So, imagine hosting a radio show and getting a text from the PD saying you're doing a crappy job. Or something to that effect.
Well, one of my moles informs me that KGO News and Program director, Paul Hosely, has does precisely that. Both KGO and KSFO too. And it has happened more than once. Moreover, one text made its way to veteran KSFO show host, Melanie Morgan, (this despite the fact that Morgan's ratings have shot up the roof since she returned to the airwaves nearly a year ago).
It's SOP that air talent receive feedback from their respective bosses. It it NOT SOP that one gets a text in the middle of their show. Then again, consider the source. Hosely might be feeling the heat from his boss. KGOne is getting killed. We know that. But I mean, they're really getting killed. Their CUME is declining faster than Facebook stock. They're getting beat to death by everyone and vast effort to get the "younger demo" has failed miserably.
Text that.

Put Melanie's husband back in charge of the store.
ReplyDeleteI don't see anything wrong with that, after all he's the boss and the host probably did suck. Would you post the same if he had called the studio to speak with host during a commercial break?
ReplyDeleteOnly bush league broadcasting texts, phones, sends carrier pigeon notes to, etc., performers during a performance with critical comments. Furthermore, KGO (at least in the past) was well above having middle management coach performers. Jack Swanson would have NEVER communicated with a host during his show other than as part of something intended to be on the air. IMHO, the PD and the ASS. PD are unqualified to do what they pretend to do.
DeleteHey Hosely: how about sending a text to Jared Hart asking him to stop bringing in the NY comedian from hell? That would be a great start. Then send another text requesting more Christine Craft and Stacy Taylor
ReplyDelete11:24 AND 12:35 YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE MONEY, BUT WHO IS LISTENING, NO ONE WHO CARES ABOUT THOSE OF US, THAT ARE USE TO INTELLIGENT, PROFESSIONAL HOSTS WHO CAN MASTER THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, WITHOUT USING WORDS LIKE "SUCK" AND "PISSED OF" ALL THE TIME.
DeleteAgree with the 10:19pm post.
DeleteEvery time I hear the words "sucks" and "pissed off"
only tells me the host is unable to articulate his views.
This is especially glaring at KNBR 680.
Before cell phones, some PD's would call on-air jocks on the hot line which triggered a flashing light in the studio. Make no mistake, this was meant to strike the fear of God into the person on the air. It was rarely used as a way of communicating important information which could usually wait until after the shift anyway. This is how PD's intimidate the people who work for them.
ReplyDeleteDidn't Mike Urban famously say that Lee Hammer called him mid show and tell him he hated his show?
ReplyDeleteI kid you not. Tim Montemanure (pile of dung in Spanish) ended his show today talking about people who pee in swimming pools. Good way to attract the young demographic! Up next: people who've taken a dump at the beach.
ReplyDeleteOn a positive note, Montemanure is off tomorrow so C. Craft will fill in. Here is hoping there's no Mirkarimi talk on her part.
Thanks for the Christine Craft alert. I only listen when she is on. The rest of the lot are simply ghastly and I've tried, I've tried.
DeleteNext thing you know Kgo will be writing a blog and talking about their former radio career
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean I can text Ronn Owens whenever he annoys me? Man, that would be like having a super power. Well, for about another six months anyway. ;)
ReplyDeleteI have unlimited text messaging on cell phone plan. I would be very busy texting Ronn if it were possible. I hope to God that News Talk 910 AM is too broke to pick him up after he leaves KGO.
Delete@ 1:33 PM Six Months?? Ronn is gone Labor day weekend
DeleteI AM the younger demo, 26 year old male in the East Bay. KGOne is now the most annoying station ever. It's no wonder their ratings are crap, their content is crap! I don't know why they thought the younger demo would be down to listen to recycled news over and over and over again. Complete failure. PS: I'm lovin' Len Tillem on KNEW!
ReplyDeleteYou are 26 and are not impressed by Ryan Scott's heavy use of the word ”sucks”!? Shocking. How about the promo guy they use from KNBR? He is not appealing to the youngsters? Karel claims young folks like you are flocking to listen to him.
DeleteI can give social psychological reasons on why their new niche sucks. But I am not getting paid from Paul. Hey, Paul, You f--king suck. Give your job back to Jack Swanson.
DeleteKarel is a hot mess.
DeleteThe wacky world if radio.
ReplyDeletePat Thurston just ended her show and did not do her usual chat with Karel who follows her. Obviously she heard what that jerk said about her. Go Pat go!
