Sunday PM chatter; KTVU wins August; KGO's Pat Thurston; (Screw the Emmys)

**KTVU dominated August, which really isn't news around here anymore. They own 10 PM pretty much--get back to me when that changes.

Meanwhile, one of Channel 2's "star" anchorwomen isn't apparently as wanted as she thinks and according to one of my insiders, may be on the block. I'll talk more about that Monday.

**A breath of fresh air on the weekend AM radio overnight--KGO's thought-provoking and increasingly listenable Pat Thurston. Politics, culture, the Middle East debate; she has a nice touch and can mix and match--one helluva interviewer too.

**I hate the suddenly over-used such and such is "so yesterday", but excuse me, The Emmys are so yesterday. Who watches that crap? The same people who watch American Idol and Survivor; OK, so maybe a few other otherwise folks of moderate taste.

Fact of the matter is, save for two or three shows, network TV is over and done with; does garbage come to mind? and outside of Mad Men and a few cable shows, there is no reason to waste any time with the Emmys--hell, just give me HBO, Bill Maher, Stewart and Colbert and I'll be fine--don't need to see nor care about the insecure, higher-than-a-kite Hollywood wannabees.

See ya Monday.

  1. Regarding the Emmy's, I couldn't disagree with you more. Television quality manifests itself in cycles. Some dry spells last longer than others, but at this particular period of time, I believe that the quality of television entertainment both on cable and even on the network level...is at a significant high.

There's something for everyone and I agree that HBO tends to be the most prolific venue, but upstart cable networks like AMC and FX are taking risks and finding their audiences. There are strong female roles and intelligent comedies that speak to real life issues (Men of a Certain Age, Glee to name a few). Again, not everything will be your cup of tea. (Louie CK's new comedy is extremely offensive to some and groundbreaking and brilliant).

  2. Lol,funny you bring that up..last night was talling to a cous who said he and his wife were watching the Emmy's..and I happened to say I dont watch like before because of things like this: The Emmy awards for writing went to the Oscar awards AND the clip of that show was a clone of the Emmy's! same robotic banter,pauses,mannerism's...nothing on the fly or sincere blurts.
And as always, you can always count on few if any awards to Latins or Asians.

  3. Emmys? didn't watch em, haven't watched them for years. When I was a kid, we tuned in because network TV was "it," (three channels- remmeber?)and the Emmys were a chance to see the stars out of character and costume. Nowadays you can turn on the TV scandal shows or visit internet sites and see the stars buying coffee, etc. etc. ad nauseum. So, the Emmys don't generate any "buzz" for me.

  4. I'm curious if affiliates and studios are taking a hit financially because you just can't package and syndicate reality TV reruns like the comedies and dramas. They just don't have the staying power and these stations can't show reruns of Friends, Cheers, and Seinfeld forever.

I also find it curious that we have more digital stations to choose from, pay more for cable than ever before, and have less to watch than before. Springsteen was right!

And, for the record, I never watch the Emmys but still watch Survivor. Yes, I'm the one. My only guilty pleasure reality TV show.
