Sleeptrain is a fine mattress company, I'm sure, I don't pimp for them mind you, but since they've essentially bought out the entire Bay Area media landscape, I can imagine they're rolling in the bucks. Swell.
One of their biggest pimpettes, (along with KGO's Ronn Owens,) is KCBS' designated movie yenta, Jan Wahl. I'm not a big Wahl fan--she's fairly annoying and her latest antics don't help the cause.
What am I talking about? Wahl has been integrating Sleeptrain much into storied Hollywood film classics. Desecration is a better word. The ads have been running for weeks now and I finally had a boiling point the other day. I couldn't take it anymore.
Mind you, I'm not a big movie guy, but I've seen enough classic films. Wahl's Sleeptrain/movie act is a complete shlockfest and frankly, an embarrassment, mostly to KCBS too.
How do you feel?
what about the annoying kaiser spots? that whiny lady has been busting radios for years....glendale federal, california cows, and now kaiser. who is she and why does she get so much work?
ReplyDeleteI think Wahl has a place in the movie review scene here in the bay area. But I TOTALLY agree...it's one thing to endorse a sponsor, another to sully the integrity of her editorial content with shameless and irrelevant mentions of her sponsor.
ReplyDeletere: kaiser spots and whiny lady...I'm not quite sure which ads those are but if the whiny lady is a paid voice for ads, I think that's fair. The point of Rich's blog here, I think, is that mixing editorial with sponsor endorsement, is an unconscionable mixing of two distinct and separate jobs that one person (Wahl) holds.
ReplyDeleteThe lasy is Allison Janney, she used to play on tv's West Wing.
ReplyDeleteIdiot commercials? The Kars for Kids is still no.1,the Ammco commercial is another I dive for the mute button-and it runs all day too on TV and Radio. Besides,we who have delt with that company know every thing they find means "you need another clutch plate"..and they cant find the old one so you can see what "burnt out".
ReplyDeleteCommercials that still dont get old? The worlds most interesting guy and anything with claymation talking dogs and animals.
A few more later as they come to me..
Above and beyond all the annoying ads (I actually enjoy the Kaiser commercials) and by far the worst are the Steve Moskowitz ads. I’m so sick of that guy.
ReplyDeleteAllison Janney best known for the West Wing... I actually enjoy the Kaiser commercials. I dig the voice. Ha !!! Listening to the end of Tony and Radnich and as I type this she JUST came on. She can read me story all night if she wants.
ReplyDeleteLove Jan Wahl and do not mind her pimping out her clout to make some cash. Mr. Media, I am sure you would do it to if you were trying to keep your job. If some big company came to you and said we will give you this wad of cash to put our product in your blog posts, you would do it. The only thing you don't like is how many times the spot airs.
ReplyDeleteKate Scott today "Some fine woman on those soccer teams" Patrick Connor admonished to "keep it on the field" and Radnich got that sheepish look but did say "To each his own". Kate Scott works in a minefield. And for Connor who talks about porn and his favorite porn theaters and hooters....well,its more then a bit hypocritical isnt it?
ReplyDeleteI don't know how she does it hearing the hypocricy and homophobia on KNBR towards woman, and yet walking the line of self respect and keeping quiet.
Rich gets on her for adding nothing...but theres a reason she has little input-they wont let her.
Anything read by that slow reading, over accentuating Rod Brooks bothers the shit out me.
ReplyDeleteI personally love the most interesting man in the world. I also have a fondness for Tom Bodat from Motel 6, a real guy with a website.
ReplyDeleteThe instant I hear the strum of "1-800....Kars...," I rip out my headphones
ReplyDeleteand grit my teeth until I think it's safe to return.
Any animal ad is cool. Not so the most uninteresting guy (never big on most beer ads).
ReplyDeleteThe worst by a thousand miles is Metro PCS, radio & TV. Just abhorrent.
Who has more fat in their head- Gary R of KNiBR or Jan Wahl?
ReplyDeleteI know the Kars 4 Kids spot brings in the revenue, but at the same time can it hurt ratings even just a bit? Every time that spot comes on I change the station right away and don't seem to come back for hours or even at all if I've found better programming and got hooked on it. That thing has got to be at TSL killer.
ReplyDeleteJan Wahl spots are badly written and produced which makes them even worse than they are...Kars 4 Kids actually has a new rock jingle which is even worse than the original...KGO and KCBS are both playing it...The KNBR commercial for
ReplyDeleteSales Jobs at KNBR sounds like an example of how NOT to do a radio Commercial. The "Wanna Talk About It" guy on KGO Stinks too.
