KTVU goes Futuristic in New News Set

Finally.

KTVU's new digs.

Star Wars meets Broadcast News. I like it.

A multi-platform main news desk with a coordinate along-side. Plus, a sleek weather center complete with accompanying desk and HD monitors and wood-paneled centers.

Cool.

  1. Heather Holmes would look great in front of an old, hanging paint tarp. What a lovely woman she is....

  2. Unless you are talking about KNBR or Radnich i stop checking this blog. Only 2nd view this month.

  3. What is the difference from the old set? You can barley tell here but on camera while zoomed in the background looks exactly the same, no viewer will notice any difference. Too dark, I prefer the new KPIX and KNTV sets.

  4. I think it looks great.

  5. Let's talk about KRON for a min. They put a stanley roberts story as their TOP STORY at 6pm, people living inside freeways. Are you joking? You complain about their news mgmt, clearly they have no news judgement either!

  6. Nice looking set, but can't they tone it up on their newcasts and quit trying to pump network shows. Last night, they sent a reporter to Alcatraz, of course to do a tie-in with their network show, "Alcatraz", "a huge hit" (bad second in it's timeslot to Two and a Half Men) Just cheesy.

  7. doesn't the desk look rather like a glossy costco coffin? what is the history of anchor desks anyway..are they supposed to signify stability and credibility? the prow of a boat? s ship of fools?anybody?

  8. That's new?. Looks like a typical huge KTVU newsdesk, bridge background..and weather to the left.
They should just go all FOX news..seats,woman in miniskirts..cheap,and draws ratings.

  9. Radnich today- within 40 minutes he described ( I counted) 5 different people of topic as " A nice guy,"A really nice guy" "What a nice guy" etc. I'm not sure why he needs to preface with testimonials. He's put clamps on Krueger..and Larry does need them. A least the old guy wants to go out known as a nice guy.

  11. They put the dough saved from Debro's salary to good use!

  12. Radnich traded the Jag up to a Bentley? eh,why not?. At his age he can't take it with him and so what if he's taken paycuts?..investments help. He didn't ingratiate himself with the wealthy for nothing. It's how America rolls..Royce.

  13. Heather Holmes is in my dreams. Also, Rosemary Orozco. 2 of the hottest hotties around.

  14. It's amazing how many set changes there have been over the years for all the stations.

  15. Your right #2 Heather looks hot on set or out in the field!

  16. Do you think people at home care or even notice? Its like a Taj Mahal for the management...

  17. A much smarter looking news desk. Flat screen monitors below the rise and the camera angle makes it a clean look. Even Frank commented on the new digs on the news.

I've notice a few more mistakes on the weekday news, wrong video, camera cues and the mispronunciation of words - let's tidy up a first class news operation.

  18. Since I've seen several posts about Heather Holmes, I have to ask; what do people see in here? Her face looks pinched in to me, and she's just not really that attractive. Not an uggo, but definitely not a hottie, and really not even "cute" to me. On KTVU, the anchors I find more attractive are Gasia and Julie Haener. Allie Rasmus in the field is pretty fine looking, too.

  19. re: 3:34pm, a lot of people find gasia and julie attractive also. a lot of people don't. to each his own. the one who gets me is darya from ch 4. anyone who finds that hag attractive needs glasses!
and to answer rich's post at the top, this new news set doesn't look all that different from any other news set. they're all sort of morphing into the same aesthetic. only ch 7 does anything unique with the giant window to the world behind their news desk. i like watching the live picture behind the morning news. i don't have to wait until the weather segment to see if its sunny downtown.

  20. The evening news the other night with Heather Holmes had some unprofessional cuts and mistakes, cues all wrong. Uncharacteristic for KTVU, usually a standard-bearer for broadcast standards....

  21. 3:51, 3:34 here. Totally agree with you about the equine Darya!

  22. re: 3:51 "only ch 7 does anything unique with the giant window to the world behind their news desk"

uhhh.. don't PIX and NBC do the exact same thing? 2s new set looks like a bridge from old world to new.. pretty ballin if you ask me. and as a lighting dude myself, it SLAYS every other station's lighting

  23. Rich, this set is way more "Star Trek" than "Star Wars". I'm surprised you can't tell the difference!

  24. Memo to KTVU Management: Your newscast is oldOldOLD. The set and the entire presentation (including tired anchors) reminds me of the mid eighties. I don't understand the comments liking the new set. Too much wood (or faux wood?) and take a look at the wide shots--who needs to see that large, deep desk top?? The anchors look so far away from the front of the desk. I tuned in last night to see the new set--they still use full screen, static visuals! The opening seems unchanged and isn't it about time that that Zorro logo is retired?

    1. As for the last question--a minor detail to many, but interesting. First, KTUV could go the way of WNYW, KTTV, and all the others, simply rebrand itself as "Fox 2 News" and adopt the "cube" logo and all-American red-and blue design. But then it would look like every other Fox affliate and lose all ties with its impressive past,

I vote to keep things as they are. Sure, a lot of the people are gone and things aren't what they used to be (and in truth the newscast is kind of dull), but what's wrong with hanging on to your history and tradition?

  25. You are just noticing the continuing list of gaffes in KTVU's news productions? I've been commenting on it for a long time and have even contacted them about it. Their news productions are a mess and have been since last summer or late spring. Did something change? The new set looks like the old one except for the flat screen. I watch KGO TV more than anything and KPIX at 10pm. I even watch KRON now on the weekends. KTVU has become amateur hour. They were stupid to fire Debro. I think they are trying to race to the bottom. I'm still mad they let Randy Shandobil go. He was the best political reporter period. Let's face it, since Richmond retired it has not been the same. And since what's his name retired in the morning, the morning news show has no focus. They seem to have gone out of their way to mess up a good station.

  26. Looks like every other new local news set ever built since the Nineties.

    1. Very true. At every station in every market. In fact they are all so much alike that I am starting to think well of the 1970s look: a stunningly plain desk (not intended to look like rich wood), with the anchors sitting at considerable distance from each other, and a simple photograph or slide behind them against a stark background, The main focus was the story, told in greater detail without need for splashy graphics or a pulsating corner bug.

  27. I really like Frank, but lately, he's been mispronouncing words, adding words that don't make sense and correcting himself. Happens during each broadcast. It's so frequent, I've been calling them out as: "Pulling a Takoda." Frank, slow down and don't overrun your script!
