teleprompter's ass the mood gets ever testier.

*I love Matier and Ross but that A's-to-SF story was a neatly, timely leak put forth by the Lew Wolff PR dept. The A's, as Andy Dolich once said, "have been moving for 48 years." Advantage, Oakland.

*Da Lin: just can't get enough of him.

*Oh, by the way, Dan Rosenheim, if you're going to tell more and more people not to talk to me, more and more people are still talking to me--damn!

*KPIX staffers had a rough time the other day: the 18,000 managers all want personalized mobile-weather vans equipped with pictures of Milt Kahn, (inside joke.)

*I'm going to tell you all about my radio deal, don't worry I'll be really, really, --I mean really, realllly expressive and blunt.

*STFU: Ryan Scott.

*Double STFU: "Secret Asian Man"--Great stuff, KGO--way to invigorate the local scene.

  1. Damon Bruce thinks he's good because he lives here. He's harmless, and CBS probably likes that. He's "good enough", and yes I am quoting someone.

Greg Papa not calling NBA basketball, especially considering he doesn't even call College games.

  2. Damon Bruce & Greg Papa are both decidedly small-time potatoes, they wouldn't last 30 seconds in a truly competitive market like New York.

    1. Has there been a bigger fail than Milt Kahn? I remember his report on the NFL draft went something like "OK, today, the 49ers and Raiders drafted some running backs and , uh, linebackers but I don't care about that"....a sick, sick joke!

    1. Yes, but by letting this one go through he acts like he allows all comments. Get it? It might be called irony, but I'm not sure.

  6. The morning Queen at KRON will be re-signed for decent money. Darya is good, and has also started a trend for Bay Area news babes. Lets see who can wear the tightest shirt! Sadly, it works.

  7. Curious, what has happened to supposed "big meeting" of Fox/NBC/KRON/etc for bid/swap? Been away and haven't seen much chat about it lately.

One of the "Investigative trucks" from Ch 11 frequently comes to the retail center where I spend a lot of time. Yes, they actually have their own trucks! (Says NBC INVESTIGATIVE UNIT on the side with a big picture of the gang of idiots.) And get this--it's a Mercedes Benz truck Leather seats, sunroof. Nice.

    1. We Investigate is We Suck. Locally, this disaster can be linked to Kevin Keeshan the ex-KGO Ayatollah turned NBC edit boy. Splashy promos with the old KGO voice talent won't budge the needle. Remember, Keeshan wrecked KGO afternoons with gems like the 4pm Newscast and 7 Live. Three strikes your out.

  9. Scratching my head the other night over KTVU's 10PM news lead... three plus minutes (6 Tivo clicks) on the opening of an Indian casino in the north bay. Riddle solved during a later commercial break, featuring an ad for that same casino. This morning's news had another "story" on the joint, followed no doubt by additional paid commercials.

    Nice direction we're heading.

    2. Darya Folsom already has job security, so long as the ND stays there. She should count her blessings.

    3. Observant One @ 8:00 PM -- Since I've had Tivo for more than a decade, maybe I have missed the trend. But I provided a specific example in my post, you didn't. Feel free to share an example of your own observations.

  10. I agree with your viewpoint on Ronn's interview with Dershowitz the other day. It was effective as well, as I then went out and purchased Dershowitz's latest book. Unfortunately, the absence of compelling talk radio is still a major issue in my home. ;(

  11. Damon Bruce was the cool thing to listen to at lunch time a few years ago. It's just too bad that over the last 2 years or so, he has become the exactly what he used to be so good at criticizing: the winey, self-entitled, spoiled brat that knows a lot of useless facts but they're still useless facts.

His credibility about hit rock bottom when he went on another one of his Sharks monologues about how nobody cares about the team and even if they did interest would fizz out anyways because they're always the bridesmaid and never the bride when it comes to the NHL playoffs. Now, I could care less if he rips the Sharks because I actually don't care about hockey. However, when those guys from Bay Area Sports Guy criticized him on Twitter, he actually invited them in studio to make nice and smooth the fences over. The guy who criticizes other people for being spineless actually sure didn't appear to be too strong in the spine department on that day.

The poor guy just tries to hard since he got spurned from 680 for a second time. Have you heard him on the 49ers pregame with Krueger? It's almost uncomfortable to listen to Krueger have to hold back his laughter at Damon's overzealous rants and "authoritative" on-air persona. Speaking of Krueger, Damon's jealous digs at Krueger's 9-noon counterpart are nothing short of comical. We get it Damon, Gary is everything you want to be but never will be, doesn't mean you still can't be good in your own way.

Damon, lighten up buddy--you're talking about San Jose State, not Alabama.

  12. I don't think that anon 1:47 has been to NYC very often, because if he (she) had, they would see that there are plenty of mediocrities in the Big Apple in the media, maybe even more than out here on the coast.

  13. Come on Rich. Dershowitz and Rooonnnstein are two sides of the same coin. Israel apologists through and through. Petty ass Dershowitz is still butt hurt that Glenn Greenwald has been kicking his ass on wiki leaks and Snowden related issues. Dershowitz is a has been. I'm surprised you find anything those two schmendricks say worthwhile. Btw, heads up to all fine wine connossieours. Legendary wine importer Kermit Lynch from Berkeley will be on Forum tomorrow. Rich, if you ever reach detente with Ronnnnstein I'm through with you. Go ahead censor big daddy. Go ahead.

    1. What a stupid comment, you can't read this blog because Rich might decide to praise Ronn, or just stopping his critic of him. You comment about apologists for Israel sounds very close to being anti semitic, I guess you don't like John Rothmann. Can't someone support Israel or disagree with you without being attacked. I heard the same interview and agree with Rich. When Ronn has a guest on that is interesting he does a good interview. He recently interviewed Jim Hammer, the talked about the case in Sonoma, but other cases as well, again a very good interview.

    2. Dershowitz, an enemy of free speech, is also fraud and a bully. Norman Finkelstein outed him as a fraud --

  18. I really enjoyed Ronn's interview, too, and I think he's had some really good shows on lately. I don't listen every day, but when I do tune in, I stay listening to him. When the news comes on, I turn it to public radio (sorry news dept. I'm a former newsie but...)