And why does Jan Wahl sound like see's doing a bad May West...Which I think is redundant.
Hey, those hats and plus size outfits are not going to pay for themselves!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, can't stand the Kars 4 Kids thing either. The kid sounds like a malcontent who's trying to ask for a hand out and sympathy now when an hour ago he was trying to jack the tires off your car.
The guy sounds like one of those 70s shlubs with the beanie cap and patches on the elbows of his tan corduroy jacket and it is anyone's guess as to which he has gone without the longest: a haircut, deodorant, or a job.
I'd crush Tom Shane if I met him.
ReplyDeleteThe Kars 4 Kids ad always brings a smile to my face, so I like the ad.
ReplyDeleteAs for Jan Wahl, I started tuning her out long before she started this product placement bit.
The Metro MCS commercials? Are the 21st century versions of Amos and Andy,Stepin Fetchit,Jose Jimenez. I think Asian Indian Americans arent offended like they should be. Why no anger at those bigoted commercials doesnt cause complaints is a wonder.
ReplyDeleteEvery time Jan Wahl does her lame Mae West impersonation I vommit in my mouth!
ReplyDeleteI never made the connection with Kaiser and Allison Janney, but it makes sense, both roles require a "bleeding heart".
ReplyDeleteIt's really pathetic but also it's a sign of the times that KNBR panders to the frathouse, pimple faced adolescent types, insulting everyone else who wants to listen to informative, interesting sportstalk radio. But then people like "P-Con," "Pauly Mac," "Murph," and the midday gigglers are only doing what they know best and what they are encouraged to do by dweebs like Hammer. Hammer is merely a rubber stamp of the corporate bean counters at Cumulus and does what he's told to keep his job. No wonder long time sports fans switch off their radios in frustration or turn to another station once the Giants or Niner games are done. KNBR's regular lineup has given plenty of listeners a good reason to shuck the radio and buy an I-Pod.
ReplyDeleteKars 4 Kids freaks me out, but I could listen to those Mal Sharpe ads all day.
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered about host reads, I can't believe every host owns gold, has a specific mattress or gets home improvements from a certain place.
How about that house painting commercial "Every five years! hahaha"
ReplyDeleteMost annoying is Owens badgering his guests to read those stupid Sleeptrain spots. It gets to the point you wish the guest would just tell him where to go. You can just imagine Salesperson Owens waiting for you at the door with his polyester shirt, gold chains & white shoes .....
Jan Wahl's "a ho" and a "Hipo-crit", she acts like a slut and hot stuff doing her Mae West flirting routine when reporting or interviewing (even though all she is, is a pig in a hat and dress) then turns around and marks a movie down when there is "too much r-rated content"........saint or devil, make up your mind, Ho!
ReplyDeleteGuess that's what makes the world go round: love the Kaiser commercials and her irreverent approach to it...Tom Shane, Moscowitz and Cars for Kids nauseate me however they mean a ton of business for these stations...a ton. Jan Wahl...don't understand why she keeps being hired.
ReplyDeleteI agree, we agree on this point. Sorry I wasn't clear...editorial shouldn't be sullied by – mixed with – sponsor endorsement. Agree, Wahl and others have two jobs that should not be mixed. However, I do think it's fair that in her ad role as a voice for Sleep Train, and as long as it's CLEARLY an ad, she's within her ethical boundaries to be that voice.
The Metro PCS guys are comedians, and they are funny, and they wouldn't be on if they weren't effective. They crack me up, especially the guitar, tongue out trip. And trapping the deuchy white guy who just signed a contract is funny too, and makes it's point. You need to lighten up, we know all Indians aren't like that.
ReplyDeletere: KCBS >> Give me Jan Wahl and her Sleeptrain movie schtick anyday over Cheryl Rains old Sleeptrain spots!! Talk about WHINY voice... Everytime her traffic reports come on I have to hit mute... and I thought radio was for people with great voices. Not her.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a problem with the radio. It's all the silly TV commercials that make the white guy in the ad as the butt of jokes. The white male is the moron every time. I won't buy products from these people.
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear that Kars for Kids, I can now recognize it on the first note and I immediately change channel. Even just the first note of that thing makes me crazy. I don't begrudge Jan Wahl making a living, I admire her for finding the work, but I change the channel anyway.
ReplyDeleteWell, frankly, I LIKE the Jan Wahl ads. It is a good tie-in - and from what I hear, it works. Let her be…..
ReplyDeleteDon't be so hard on Jan. I know a guy who keeps pimping his radio show endlessly on his blog. It's beyond obnoxious, but we put up with it. He could be just as forgiving.