ReplyDeleteOr Karel pre-taped his show again.
DeleteSo what's the endgame at KGO?
ReplyDeleteThey must have one. You don't change a multi hundred million dollar asset without one.
Just wondering.
Golly gee! How's that new format working over at KGO? lol
ReplyDeleteThe reason why Karel is still there. The KGO management is waiting for a train wreak to happen on the air.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of Paul Hosely, ask the crew at KCBS what do they think of him?
Every TV ND top lines in studio anchors during the shows... what's the big deal if Hosley texts?
ReplyDeleteTexting the on-air people or calling them on the 'hot-line' to intimidate them or interrupt them during programs is unprofessional and should never be done. If a PD of News Director has an issue with an on-air person, they should sit down with that person in their office behind closed doors after the air shift is over, and have the decency to talk face to face.
ReplyDeletePutting the 'fear of god' into a broadcaster not only smacks of unprofessional behavior, it's simply mean spirited. But broadcasting is a whore business anyway, so I guess this kind of profession attracts people with few social graves.
But isn't it truly amazing how so many people in broadcast management who work in positions to hire and fire the talent have never worked a day of their lives on the air? They have no clue as to what it takes to be a broadcaster, yet they're the ones deciding who will be on the air. That's like hiring some cluless dolt off the street to manage a baseball team. "Hey Buster, I don't like the way you're approaching your hitting. Do it my way or else I'll fire you!"
I guess that's why idiots like Maureen Langden ('The NY Witch'), and Karel are hired.
Imagine hiring doctors or lawyers who have not been trained or schooled in their professions. How about bringing in an airline pilot who has never flown a plane before? But that's what happens these days in radio with the hiring of rank amateurs and baffoons by these 'know-it-all' management types.
It's no surprise. First Dungerhole started treating his sales department like children and basically drove out all the talent and now it seems as if he is having the program director treat veteran broadcasters like 10 year olds by conducting air check sessions while on the air. When will this desperate little old man give it a rest? Dungerhole needs to get a clue. Because at this rate, in 6 months he will have no staff for him to rule over by fear and intimidation.
ReplyDeleteI'm confused...who is this guy Dungerhole, or is it Bungerhole?
ReplyDeleteNo one on Rich's blog seems to like him. What's he done that so henious?
You know, as a radio personality myself, this post just pisses me off. You show CONSTANTLY that you have NO IDEA what goes on in this industry...
ReplyDeleteYou mean to tell me, that it is WRONG of a PD to send a text to a personlity who is on air, "sucking" or making a mistake?
How so?
Don't you think that is the PD's way of letting them know, so the PERSONLITY doesnt sound like an idiot?
My PD text messages me from time to time, and I'll tell you, I'd prefer knowing that I'm doing something wrong THEN, rather than my boss wait 2 hours... allowing me to continue to mess up.
You're clearly grasping at straws to try to not like Hosley, find a new target with something that actually makes sense.
I'd be curious to find out how many texts Hosely sent David Weintraub during that infamous show of his. It is amusing that Weintraub produces most of the talk shows on weekends. It probably explains the shitty bumper music. BTW Thurston will be off next weekend at Disneyland. Hopefully Jared Hart does not pull another unknown comedian out of his ass to fill in.
DeleteHa, ha, ha. Yes, exactly. People who run the show have never sat in the anchor/host's chair. And no, not every news director top lines during a show. As the above stated, the ones with any class wait until a post show meeting to discuss issues. To my knowledge, only KRON top lines during the show and puts fear into the anchors and weather people. Low class operation ran by low class managers. Guess KGO is now the KRON of radio.
ReplyDeleteHey 6:30am...guess what? Not all of us who work in radio like to be interrupted by text messages or phone calls from douche bag PDs who have no clue what it takes to go on the air. Their little mind games and ego tripping are unnecessary and create nothing but tension and drama. If a PD has an issue with someone's work, they should wait until after that person's shift is over, and call them in to their offide and talk with them behind close doors, man to man. Doing it the other way is chicken-sh...! I agree with 10:03 pm, it's not professional and creates a bad working relationship and a contentious atmosphere. Not the way to build good morale!
ReplyDeleteRich - you missed the big picture here which is that enough hateful and evil people live in the bay area to boost ratings of station featuring the truly loathsome M.Morgan.
ReplyDeletetop lines = definition please?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
(Is this where the director talks into the ear of the on air talant? isn't this usually done during commericals?)
