Monday media notes; tension at KTVU; Ronn Owens zinger; Mychal Urban media universe

**Nobody wants to go on the record, (for obvious reasons) but there appears to be a healthy amount of angst inside KTVU. Why is this such a big deal, you rightfully ask? There's tension in EVERY newsroom here and other places. Yes, but whereas the other local news outlets are bleeding left and right, Channel 2 continues to dominate and remains the highest-rated station in the Bay Area and makes millions for corporate owner, Cox Broadcasting.

The center of the storm, according to the peeps I spoke to is news director, Ed Chapuis. While all acknowledge he's aggressive and a thorough professional, they also believe he wants to "ward out the old-timers" and "get his own people" ingrained at the venerable Oakland Fox aff.

We'll keep a watch on this.

**Ronn Owens on KGO Monday morning noted the news of Taliban officials claiming responsibility for the Times Square would-be car bomb incident. Said Owens: "Why would you want to take responsibility for a terror attack that 'failed?"

**Speaking of the incident in NY, as a caller to Owens show noted later, has it occurred that the would-be bombing may not have been an Islamist terrorist, but perhaps a 'Timothy McVay-type domestic suspect?
Good point.

**Ex-MLB.com writer, Mychal Urban is appearing everywhere these days, on radio, (KNBR), cable, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, KNBR 1050.

Good for Urban, good for mankind, and good for the 'Unicorn hour' fan club.

  1. "Why would you want to take responsibility for a terror attack that 'failed?"

Because it still creates fear, failed or not, homegrown or Taliban, that they can strike and we are vulnerable.

So is this Taliban or al-Quaida that are claiming responsibility? Wasn't there talk about negotiating with the Taliban because, apparently, they aren't the same or radical as al-Quaida? I would think this would nix any ideas of that now.

Urban is all over the place and the guy is growing on me. Anyone else get a Judge Reinhold vibe from the guy? Maybe he can do a commercial for SportsNet where Jaime Sire or Mindi Bach come out of the swimming pool in a little red bikini and call him "Brad" while The Cars' "Moving in Stereo" plays in the background? Yeah, didn't think so. :)
