Occupy Oakland's general strike dominates the news cycle

A protester sleeps under a blanket at the Occupy Oakland encampment Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, in Oakland, Calif. Oakland is bracing for Wednesday's citywide general strike, a hastily planned and ambitious action called by Occupy protesters a day after police forcibly removed their City Hall encampment last week. The union representing Oakland's police officers, who had a violent clash with Occupy Wall Street protesters last week, has written an open letter to residents, pointing out that the officers are also part of 'the 99 percent.' The letter also questions the mayor's decision to give city workers the day off to participate in a Wednesday strike that seeks to shut down the Port of Oakland.

Suffice to say, barring a natural disaster or some other gargantuan news event, Occupy Oakland's general strike will dominate the news cycle not just locally, but indeed nationally and beyond.

In addition to all the local crews, (TV/radio/on-line) a huge national contingent will be on hand.

We shall observe.

  1. Ad a newsperson who wants to remain anonymous, we are way over it. The Oakland people, in particular, are rude, disorganized, and many of them are ignorant of the rights of a free press. In two weeks, I have spoken with just one truly articulate occupier. The majority of them are transients and homeless misfits. That is the true reason society has left them behind. What we are really looking at, here, is a series of homeless camps that have moved from fiends and under bridges to more public places. Now they condone capitalism? Does this sound like a thnly veiled socialist revolution? Well of course. They have nothing to lose. Most of them have NOTHING INVESTED. And the politicians are enabling them for fear of...what? That the occupiers vote? It's a sham.

  6. Same first poster here. Am in the thick of it in Oakland. For a day, at least, there are reasonable people out in Oakland. The masses have joined the few. But it's a whole bunch of people railing against everything and anything, but nothing in particular. I like the guy with the sign advocating a maximum wage. Let's see...there goes motivation. Here comes economic stagnstion. Take away the American dream for the good of the masses. Here comes socialism. Where is John Gault?

  9. The majority of the occupiers are people who are out of touch with the way the real world works. If they have any desire to change their government they have to interact with it somehow and change from the inside.

BTW, Michael Moore is a hypocrite who uses these people's stage as a means to further his own agenda. He's the very person they hate yet they welcome him with open arms thinking that he's somehow aiding their cause. He's used them worse than Wall Street bankers...

Lastly, that the local TV news give this much pub to this group is a sad commentary on how local newsrooms are run.
