NBC Bay Area still lagging; LaRussa's beef with KNBR hosts; Steve Paulson, KTVU Weather guy underrated; Tuesday media notes

*Even with the addition of new anchor experiments, (Raj Mathai and Janelle Wang), KNTV, (NBC Bay Area), still is lagging in the local Bay Area TV news ratings. A large contingent of staffers are not that thrilled with a news director that continues to appear out of the loop and a constant tinkering of the newscasts over the past year has confused viewers.

Moreover, NBC's weak primetime schedule, (which in the past provided strong lead-ins is mired in third place). Short-term? Expect more of the same lethargy --long term? NBC and its O and O's and affiliates are banking on the 2012 Summer Olympics as a way to get the mojo back. We can hardly wait.

*Tony LaRussa used to do countless interviews with KNBR and its various tonsils, (most specifically, Radu and Ralph Barbieri) promoting his ARF, (Animal Rescue Foundation) charity. That is, until LaRussa, who just retired after his latest World Series win, had a falling-out with both hosts. The fiery LaRussa didn't appreciate Raddy's latest personal crappers and Barbieri's pompous 'tude. Guess who had the last laugh? LaRussa now plugs his ARF shows on mattress man, KGO's Ronn Owens.

*KTVU "Mornings on Two", weatherman, Steve Paulson, doesn't get a lot of attention, until now. Paulson is a nice and steady presence on the show and it's all about business, no innocuous chit-chat, just the info and is usually very reliable. He, Mark Tammayo, and Bill Martin are my favorites at Channel 2.

*Don't be surprised if KRON and Young look for a new home outside the city. The cost of even a minuscule new facility in SF is a fortune and even KRON, and Young, flush with a little cash, post BK, has limitations.

*There's word from a few industry wags that KPIX' Ken Bastida has a new contract, (his current deal expired on Monday). If that's the case, my bet is that the new deal does not equal the numbers, (about $300K annually), is nowhere close to the last one.

*Ladies in the biz, (and beyond), complained I didn't list any male SF TV anchor hotties. OK, ladies, go ahead and send in your favorites. I'll pub the best.

*It's not surprising that a certain high-profile local reporter is banging the wife of a certain news exec, its just that he's doing it with utter casualness. Be careful, young man. The other guy knows.

  1. Rich oh Rich you kill us by not naming names. My guess is that the banger is either Mike Mibach or John Susaki.....

  2. How far will Radnich go to twist facts for Krueger? Raddy went on a rant how good and not wrong it was a white hockey player wore blackface for Holloween. Krueger:I can't or can say if its offensive"!! lol!..the Producer then put egg on Raddy's face telling all that said Hockey player is a well known asshole and cheap shot player..
Kreugers past just kills that show when anything about morals and race comes up. And who insists on going there? Raddy.
And in other bizarre KNBR news..Raddy revealed that Monte Poole will not be allowed to be a guest anymore. He it appears will not agree to boycott 95.7. Oh,Radnich wouldn't say that..easy to figure.
Radnich defending a asshole in blackface. I heard everything now..

  3. Barbieri (still smarting from the '89 World Series) and others at KNBR were hoping to get LaRussa to talk about Mark McGwire's return to baseball and PEDs but LaRussa, hoping for a few softball questions before he promoted his event, didn't want any part of the McGwire subject. Much easier to go on Owens show so he doesn't have to talk baseball.
LaRussa, the Oakland A's, and Sandy Alderson were at the center of the steroid and HGH (still not tested for in baseball) baseball world.

  4. A "state of the art" TV studio means nothing. Everybody says that when describing a new radio or Television facility. Rarely does it mean better, just more automation, digital equipment, and servers to eliminate humans. What's that line from Sunset Boulevard? The business is small now.

  5. It's easy to dump on Gary and Ralph and say Tony gets the last laugh, fresh off his WS win but, as I recall, Gary was probing LaRussa about standing by Big Mac when believing McGwire didn't take steroids. It's that kind of "saving face" while being clearly wrong that leads to covering for bad behavior to, at its worst, wars started on a lie (Iraq II). F*cking Male Vanity!!

