Play Ball

Yesterday...

and Today

There's a whole lot of history in over a hundred years of baseball. I bet a lot of you forget that Al Michaels was in the Giants booth with Lon Simmons in the mid 70's...remember Lindsey Nelson? And the list goes on...Hank Greenwald, David Glass, Ron Fairly, (boo!!--he was a Dodger guy), Ted Robinson--don't forget Gary Park too.

I'm sure I left a few notables out but you'll remind me.

  2. No one will ever beat the tag team duo of Bill King and Lon Simmons with the Oakland A's.

  4. I wasn't yet living in the Bay Area when Harry Caray did the A's. But a lot of my friends who have grown up here (both A's and Giants fans) agree that he was absolutely horrible.

    1. I remember Harry Caray doing the A's in 1970. Really, he was a very good nuts-and-bolts type of announcer, but he was a total homer and this area has never gone for that stuff. He was yet another example of how Charlie Finley totally misjudged the Bay Area...

  5. Ya know, seeing those two homerish dorks in the Panda hats makes me come to this conclusion: Bill Thompson (just the seventh inning, please) wasn't that bad after all. Neither was Art Eckman or Joe Angel or David "Ernie Douglas" Glass (with his glasses, David Glass looked like Ernie Douglas from "My Three Sons").

  6. Don't forget: Bob Elson, Al Helfer, Red Rush and Jim Woods along with the "Ringer Dinger" - Portervile's Monte Moore for the A's, along-side Ray Fosse.

  7. Hey Rich, did you know that in 2003, yours truly, Roxy Bsrnstein, Dave Flemming and Dave Raymond, (later a radio voice for several years for Astros), filled in about 8-10 games each when Jon Miller was out of town doing his ESPN Sunday night TV games? Working with Joe Angel, who was in his second stint for the Giants was a lot of fun. You might remember that in 1977-78, a much younger Joe Angel worked with Lon Simmons for two years, before he headed back east. Joe has worked with the Marlins, Red Sox and now is back with the Orioles, where he has teammed with Frank Manfra for a decade on the radio calls of the Birds' games. The Giants made a wise choice going with Flemming when Joe left. Dave is turning into one of the better radio play by play sportscasters on the west coast. His work on Stanford football is particularly good, and he meshes well with all of the guys on the Giants radio casts. Hard to believe that was ten years ago!
