Kudos to Damon Bruce on his KNBR 1050 devotion to the sordid Penn State/Joe Paterno scandal that has become front and center news. (Paterno has since been fired)
Bruce' show this week has delivered some of the best radio talk, (news and sports), I've heard in a long time. It was solid work; detailed, informative, concise and, for a change, well-spoken, articulate callers who seemed to gather the gravity of the situation.
Bruce is probably one of the few local broadcasters who actually read the entire Grand Jury report and made a point of calling out those pros who were simply relying on news attention. That makes for lazy and lousy shows. (Draw your own conclusion as to whom we're referring to).
More than merely voice the outrage that was indicative of his sports media peers, Bruce' passion for the story revealed a strong journalistic presence, almost unheard of in this part of the world.
I've been a vocal critic of Bruce, but on this front, he deserves high marks.
*Comcast SportsNet Bay Area has moved "Chronicle Live" from 5 PM to the later 7 PM time slot. I'm not so sure that a later start will help the show, but you can thank the move in part to the ongoing NBA lockout.
No Warriors games means creative thinking, but if I were the suits over there, I'd be experimenting with something far more profound. Take a chance--try a round table/Charlie Rose kind of thing, maybe an HBO "Real Sports" mojo, but is that asking for too much? Probably.
*Yeah, I took a couple of days off. Thanks to those who were alarmed. And even to those who wish I'd take a long walk on a short pier. It's so comforting.

Bill Romonowski on 95.7 was pure lout..he didnt want to hear about abused kids-"Joe is a great coach and since he didn't molest those kids he should be allowed to coach" said the stupidest man in local sports. Evidence? Bill didn't care, screwed up lives? so what? He's Joe Paterno!..right Bill? You fucking asshole,Romo. I hope Comcast and 95.7 fires you,you cheating idiot.
ReplyDeleteRomo and Bruno...Ted Griggs kind of guys I guess.
ReplyDeleteI listened to Damon and thought his week so far has been outstanding.
ReplyDeleteI appear to be one of the few who like DB. He really stepped up big time this week.
ReplyDeleteRomo: Concussions and HGH don't mix.
ReplyDeleteRomo is an idiot who should not be on the air. Besides the cheating, anyone who spits in the face of another player shows no respect. And now, to blow off the gravity of what was allowed to happen at Penn St. shows what a pee brain he is..
ReplyDeleteDamon is one of the more interesting on-air people in the local sports radio scene. I thought that when he first came on the air and bloviated (he sometimes still does), that he was just another loudmouth. But he loves what he does and is very creative and hard working.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Romo goes....he's passionate and sometimes a bit off center, but give the guy his due: he played in the NFL for 16 years and won four Superbowl rings (two with the Niners, two with Denver) and appeared in another Superbowl with the Raiders.
Yes, Romo is more than a bit on edge, but you have to be kind of crazy to begin with to play pro football. Most of these guys die before 60, and many more are crippled for life by all of the vicious hits they take. Romo still looks like he could play because he took care of himself and knew how to take the weekly collisions on the field with a minimum of damage to his body. As one player once said: "...every monday morning I wake up and feel as
though I've been in a care wreck!"
Romo showed no compassion for those boys-never said a word of sympathy, just disgust at the sex acts. I bet-that was Paterno's feelings too. Little queer boys who wouldnt fight back like real men. Why let them ruin his great coaching career? It's guys like Romo and Mike Ditka that show us insight how something like that can be hidden..
ReplyDeleteBill Romonowski is just stupid.
ReplyDeleteRomo is a world class a-hole. He always has been. He always will be.
ReplyDeleteHow Bill Romonowski got accepted to Notre Dame, let alone be the host of a radio show, is beyond me. I don't know what anyone sees in this guy or why anyone would want to hear him talk about anything.
ReplyDeleteOutside of Bruce bringing up 9/11 as a point to the chaos that ensued with the students rioting (he said he wasn't drawing a parrallel, but the example was a little too extreme IMO), he had a fantastic week. Him and (believe it or not) Rome got on this early in the week and had great opinions and guests. Why Romo gets on as much for TV or radio is beyond me. His voice sucks and his opinions are worse. I know I can turn off 95.7 at noon on Weds when they bring him on for an hour (his partner Stubblefield is OK).