Rich, what makes you think it was the ladies that wanted to list male news hotties? Know thy territory!

"It's not surprising that a certain high-profile local reporter is banging the wife of a certain news exec..."

    HENRY TENENBAUM, NOOOOO!!

See, the beauty of this post, Rich, is you never name names to risk a lawsuit but by never naming names you never have to prove it and can really say anything. And then it just becomes a little inside wink between you and the industry.

  6. Tony is mad at Radnich because Gary asked him about Mark McGwire using PED's - always a pretty good interviewer, Radnich wouldn't let him off the hook when LaRussa said he didn't know - Tony got pissed and that was that...

  7. Worse than that, Raddy has reverted back to his Entertainment Tonight gossip.

Hey Radnich, what DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SPORTS?

  8. Henry Tenenbaum-lol. I wish I thought of it...

Speaking of LaRussa using winning to quiet all the cheating talk,I'm near to vomiting at the fawning over Harbaugh. It wouldn't bother me so much, except he was a real jerk when they thought he was going to be a loser...now ALL the local columnists fall over every Jim joke, his every bowel movement is a gold turd.
95.7 even said something about Jim making a local porn star hot. Will the groveling never end? No wonder he treats the local media like floor mats.
He's a very good coach..but when he's rude to people over and over who are trying to be nice to him..call him down on it.
Bay area sports media can be such saps.

  10. wowee,Rod Brooks actually married the chick he knocked up. I guess when you make a career of ripping and taunting the average guy who calls in that doesn't agree with your sports opinion,I guess people like me wont think the best of you.

  11. Most of it also started when Ralph used prison jargon to call Barry Lamar a "punk" preceding Barry's return to the Bay Area; Then Barry came on Ralphs show and asked him a 4 minute question; When Ralphs lips stopped moving Barry asked Ralph about the remark.....

Raddy always called Bonds a A-hole but then waffled and said he was the only player he would stop and watch him bat...

WHERE is Cass Centeno these days?
    Dennis Cruz?
    John London?
    Nanci Donnellan (The Sports Babe)

  13. @ 11:28AM....
I totally agree with you about Harbaugh. For over a decade our Local Sports Journalist have sat back, & not Uttered a word of contempt about the Losing ways of the 49er Ownership.

Then Finally the Yorks do one thing right, by hiring Harbaugh, and Jed York should be the MVP of the Season....YUCK, I'm NOT Buying or Drinking that BS Kool-Aid!!!

The 49er Management needs to Prove to me for the next 10 years that they are really interested in Winning...And Not just interested in the here, & now so they can get their proposed Stadium built.

  14. there were reports that NBC plans to put money into their O/O stations and increase news blocks and hire more "talent." I didn't see KNTV listed on the list of stations getting $$$. They talked about NBC Conn, NBC LA, and NBC NY...guess no love from Comcast/NBC for the Bay Area.

  15. I put Fitz and Brooks on for the first time in weeks-months. First thing I heard? Bob laughing and putting down an emailer. So,I changed the station back to 95.7.
Who's the audience that likes that? who are the endless new listeners because how could any regular enjoy those two? I cant beleive KNBR gets the ratings for those two they claim-it doesn't seem possible. That they are bought and paid for by the local teams,I can well beleive...but that's enough to keep their infomercial on midday year after year?

  16. Nay Area media fawning all over Harbaugh? That's nothing new, they did the same crap with Singletary.

  17. >> I cant beleive KNBR gets the ratings for those two they claim-it doesn't seem possible.<<

My sentiments also. I don't know anyone who listens to Fitz and Brooks. Radnich is awful. I guess if you can sell your advertisers the numbers that's all that matters..

  18. I once sent everyone I could find who was involved in the KTVU morning show an email complaining about their countless typos in their captions on that show. The only one who replied was Steve Paulson who said he always tries to doublecheck his captions for typos. No one else bothered. They were probably too busy gossiping about who knows or cares what.

  20. Nice to read the positives on Steve Paulson. Super smooth, gets the info out, exudes a good attitude, perfect for his slot. He and Bill Martin are a great morning/evening weather duo over there.
